SafeMart, one of the country’s leading providers of home security and alarm monitoring solutions, has released its list of 2011’s Most Dangerous Cities in America. In conjunction with SafeMart’s List, SafeMart is launching its Neighborhood Steps To Safety™ Contest.

SafeMart’s List focuses on property crimes — burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft. The five MSAs that SafeMart focused on for the List have rates above the national averages in those categories.

“As a home security company that provides customized solutions, it is important to understand news and trends that are driving consumer behavior. If one area of the country is displaying alarming crime trends, it’s important for us to understand that so that we can help our customers protect their homes more effectively,” says Chris Johnson, CEO of SafeMart.

The country as a whole has a property crime rate of 2,942, but Fayetteville, North Carolina; San Antonio, Texas; Macon, Georgia; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Columbus, GA recorded property crime rates above 5,000 per 100,000 according to 2010 data from the FBI.

SafeMart’s Neighborhood Steps To Safety™ Contest asks customers and non-customers to submit a list of the best practices that their neighborhood uses to keep families safe. Installing home security systems, displaying yard signs, communicating travel schedules with neighbors and local authorities are all recommended by SafeMart.

“In addition to releasing our List, we want to give our customers, their neighbors and even customers of our competitors the opportunity to collaborate around best practices that we provide and best practices that customers are using every day,” says Johnson.
