Wrightstyle and an aluminium anniversary

Wrightstyle is one of Europe’s leading suppliers of advanced steel and aluminium glazing systems, supplying fire and blast resistant systems worldwide. Tim Kempster, Wrightstyle’s MD takes a look at bomb blast safety – and Wrightstyle’s proven system. If it was a wedding anniversary, a traditional gift – somewhat unromantic – is aluminium, which makes some sense because we supply glazing systems in both aluminium and steel. However, for us at Wrightstyle, it’s an important anniversary because it was ten years ago that we first introduced a market-leading glazing system that could withstand the pressure impact of a lorry bomb. It was ground-breaking at the time, because there were more than a few doubters who said that a glazing system couldn’t resist such an immense blast pressure. But we developed our structurally-glazed system, and independently tested it against the equivalent of 500 kilos of TNT, acknowledged to be the explosive impact of a lorry bomb, and roughly ten times the size of a car bomb. Known in the industry for developing glazing solutions for challenging specifications, Wrightstyle was initially approached with a set of criteria for the Central Security and Co-ordination Command Centre for the Asian Games hosted in Doha, Qatar in December 2006. Initially designed to protect and prevent any disruption to the critical operations of the Games’ co-ordination, the USD $31million building also had to be designed with the intention to hand it over to the Qatar military on completion of the Asian Games. The strict criteria from the project architects and consultants required the majority of the external glazing to mitigate the effects of a medium size lorry bomb and a close range car bomb. Other requirements were for the glazing to have solar control, be thermally performing, but to have an external sight line of less than 20mm and internal sightline of less than 60mm to maximise vision to the building exterior – project requirements for which there was no tested system available on the market. Our solution was achieved through a high-specification structural glazing technique that bonds the glass to the framing support system so that, in an explosion, the components work together to safely absorb the thermal shock of the explosion. The successful tests were carried out independently by Advantica Limited at a specialist site within RAF Spadeadam, Northumberland.  The simulated lorry bomb attack was immediately followed by a simulated car bomb attack (100 kilos of TNT). The lorry bomb was detonated 75 metres from the test rig and the car bomb was detonated at a distance of 20 metres, producing a higher loading on the façade. The Wrightstyle system set a new benchmark for a glazing system to mitigate against blast attack and, with terrorism much in the news, has now been supplied to a number of projects in the United States, UK, and the MENA and Asia-Pacific regions. It is a worldwide success, protecting high-risk buildings and those adjacent to them.  We’ve also been pushing the boundaries – for example, to make our advanced system look no different from non-protected glazing systems. Such an achievement deserves more than a lump of aluminium but, being also being a supplier of aluminium glazing systems, we could make good use of it. Social Media – the latest challenge to Aviation Security addressed by Transport Security Expo 2015

Transport Security Expo to address the full range of Aviation Security issues 2-3 December 2015 / Olympia London Aviation is one of the highest priorities on the security agenda with airports and airlines a key target for terrorists. But the tactics adopted by those with malicious intent are constantly changing. As Francis Morgan, Director of Policy, Heathrow Airport, has said: “Devising security strategies for aviation businesses becomes ever more complex. Every business involved in this industry needs to consider the numerous threats in the round and develop a strategy that covers not only their aviation activities, but their systems, their commercial information, their intellectual property and their people.” One of the new developments changing the landscape, for example, is the use of social media. In the words of Andy Blackwell, Head of Corporate Security, Virgin Atlantic: “Within aviation, it’s not just the genuine threats to people and planes that you have to worry about but all the hoaxes, many of which are designed to cause economic damage. Social media, because of the speed of communication, has changed how we receive threats and in many respects how we manage them. These are new areas and you have to develop ways to differentiate between the hoax and the real thing.” Through its exhibition, conferences and security innovation seminars, Transport Security Expo will be covering the full range of aviation security issues – from the very latest technological developments to the application of human skills such as Behavioural Detection, from the coordination of international regulatory standards to biohazards to the screening of passengers and cargo. Aviation is Transport Security Expo’s longest-established sector, attracting the world’s leading airports and airlines as well as freight and cargo handlers. In 2014 over £8.6m of procurement was brought to the Expo from the following visitors alone: Research and Development Manager, Heathrow Airport; Operational Manager Airport Security, Rotterdam The Hague Airport; Director of Safety and Security, British Airways; Emirates Group Security Divisional Vice President; UK Border Force National Scanner Manager; and CityJet’s Head of Security. Supporting the exhibition will be the conference programme, designed in close collaboration with an expert Advisory Board to maximise engagement between Government, Industry and Academia. Open to everyone to attend, free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis, the sessions will feature some of the most renowned opinion leaders in the industry. Peter Jones, CEO, Nineteen Events, organisers of Transport Security Expo, commented: “For anyone involved in aviation security, Transport Security Expo 2015 will be a must-attend event. Exhibitors are already signing up and, by booking early, enjoying the opportunity to work with us to ensure they get the maximum benefit from the show.” In addition to Aviation Security, other sectors at Transport Security Expo will include Maritime Security, Rail Security, Major Events Transport Security, Secure Transportation and Border Security. Six most common merchant pitfalls revealed in new chargebacks playbook

Global Risk Technologies, a leading technology company specialising in chargeback compliance, released a new Chargeback Playbook that details the top six most common pitfalls that merchants need to look out for in relation to chargebacks. UK online spending is expected to grow by 14% to reach £156.67bn in 2015 and chargebacks are threatening merchants like never before, costing over €10bn (£7.5bn) in industry losses, compared to around €2bn (£1.4bn) lost through ID fraud, according to Visa. All merchants will at some point deal with chargebacks. As well as losing the money when a disputed card payment is charged back to them by their bank, they lose the cost of the goods or service they provided. Monica Eaton-Cardone, CIO and co-founder of Global Risk Technologies said: “Friendly fraud chargebacks are the hidden problem of the retail world. We have released this playbook to provide an easy-to-follow guide for merchants that will help to reduce their chargeback losses. The worry for many of them is that they often do not know about the problem until they get hit with a chargeback. By working out a plan of action in advance, merchants can reduce the risk of chargebacks happening in the first place. But when they do occur, decisive steps are key.”  The six most common merchant pitfalls identified by Global Risk Technologies are:  1. Poor customer service Only 14% of customers contact the seller before they instruct their bank to reclaim their money.  2. Out-of-office hours If customers cannot contact the merchant at any time, they may well contact their bank instead and instigate a chargeback.  3. System and process fails Chargebacks can happen when technology systems and payment processes fail.  4. Fraudulent transactions When payment cards or card details are stolen, the criminal transactions are charged back and the merchant becomes responsible for the cost.  5. Poor logistics If the consumer does not receive the product they ordered, the merchant loses the item they’ve sent out as well as the refund and chargeback cost.  6. Friendly fraud Consumers buy and receive a product but still initiate a chargeback, which is fraudulent, and the merchant fails to identify the fraud and challenge the chargeback. To find out more about managing these common pitfalls and controlling the chargeback risk, visit http://bit.ly/grt-cp to download the full, free playbook guide. Global Risk Technologies provides a comprehensive and highly scalable merchant-centric solution for chargeback processing, risk mitigation, fraud management and education that is unrivalled anywhere else in Europe. A personal best for Securitas as officers scoop national BSIA honours

Securitas has scooped another personal best at the 2015 British Security Industry Association (BSIA) Awards. The national awards pay tribute to the outstanding work of security officers over the past 12 months and Securitas was honoured with a record six accolades including two out of three honours in the ‘Outstanding Act’ category. The first ‘Outstanding Act’ award went to Tim Prodger from Somerset for his vigilance and integrity throughout an ‘intense incident’ which happened during his shift at a major London supermarket. Tim took action when he overheard a man in the store’s toilets attempting to take his own life. After breaking down the toilet cubicle door, Tim administered first aid to the man, who had already lost a great deal of blood.  Tim stayed with him until paramedics arrived and a store spokesperson said that, without him, the man would have undoubtedly died. ‘Outstanding Act’ number two was handed to Chris Fielding from Chesterfield. A Chesterfield Royal Hospital security supervisor of four years, Chris received the award as a result of his initiative and professionalism throughout a potentially dangerous and challenging incident. While on duty, Chris and a colleague were called to one of the wards where there were reports of a volatile and aggressive man. Shortly after arriving on the ward, the man managed to escape restraint, running away on several occasions and attempting to take his own life. Chris repeatedly prevented this from happening, firstly reasoning with the man and then physically stepping in. The man switched between pleading and aggression each time and, at one point, threatened the lives of the security officers. On his last attempt, the man locked himself in a room and, unable to gain access, Chris used his torch to strike the glass repeatedly in order to be able to get his hand through it and unlock the door from the inside. Once inside, he immediately restrained the man who was then escorted by three security officers and two police constables to a holding ward. In the same category, officer Adam Murphy was given a special commendation for his bravery in the early morning hours of September 2014. While driving to work, Adam witnessed a violent crime happening in the street involving a deadly weapon. He instinctively drove his van between the two brawlers in order to separate them. After several exchanges of the weapon and its subsequent discarding, Adam and a member of the public exited their vehicles to assist the wounded man. The attacker escaped, however Adam gave chase managing to restrain the offender shortly afterwards. An award for ‘Best Newcomer’ went to Barrow in Furness security officer and emergency medical technician, Paul Wilson, who joined the security team at BAE Systems in August 2013, bringing his past experience as an emergency medical technician with him. The introduction of Securitas personnel into BAE’s existing in-house customer team was a new concept but Paul’s personal skills soon proved extremely important in not only dealing with employees in sensitive medical situations, but also to ensure his integration and relationship building with the customer. In May 2014 Paul’s professionalism and attention to detail won him a Securitas Community Award for Vigilance after he identified a concern with a patient during a routine medical examination.  During the patient’s subsequent recovery, his surgeon informed him he was lucky he had been diagnosed quickly with Paul’s efforts, as a delay may have resulted in a major stroke. Bristol’s Sainsbury’s Emerald Park Team received a ‘Best Team’ award for greatly reducing damages in and around the site and receiving outstanding KPI results. The team manages the flow of traffic throughout significant gas tank installation projects, assisting in securing the site and making sure staff and visitors have the correct access cards and authorisation.   The team also supports the Emerald Park charity, Frenchay After Burns Club. Their dedication and enthusiasm saw five of the security team volunteer to participate in a charity walk, completing the Brecon Beacons peaks in one day.  The team of five walked nine miles, climbed a total of 2,907 feet in six hours and raised £1,000 for the charity, which supports young burns victims and their families. Finally, the coveted ‘BSIA Chairman’s Award for Contribution to the Community’ went to the company’s ‘Tour of Securitas’ – a charity initiative which raised over £3,000 for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). The virtual Tour began in Edinburgh on 8 September 2014 and involved over 800 officers and support staff across 21 branches, cycling on static bikes to help raise awareness of safety in the workplace and raise vital funds for the charity. Finishing in Uxbridge five days later, the Tour clocked up a total of 2,677 miles. The awards were announced at the BSIA’s Annual Luncheon which took place at the London Hilton Park Lane on Wednesday 15 July. The haul was, yet again, a personal best for Securitas staff, who, earlier this year, scooped a record-breaking 14 awards at the regional stages. Brian Riis Nielsen, Securitas Country President, said: “Our officers prove time after time that they are prepared to go above and beyond in their line of duty and we’re very proud, once again of their achievements and recognition.”
