Schneider Electric’s Esmi access control system gets a wireless upgrade with Aperio® locks
With Esmi and Aperio®, facility managers can forget about mechanical keys and the hassles of physical key management, saving their organization time and money in the process. Aperio® wireless locks from ASSA ABLOY are now integrated with the Schneider Electric Esmi Access system. Existing and new Esmi customers can extend their access control system to many more doors than would ever be feasible using standard wired security.
This extensive online integration gives security managers more control, with real-time event logging and audit trails on demand. Everyday users benefit, too: the same RFID-powered smart card can open both wired and new Aperio®-equipped wireless doors.
Seppo Junnonaho, Product Manager, Access Control, at Schneider Electric says:
“It’s easy for facility managers to extend and enhance an existing Esmi installation by swapping any remaining mechanical locking cylinders for Aperio® cylinders. Aperio® locks can add online access control wirelessly to exterior and interior doors, from fire and safety doors with regulatory requirements to meeting rooms, labs and offices. The result is an instant security upgrade, at a very affordable price.”
This new Esmi integration includes multiple battery-powered Aperio® devices to fit almost any door. The online Aperio® security lock (L100) is available without or with a PINpad, to enable card+PIN multi-factor authentication at the door if required. Aperio® online cylinders (C100) are compatible with multiple door formats, so there’s no need to change door hardware. They are also fast and easy to install: on YouTube you can see a technician complete an Aperio® cylinder installation, from start to finish, in under 2 minutes (at www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta8J6vW9Zy4). The Aperio® online escutcheon (E100) is also integrated, and available either with or without an inbuilt PINpad.
After fitting Aperio® wireless locks onsite, all access decisions are made by the Esmi Access system and administered from the same familiar Esmi Access user interface. Integrated Aperio® devices connect with the Esmi system via a network of up to 100 IP Hubs (AH40), each of which can communicate wirelessly and securely with up to 15 Aperio® locks within a typical range of 15 to 25 metres. Aperio® hubs are also easy to install, and operate via a Power over Ethernet (PoE) connection. TCP/IP communications between each hub and the Esmi system are TLS encrypted. Functionality including remote unlocking, door state notifications and battery status are all enabled for Aperio® locks operating within an Esmi Access system. Newly integrated Aperio® devices run on the V3 software platform, which maintains remote opening function with a typical heartbeat of under 10 seconds’ communication time between lock and system — so site users waste less of their day hanging around at doors. Aperio® is compatible with standard RFID technologies, including iCLASS®, iCLASS® SE, Seos®, MIFARE® Classic and DESFire®.
Cost-effective
Not all doors require the highest security level, which wired access control typically provides. Doors with basic to higher-level needs are perfect for Aperio® wireless locks. Installing Aperio® devices is much cheaper than standard hard-wired doors, because there’s no cabling or invasive building work. No wiring means there’s no expensive electricians to employ, and no need to tidy up after contractors. Maintenance is simple: an Aperio® lock is powered by a standard lithium-ion battery which typically needs replacing every 2 years.
Aperio® devices are also very energy-efficient. They are not connected to the mains, and use minimal power when inactive — only to keep the heartbeat alive for remote operation and reporting online status. Readers only “wake up” either when presented with a credential or controlled from the central Esmi Access system. As a result, one wireless lock uses approximately 0.001 kWh of energy per year — a tiny fraction of the energy consumed by a typical wired lock and reader.
Trusted worldwide
Aperio® wireless access control is already trusted to secure premises all over the world, including hospitals, industrial plants, universities, public buildings and large arenas — and in venues large and small stretching from Stavanger to South Africa. What makes Aperio® so popular? The real key is seamless integration between Aperio® devices and a host access control system.
Chris Bone, Vice President Digital Access Solutions at ASSA ABLOY EMEA says:
“These days, so many customers expect their security systems to work together smoothly, to communicate seamlessly without creating unnecessary double workloads for facility staff. Aperio® was built for integration from the ground up, meaning that Esmi customers see and use just one system. Aperio® devices work alongside new or already-installed wired doors and other security functions without any problems.”
