Staff and students guaranteed safe passage at Hamburg’s HafenCity

When it came to protecting the new site of Hamburg’s HafenCity University, only a modern, flexible access control system would make the grade. The university turned to SIEMENS and ASSA ABLOY and to supply it.

The university’s goals were to maximize the transparency of site security and to minimize unnecessary costs. The answer was innovative electronic access control from SIEMENS, fully integrated with ASSA ABLOY`s wireless Aperio® lock technology. The landmark waterfront site has been fitted with around 500 battery-powered Aperio® Offline electronic cylinders connected to the SIEMENS access control system.

The new university building accommodates around 2,400 students plus 460 staff, and includes flexible-use spaces including a media centre and library, seminar rooms, laboratories, and offices for research groups. Students and staff open doors with RFID-enabled smart cards.

The flexibility of Aperio® means HCU’s IT department now has greater control and can respond to organizational changes in real time. To enhance security, the validity period can be adjusted for different use authorizations. In combination with online readers and doors, additional doors can be fitted with wireless Aperio® Offline cylinders whenever needed.

About Aperio®: Available on the global market place, ASSA ABLOY’s Aperio® Technology enables a wide range of access control providers to cost-effectively integrate non-wired doors with mechanical locks into access control systems.

About HafenCity University Hamburg: Around 2,400 students are enrolled at HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU), on courses including architecture, civil engineering, geomatics, city planning and urban design. The striking new university building lies on the southern bank of the Grasbrook, in one of Hamburg’s most important redevelopment locations.
