Manage Energy Usage with Paxton Access Control

Environmental awareness is a big topic in the United Arab Emirates – protecting the environment is considered the main objective of the UAE’s developmental policies. Using access control systems can support this. Access control systems can secure a building and protector people and assets. They can also be integrated with existing infrastructure to manage energy usage, reducing environmental impact and help make savings on energy bills. The international security technology manufacturer, Paxton, offers a simple-to-use access control system, Net2, which can be useful tool to control energy consumption. Net2 is a straightforward PC based access control solution that is ideal for managing building access and is perfect for settings like hotels, offices, schools, hospitals, shops and factories. Chris Hodge, Functional Architect at Paxton, said: “Security systems do not consume much energy during standard operation, and they can be used to control activities on site to limit energy use, using Triggers and Actions. “Using the standard events within the access control software, the systems can also be used to shut off power to equipment that is not in use. Therefore, they can help save energy to reduce environmental impact and save money on bills.” Triggers and Actions Enables Automated Events Net2 provides the Triggers and Actions feature, which are a series of rules that enable events within the system, help control users’ accessibility and manage integrated appliances. Steve Woodbridge, Paxton’s Global Training Manager, explains: “Facility managers can set ‘when the intruder alarm is armed’ as an event, so that when the system receives a signal that the event has happened, it will then trigger the action, which can be set as ‘switch off the lights’. “Occupancy Management in Net2 allows site managers to set occupancy level to zero. The feature works with Triggers and Actions, in which the rule can be set to turn off the lights when the occupancy level in a given area reaches zero.” Remote Site Management Save In-Person Visits The Paxton Connect app brings further convenience to the users. The app allows facility managers to remotely control their sites on smart devices from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. Steve said: “With Paxton Connect, building managers can monitor their sites instantly at the touch of a button. This can minimise the need to visit sites in person and save time and fuel by making system adjustments remotely. “These features make building management smarter and more efficient, helping to reduce energy wastage and save on bills.” Net2 Energy Saving Readers Paxton also manufactures Proximity Energy Saving Readers that can act like a power switch, to an individual appliance or all utilities in a given area. This can help save energy in a simple and automated way. Steve explains: “The readers are specially designed with a cover to retain a user’s card to turn the power on and off. The product can be installed in a way that power will only come when a valid user card is inserted. When a person leaves a room and takes out the card, the appliances such as lights and air conditioning will automatically turn off as it’s like switching off the main power. “The readers can also be connected to a single machine, perhaps those that consume a high-level of energy. This can ensure only the employees who are trained to use them, have access to start the machines, thus save energy when they are not in use.” Low Power Wireless Security If site managers are looking for an energy friendly, secure door handle, PaxLock Pro is the ideal solution. It is compatible with Net2 or work as a standalone security device. Chris Hodge said: “PaxLock Pro is a battery-run product and is efficiently designed to consume minimal energy to operate, for which the batteries generally last around two years. “PaxLock Pro will enter a sleep mode when not in use, requiring minimal energy. Built-in capacitive sensors wake the unit when operation is required, and a user’s token is presented. This minimises energy consumption, especially at night or over weekends when the handles are in less use.” To read more news and exclusive features see our latest issue here. Analytics

Video analytics in retail

Security Buyer takes a look at how video analytics can be applied in the retail environment to better security and marketing analytics   Video surveillance and its subsequent analytics has been a staple part of the retail security solution for a long time because of its ability to monitor all aspects of the retail environment from behind the scenes in the stock room and warehouse, to front of house.   We all know and appreciate the benefits of video surveillance and CCTV cameras in retail, but the use of video analytics is an emerging trend and technology, which, although has been available for some years, is only now becoming a fundamental part of securing stock, people and assets in a busy environment.   Retail security systems face a number of unique challenges to protect businesses from theft and loss prevention. Retail video analytics can help solve these problems and provide additional benefits, as well. Commercial video analytics is quickly becoming a necessary part of retail business, both for security and business analytics. Modern security cameras can identify people, objects and patterns in real-time, giving your business a powerful edge in the age of the Internet of Things.  Retail camera analytics can be done in real-time as well as on recorded footage. The software can be run on-board the cameras or on a central server, making video analytics for retail stores a versatile solution that will work for nearly any retail business, no matter the size.  Theft and loss prevention  One of the greatest difficulties in securing retail spaces is the prevention of theft and the apprehension of thieves when it does happen. Installing security cameras for retail stores has historically been a reactive solution – they’re used to identify the criminals after the fact – with one small exception. Retail video surveillance cameras can be installed in two ways: high- or low-visibility. Obvious security cameras help deter shoplifters and troublemakers – thieves think twice when they know they’re being watched. Unobtrusive cameras, on the other hand, don’t prevent theft – but they’re not as easily damaged, either.  Retail camera analytics reduce loss and shrinkage by taking a proactive approach to security rather than a reactive one. They do this by identifying four things in their feeds:  Recognising objects like people or vehicles in a particular area  Identifying objects lingering in areas  Detecting objects crossing a virtual line  Counting objects entering or leaving an area  The object-counting functions in retail camera analytics can detect drastic changes on shelves in real-time, giving you the opportunity to stop thieves as soon as they try to leave. High-quality surveillance cameras – 3MP or better – can pick out facial features well enough to identify criminals if they do manage to slip away. Advanced appearance search functions provided by Avigilon will actively track an individual through recorded footage and identify them if they show up again, giving you the opportunity to alert the authorities and apprehend them on the spot.  There are several different core functions for video analytics such as:  Pre-emptive Security Alerts  Video analytics enables preventive measures by detecting the events that prove to be a precursor to any security incidents. These primarily include crowd behavior analysis as well as prediction of certain situations that may lead to security incidences such as spillage detection, unattended object left behind etc.  Post-Event Alerts  Some video analytics algorithms help raise the alarm on detection of some safety-related incidences such as fall detection, people scattering, shelf sweep or sweet-hearting etc.  Following are some common use cases which constitute most of the security incidences and go a long way in minimising the security issues for retail chains:  Loitering: This is one of the predictive threat detection algorithms, which takes into account tracking ID of the person and the time spent in the specific ‘Region of Interest (RoI)’ without any meaningful activity. When a person spends more than the required time at a specific location of a store it is likely to follow some or the other malpractices. This can be prevented using video analytics… To read the full exclusive see our latest issue here. Casinos

Hotels & Casinos: A winning hand

Security Buyer takes a look at how video surveillance and access control can be utilised in the hotel and casino space to reduce crime and improve employee safety  For hotels, casinos and gaming facilities, there are a number of moving parts when it comes to security – from managing multiple points of entry and deterring theft, to reducing fraud and complying with regulations. Navigating the challenges brought on by a global pandemic has only heightened these security responsibilities further. However, by harnessing the power of contactless technologies, video surveillance and access control, hotels and casinos can continue to provide high levels of security, while protecting the health and safety of their guests. Biometrics in casinos  Like many industries, the Covid-19 pandemic continues to have a profound impact on the global casino industry, despite doors having been reopened to the public. Many people are still vulnerable or anxious when it comes to the coronavirus, and therefore want to be reassured by hotel, event and leisure facilities that their cleanliness is up to code. This even extends to the security systems that in-house staff use to minimise contagion and improve security.   Casinos on the other hand, face a unique set of challenges to protect the safety of their customers and staff, with factors such as the exchanging of money, use of slot machines and passing of chips all making it difficult to operate as a contactless environment. “By making the switch to contactless access control systems, casinos can minimise the risk of spreading contagious diseases among their staff and guests,” explains Gallagher’s Regional Manager for South East Asia, David Thean.   It is not just the elimination of the potential spread of Covid-19 that provides biometric access control as a secure integration into any casino’s security system, but also the nature of biometrics. Casinos are known for the hustle and bustle of people, the constant 24-hour life that emanates from within. So, with the vast number of people inside a building at one time, casino owners must always be hot on their toes when it comes to access control for employees to ensure that no intruders can access valuable points, such as the cash registers/vaults etc within the premise. Biometrics offers a unique identification as opposed to keycards, fobs or keys that are prone to becoming lost, stolen or broken. Implementing biometrics with facial, iris or thumb recognition, casinos can protect assets and people from theft.  Video surveillance in casinos  Some of the best security solutions to integrate and couple with your biometric or access control systems, are video surveillance. The gaming industry faces significant challenges in security and fraud reduction: safeguarding guests and employees, protecting critical assets, and striving to gather intelligence to prevent major breaches and fraud. Stringent regulations must also be followed to maintain the integrity of operations and comply with governing bodies.  Casino surveillance departments use video surveillance to gather data and address threats in real-time. It is a critical tool that allows operators to investigate events quickly, while mitigating future risk.  Modern video surveillance systems have complete situational awareness, operational effectiveness and improves emergency responsiveness in casinos. Systems allow operators to detect and respond quickly to undesirable behaviour while capturing details even in extreme lighting conditions – allowing for 24/7/365 recording and full… To read the full exclusive see our latest issue here. Jacksons

Implementing robust perimeter security

Jacksons Fencing was specified to install physical security solutions at a Data Centre in the West Midlands. Every year, more data storage is required to meet the demands of Britain’s expanding population. With this, security is essential to comply with privacy regulations, avoid information loss, and safeguard against terrorism and espionage. As the need for a West Midlands data centre increased, a robust perimeter security solution was essential, particularly following the development of leisure facilities adjacent to the site. Fencing, gates, access control, and automation were installed to create a strong perimeter system. Preparation is key The data centre is situated on a large, multi-occupancy green field site, as such a number of trees and shrubs had to be removed and the grounds made level to prepare for the works. In keeping with Jacksons Fencing’s environmental credentials, new saplings were planted to replace those that had been removed. Correct preparation is key to ensure that installations can be implemented safely while also making sure no utilities are disrupted when digging. In this case, a full underground radar survey was conducted to prevent potential incidents and a new mains power line was connected to the locations requiring a supply as a result of the installation. Fence and access control installation When the foundation work was finished, installation of the fencing and gates commenced. In order to secure the perimeter and create a safe and long-lasting boundary, 296m of 2.5m high Barbican Defender® Xtreme fencing was installed. This features a vertical bar fence design and cranked pales, providing a strong anti-climb solution without the need for additional barbed tape or spikes. The sheer height of the fencing solution also reduces the temptation of unauthorised trespassing. A break-in could result in a threat to public safety, therefore tamper-proof fixings and concealed anti-vandal panel to post connectors were a vital addition to the project, to prevent any attempts to get through the fence. These design features create a strong and secure fence whilst still providing a smart aesthetic, creating a welcoming entry point for clients and staff. Manufactured from tubular steel which is hot dip galvanised, the fencing is strong and light therefore, making installation and transportation easier. Safe and secure gates To provide efficient and safe access and traffic control, several gates were installed, including a 6m wide automated Double Leaf Bi-Fold Speed Gate with traffic lights. Additionally, two dual-height access control posts were fitted; the integrated entry and exit systems use video intercoms and card reader systems at both car and lorry heights. Four manually operated 1.2m wide single-leaf gates were installed; two with keyed entry and emergency push pads on the secure side of the gate for emergencies, and the other two featuring self-closers and magnetic locks with shrouded exit push buttons and an entry card reader system. A safe pedestrian entrance was installed via a 180° full height turnstile, which features a two-way audio intercom and keypad for entry, and a shrouded push-button for exit. These fencing, gating, and turnstiles solutions all benefit from a 25-year guarantee and polyester powder-coating in green presents a welcome appearance for visitors and employees; ensuring it blends in with the surrounding area and stays looking good for years to come. It also limits the risk of repairs and replacements due to enhanced protection against rust, which is more common with low-quality, ill-prepared fencing. Opting for a cost-effective, long-life product with a high-security rating, ensures that the site’s boundary is well protected, not only from potential trespassers but also from vandals intending to cause damage. Peter Jackson, Jacksons Fencing Managing Director, comments: “We are very pleased to have been involved in this project and provided this data centre with a secure perimeter, to keep the facility safe. The fact that these types of sites are becoming increasingly targeted by vandals or trespassers is unacceptable, but I am delighted that we’ve been able to help address the issue by installing robust fencing and security solutions to protect the site and people in the West Midlands.” He continues: “We hope that with the security perimeter solutions we’ve implemented, the service can continue to function without any disruption. We are incredibly confident in our products, and we hope that the Barbican Defender® Xtreme fencing and various gates can give the facility-owners peace of mind that their perimeter security will stand the test of time.” To read the full exclusive see our latest issue here.
