NTT Communications achieves Cyber Essentials Certification

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within the NTT Group (NYSE: NTT), announced that it has achieved the Cyber Essentials certification in the UK. This certification shows NTT Com’s continuing commitment to protect its IT systems and those of its customers from common internet-based attacks by adhering to a government-endorsed standard for cyber health.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has estimated that there were over 2.5 million reported incidents of cybercrime committed in England and Wales in the last year making it the single most common offence. Cyber Essentials provides a clear statement of the basic controls all organisations should implement to mitigate the risk from common internet based threats and is a mechanism for organisations to demonstrate to customers, investors, insurers and others that they have taken these essential precautions.

To achieve Cyber Essentials certification, NTT Com submitted for verification the Cyber Essentials questionnaire by checking compliance of its systems that are at risk from Internet-based threats. The certification covers the five basic principles around boundary firewalls and Internet gateways, secure configuration, access control, malware protection, and patch management.

The UK government recently classed cyber security as one of the top four threats against the UK alongside natural disasters, international terrorism and military intervention. NTT Com adopts a multi-pronged approach to cyber security: it has been ISO27001 certified since 2006 and is compliant with v3.0 of the PCI DSS certification in Europe.

Neil Wheelwright, Director of Information Security and Compliance, NTT Europe said:

“With the growing number of cybercrimes, this assessment will help lower our risk of serious data and financial loss, and is a reassurance to our customers that we have taken steps to be fundamentally cyber safe. With the UK government now requiring bidders for certain sensitive and personal information handling contracts to be certified against the Cyber Essentials scheme, this will position us as a secure choice in such projects.”
