Mobile security officer Julian Heath-Coleman has made the ultimate sacrifice to help his daughter raise funds for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust – he has bid farewell to his beloved moustache!
Julian – known as Jules to his colleagues at Plymouth-based Securi-Guard Fire and Security – pledged to have his ‘tache shaved off along with his hair if he could raise £200 for Bev Heath-Coleman, 29 from Hayle in Cornwall, who is taking part in an expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of the charity.
The 52-year-old couldn’t believe it when family, friends and workmates donated £650 to the appeal so he had no choice but to go through with the shave at Securi-Guard’s Plymouth HQ in Estover.
Cindy Timson, a cleaner at the company with hairdressing skills, volunteered to carry out the cut while Managing Director at Securi-Guard Monitoring and keen photographer Kim Precious was on hand to capture the momentous event on camera.
Julian- who has worked for Securi-Guard since 2004 – said he was shocked and delighted at the amount of money he had received – which included a donation from Securi-Guard.
“I wanted to do something to help Bev raise the money she needed to make this trip of a lifetime, as well as help the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust, which does such a fantastic job,” said Julian.
“People have been so generous and I cannot thank them enough. I think they all realised what a major event losing my moustache would be as I have had it for the best part of 30 years.
“Having the hair shaved made me look visually very different, but it does feel very strange to not have the moustache having had it for so long. It was worth it though!”
Between September 11 and 22, Julian’s daughter Bev will be among a team of fundraisers who will be climbing to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, the world’s highest free standing mountain.
The eight day hike will take Bev from the foot of the mountain through lush rainforest and across desert plateaus with spectacular views, before she reaches the snow covered Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
