Increasing aviation security in Viracopos

Equipment donated by the United States aims to increase aviation security and mitigate risk in one of Brazil’s busiest airports, Viracopos. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), a branch of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in partnership with the Viracopos International Airport (VCP –  Brazil), launched today the operation of new security equipment at the international checkpoint during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Viracopos. The international and transfer checkpoints at Viracopos now operate with state-of-the-art equipment, raising the screening standards and security level of the airport. The US$ 2 million donation was funded by the State Department’s Counterterrorism Bureau and facilitated by the International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program (ICITAP) from the Department of Justice, under the oversight and concurrence of Brazil’s Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) and the Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SAC). The equipment includes the latest technology of dual view x-rays, advanced imaging technology (AIT-body scanner), and explosive trace detection (ETD) as well as classroom and on-the-job training for screeners. The project aims to increase aviation security, mitigate risk, and reinforce the strong partnership between the United States and Brazil.  The brand-new equipment is the same that TSA uses in 440 airports in the United States. It will make screening more effective while ensuring a better travel experience for passengers. Viracopos is the first airport in South America to receive a donation of this magnitude for screening equipment. The newly inaugurated checkpoint layout provides another layer of security for the global aviation industry and ensures the safe and secure transportation of people and commerce. IOTA

New IOTA trade body to champion optical security technologies

A new international trade body, IOTA, has been launched to represent and promote the wide range of authentication, anti-counterfeiting and automation optical security technologies available to global law enforcement agencies, central governments and brand owners. The International Optical Technologies Association (formerly the International Hologram Manufacturers Association) comes as holography – once the cornerstone of anti-counterfeiting solutions – has evolved and now features within a broader spectrum of optical security technologies. Technologies continue to advance beyond holography and in the face of expanding market applications, security sector mergers, and acquisitions and consolidation among solutions providers. The increased demand for physical solutions is also being felt with customers and end-users requiring sustainable solutions while the challenges grow ever more intricate. IOTA membership currently embraces all developers and suppliers of security features based on technologies that in addition to holography, include micro-lens arrays, micro-mirrors, plasmonics, nano-gratings, colour change, caustics, polarisation, photonic crystals, special print-generated effects, or a combination of these. Indeed, several existing members produce optical security features beyond holography, such as SPARK® Orbital by De La Rue, RollingStar® micro-mirrors and colour shift features by Louisenthal, plasmonic features by Authentix and SURYS, and KINEGRAM® features by KURZ. As the association stands on the cusp of a transformative era, the transition to IOTA reflects a commitment to ongoing evolving markets and opening up new technology frontiers, particularly in optical security, said chair Dr Mark Deakes. He said: “I am honoured to be part of this transformative moment, building on our legacy while embracing a modern identity. Change is never easy, but it is essential for growth. IOTA is more than a rebrand; it’s a movement to lead the optical security industry into a brighter, more innovative future, and we want industry stakeholders to join us. “IOTA will spearhead a new era of authentication, anti-counterfeiting, and automation, always pushing the boundaries of possibility. We will continue to evolve in line with the exciting technologies we represent to ensure the interests of members and manufacturers are to the fore and their voices heard.” Building on the IHMA’s legacy and global work in highlighting the role played by commercial holography, IOTA aims to create separate chapters or sections and focus its activities on document security, brand protection, packaging, art, and industrial. A series of user-focused webinars are planned this year that will target key optical security sectors while presentations at several industry conferences will showcase the Association’s work and ambitions. Gallagher Security’s latest Industry Trends Report

Gallagher Security has unveiled its Security Industry Trends Report 2025, offering insights into the rapid evolution of security systems and the broader role they play in business operations worldwide. This year’s report shines a spotlight on an often overlooked, but critical factor in the security industry’s success, people. The 2025 report highlights an underrepresented sentiment: while advanced technologies continue to reshape the industry, understanding the human element remains the cornerstone of success. With insights from End Users, Channel Partners, and Consultants, Gallagher’s report explores how growing demands for trusted partnerships, usability, and purpose-driven innovation are setting the stage for reimagined security solutions. “The speed of change in our industry has never been greater,” says Chief Executive Mark Junge. “However, what stands out in this year’s report is a shift in how businesses view security – not just as protection, but as a tool for fostering trust, operational efficiency, and data-driven insights. These findings challenge us to ask, ‘What if security is capable of so much more?’” The 2025 report emphasizes the interplay of technology and relationships, revealing key trends: Trusted Relationships Take Priority: End Users consistently cite trust, support, and strong partnerships as the most decisive factors when choosing security solutions. The report highlights how human connections are becoming the differentiating factor in a crowded market, urging security vendors to prioritize collaboration and responsiveness. Ease of Use Takes Center Stage: As systems become more integrated and complex, usability is a top priority for organizations seeking solutions that align with non-technical staff needs. The Rising Influence of IT: As cybersecurity and cloud solutions dominate discussions, IT departments are taking a leading role in decision-making. This combined with greater touchpoints across organizations is resulting in an increased need for market education to overcome misconceptions. Expanding Value: Businesses are leveraging security systems to support broader goals, from sustainability initiatives to improved operational efficiencies, with 56% of End User respondents reporting strategies in place for optimizing operations through their security systems. “We’re seeing businesses rethink what they need from their security systems,” Junge adds. “It’s about more than features; it’s about choosing the right partner to navigate these challenges together and unlock greater possibilities. By focusing on the people who interact with these systems, we’re better positioned to foster trust and deliver lasting value.” The Gallagher Security Industry Trends Report 2025 is now available for download and provides a comprehensive look at the insights driving the future of security.
