Into the Cloud: Don Boxley

Into the Cloud: Don Boxley, CEO and Co-Founder of DH2i What does ‘security’ mean to you? For me, security means helping our customers to build secure connections between any two endpoints without fear that someone is using their systems that shouldn’t be.  What made you want to work in the industry? Working in the security industry was an outgrowth of our customers being challenged to build secure connections between their on-premises systems and the public cloud.  They wanted to be able to move workloads back and forth between on-prem and cloud environments. But because they didn’t control the entire security perimeter, they struggled to do this in a secure repeatable way.  If you could change anything in the industry, what would it be? I would continue to push the industry to collaborate at all levels to defeat the scourge of cyber-attacks. Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently? I don’t know about funny, but it was certainly stupid. I was recently sitting in my car in the garage, and I was going to run an errand. I got distracted, and I pressed the button in my car which activates the garage door to close and then I preceded to back out and ripped off the top off my bike rack…Pretty dumb. What’s the most important trend you see today? I see a nasty trend of nation states engaging third-party “cybersecurity” firms to engage in more blatant cyberattacks. Frankly if that trend continues, I don’t think that’s going to end well for any of us. If you didn’t work in security, what would you be doing? Teaching.  What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV? I coached a lot of youth soccer. I had the opportunity to coach both my boys and won a state championship with them.  So yeah, that’s probably the most interesting thing that you wouldn’t see on my CV.  What is one thing you would make compulsory in the office and one thing you would ban? I would make video games, probably Mario Kart, compulsory – you know anything that would just break it up. It would help the team to have fun and enjoy being together.  I would ban poor work life balance.  Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I lost my mom and brother last year, so I’m just kind-of taking it one day at a time right now.   To stay up to date on the latest, trends, innovations, people news and company updates within the global security market please register to receive our newsletter here. Protecting the reputation of the video surveillance industry

Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe, explains why he passionately believes that the password protection elements of the Secure by Default standard should be a fundamental requirement for all video surveillance systems. They may occur for criminal or malicious purposes, or just seen as a challenge by opportunistic hackers. Whatever the reason, cyber-attacks are a major issue which could have a significant impact on the reputation of the video surveillance industry. This is why recent publicity about a high-profile security video solutions provider, allegedly taking a casual attitude in terms of restricting who can gain access to end-users’ confidential information, should serve as a reminder for stakeholders in the video surveillance supply chain to work together to promote best practice. Secure by Default Whilst the majority of cameras are not installed for mission critical or high security purposes, there are countless businesses and organisations which are entrusting video surveillance systems to help them protect their assets, people and property. In doing so, they should be able to expect that their confidential data is being kept safe from hackers, which is the main reason why the Secure by Default standard was introduced in 2019 by the UK’s Surveillance Camera Commissioner. Hanwha Techwin was proud to be among the manufacturers who were invited to participate in the development of the Secure by Default standard, which has the objective of ensuring security surveillance products are cyber and network secure by default, out of the box. As such, the standard sets out what those of us involved in the video security industry can do to respect customer privacy rights, as well as comply with data protection regulations, such as GDPR. In the simplest of terms, the standard guides manufacturers to adopt an approach which makes cyber-attack protection a fundamental feature of a video surveillance solution that is taken into account at the start of a camera design process and not just treated as one of a long list of useful features. 5 essential elements of password protection Obvious perhaps, but having sound password protection protocols is a good starting point for establishing cyber security best practice. Whilst these need to be easy to implement, having minimum mandatory and auto-enforced standards, such as prohibiting the consecutive use of the same letter or number and encouraging the use of special characters, as well as a combination of letters and numbers, should always be designed into a device’s firmware. It is also important manufacturers do not supply products with pre-configured weak passwords where the user is not required to make changes. These are typically passwords which all have the same letters or numbers. In particular, the Secure by Default standard stipulates the following measures: Whilst no manufacturer can offer 100% guarantees, we would urge consultants, system designers and system integrators to only work with manufacturers who support the objectives of the Secure by Default standard and can demonstrate they fully understand the importance of keeping end-user clients’ data safe by doing their utmost to counter the risk of a cyber-attack. This will include those who have removed a ‘back door’ which might have originally been created to give engineers easy access to a device, but also provides an opportunity for hackers. Look out for manufacturers who recognise the importance of being open and honest with customers when new cyber security threats are identified and are able to move quickly to update firmware to combat them. At Hanwha Techwin, for example, our Security Computer Engineering Response Team (S-CERT) is totally focused on addressing any potential security vulnerabilities in our Wisenet products and solutions. Members of the team have been hand-picked for their expertise in being able to identify, analyse and quickly respond with effective countermeasures to any cyber security threats. Manufacturers should also be using third-party testing agencies to evaluate their products against the latest methods of hacking, as well as offering training to installers and systems integrators which covers the importance of setting up password protection as an essential part of the commissioning process for cameras and recording devices. Summary The ability for countless businesses and organisations, as well as homeowners, to view live or recorded video from any PC on the network or from a smartphone or tablet, has revolutionised how property or assets are remotely monitored.  It has, however, also resulted in data protection becoming a significant issue for the video surveillance sector. The good news for end-users and all involved in the supply chain is that there is no shortage of professional and socially responsible manufacturers whose products meet the Secure by Default standard by being designed with data protection in mind.   To stay up to date on the latest, trends, innovations, people news and company updates within the global security market please register to receive our newsletter here. Product Spotlight: Unifying access control software

Developed by Prysm Software AppControl is an open and scalable access control management software able to manage multiple and diverse systems in one interface Access control is an essential asset in a global security installation. However, we may legitimately raise the following questions. What is happening when multiple proprietary access control systems are deployed in one installation? How to manage this in a simple way? How can operator’s tasks be facilitated when it comes to managing complex access profiles? What about avoiding one time replacement of existing systems and enabling step by step investments over multiple years? How can I easily create interactions with other technologies? How can I overcome existing software limitations on the number of doors and users? Our access control software AppControl is THE solution to help end-users to overcome all these issues. Indeed, AppControl is a multi-system, multi-site, multi-user access control software that enables heterogeneous access control equipment from different manufacturers to be federated and controlled from a single interface. It is very simple to create interactions and interoperability between the access control systems supervised by AppControl and other technologies integrated in AppVision: video, intrusion, fire, intercoms and building management systems. AppControl integrates all the standard features of an access control software. Users have access to a complete management of rights including profile and timetable management. It provides visitor management features, events and alarm management and has the capacity to edit history and reports. AppControl™ also manages anti-passback and blacklist management, counting and tracking features. Of course, it gives the possibility to create, customise and print badges. However, some specific assets make AppControl stand out in the access control market. Given that it is an entirely software-based solution, AppControl is independent from hardware manufacturers. Furthermore, it has no limitation in terms of users, profiles, and timetables. Additional drivers and features can be developed autonomously by partners using our SDK. Its interface is 100% customisable. AppControl is so customisable that any partner can develop and market its own OEM version at no extra cost. Already implemented in more than a thousand projects, AppControl is efficient in all vertical markets. We have a lot of case studies in institutional buildings to manage multi-brand installations, in logistics to manage trucks queuing, in smart cities to manage restricted access to city centres for buses, in laboratories to dynamically manage employee access according to the viruses they have worked with. AppControl can also easily manage parking and gates as well as plate recognition. Thanks to its intuitive configuration tool, AppControl deployment and configuration can be performed by a very large number of people, not only by a circle of insiders. And most importantly, in total independence from Prysm Software. For all these reasons, AppControl is a real game changer in the access control business. Whatever the size or complexity of the project, whatever the vertical market you are addressing, AppControl enhances your access control system and generates a high level of return on investment.   To stay up to date on the latest, trends, innovations, people news and company updates within the global security market please register to receive our newsletter here. Heald Ltd and Swedish security company Intergate sign distributor agreement

Heald, a world-class innovator in the field of perimeter security technology and the largest manufacturer of quality security equipment in the UK, has announced a partnership with Sweden-based Intergate following a recent install of their Matador products in Stockholm. Intergate is the leading distributor in Sweden for access control solutions. The firm, which celebrated its 25th-anniversary last year, is a subsidiary of Indutrade, that has a turnover of £1.6 billion and 7,000 employees. Following the distributor agreement, the City of Stockholm ordered a number of Heald products through the new distribution partnership with Intergate, including the Matador, the first installation project of Heald products in the City. The purpose of the installation was to stop unauthorised vehicles from accessing a shopping centre area in the suburb Skärholmen, but still allow access to delivery and emergency response vehicles. The challenge facing the installation was the need for an effective but accessible solution that addressed the need for an ultra shallow excavation due to a parking garage located underneath. The Matador bollard was chosen due to its unique design and its ability to be installed on the surface or with very minimal excavation, therefore not interfering with underground infrastructure. The project included the fitting of six electromechanical sliding bollards and 26 fixed bollards. All of them shallow mounted. The Matador is the world’s only sliding bollard which was developed specifically to address issues around underground infrastructure while still providing access for permitted vehicles. Available in a range of operations, the patent-protected product is available as both shallow mount and surface mount and can be used as either a permanent or temporary security solution. CEO of Intergate Fredrik Vedin said: “The support from Heald has been outstanding through the whole installation process. Since this was our first time with this kind of product (sliding bollards), we needed extra attention and support from the technicians, sales support agents and engineers of Heald and we received everything we needed from them. “We feel very confident with Heald as our supplier and we look forward to our next project together.” With innovation at the core of Heald, they continue to bring to market unique, patent-protected products from bollards to road blockers. Heald’s bespoke designs are made to fit individual site requirements and meet the increasingly demanding needs of organisations that require high-security solutions against the threat of vehicular attack, in particular locations which require shallow or surface mount solutions. Debbie Heald MBE, managing director at Heald Ltd, commented: “We chose Intergate as our Swedish distribution partners as they are leaders in their field with bollard installations, so the partnership seemed the perfect fit for our unique products. “Intergate have the same attention to detail, care for the customer and share the same values regarding providing and installing only the best in high-security products and services. There simply was no other choice for Heald in this region.” The partnership with Intergate follows on from recent announcements in that Heald has partnered with Germany-based truckBlok and Singapore-based ESCO Pte Ltd to bring Heald products to the major cities around the world.   To stay up to date on the latest, trends, innovations, people news and company updates within the global security market please register to receive our newsletter here.
