Leading fire and security firm Scotshield and North Lanarkshire Council have secured a top Security Excellence Award thanks to pioneering work with Town Centre Activities, a division of North Lanarkshire Council.

Scotshield, based in Airdrie, won the Integrated Security Solution of the Year category as a result of its work to update the CCTV camera monitoring system throughout the region.

The firm has been recognised for the installation of the first ‘next generation’ Central Monitoring Unit (CMU) in theUK, which features the very latest telecoms and IT infrastructure equipment used in CCTV monitoring.

Town Centre Activities, on behalf of the Council, monitor more than 600 public space CCTV cameras across the region from a centralised hub with wall monitors and specially trained operatives to manage the system.

The Council estimate that the total savings on running the recording and storage equipment, following the installation of the new system, at up to 60%.

As a result of the success of Scotshield’s initial project involving 280 of the Council’s cameras, the company was awarded a further contract to cover 27 tower blocks inNorth Lanarkshire, with an additional 200 CCTV cameras.

Michael MacBean, Business Development Director at Scotshield, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic news for Scotshield to win the award for the Integrated Security Solution of the Year for our work with North Lanarkshire Council.  The Security Excellence Awards are key markers within our industry and highlight the best projects theUK’s security sector has to offer so we’re very pleased to be recognised for our work.

“It is very rewarding to know that the systems we install are working to fight crime and help make communities inNorth Lanarkshiresafer.

“Our highly skilled and qualified teams across the business should be proud of themselves for delivering an exceptional integrated solution for North Lanarkshire Council and for the benefit of people in the local authority area.”

Emma Walker, Senior Manager for Town Centre Activities, said: “We wanted to deliver safe communities forNorth Lanarkshireand greater value for money for council tax payers.  This meant applying the latest technology to meet the demands of the operation. The technology and the way in which it is used show clear benefits for the Council and we can now explore options to expand the system to support a wider range of Council responsibilities.

“Scotshield came up with innovative recommendations which needed to demonstrate significant operational savings.  This combined with strong service guarantees gave Town Centre Activities a level of reassurance that the technology delivers the service standards we expect.”

North Lanarkshire’s state-of-the-art CMU now monitors 585 cameras. It covers a total of seven town centres includingCoatbridge, Cumbernauld, Motherwell, Bellshill, Wishaw, Kilsyth and Airdrie; seven schools and colleges; eight waste recycling centres; two retail parks and more than twenty major residential areas.
