Hanwha Techwin launches Wisenet Public View Monitors with built-in camera

A new range of Wisenet Public View Monitors (PVMs) equipped with a built-in SSL connected 2-megapixel camera have been introduced to help retailers deter fraudsters and shoplifters. Offering a choice of 10”, 27” and 32” monitors, the 3 new PVMs are designed to be located at store entrances, shopping aisles, till points or self-checkout pay points. With an SD/SDHC/SDXC slot which can facilitate up to 512GB of data storage, the PVMs provide store management with the opportunity to display a slide show which can include supplier adverts, own-brand product promotions and special offers. A default blinking ‘Recording in progress’ message is superimposed over the displayed graphics to let would be thieves know they are on camera, with operators having the option to customise the message and configure its size, colour, opaqueness and positioning on the monitor. Face Detection Supported by the Wisenet WAVE and SSM video management platforms as well as Wisenet NVRs, the ONVIF Conformant PVMs can be programmed so that images captured by the cameras are either continuously recorded or when prompted to do so by built-in face or motion detection video analytics. The face and motion detection feature can also be configured to switch the display to ‘live’ view to make people aware they are being watched, as they will be able to see themselves on the monitor as they enter a store or walk down a shopping aisle. The display reverts to the slide show after a specified number of seconds. The PVMs, which can be integrated with tagging (EAS) systems to record images of people who might be leaving the store with stolen items, also provide support for the AI-Masking, AI-Bio, AI-Face-Detect and AI-Occupancy video analytics applications, developed by Hanwha Techwin’s technology partner, A.I. Tech. The ultra-low light capabilities of the new PVMs, together with Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology performing at up to 150dB, enables the built-in camera to capture clear, sharp images in strongly contrasting light conditions at, for example, store entrances where strong sunlight may be streaming in. Power over Ethernet All three PVMs can be powered by 12V DC, with the Wisenet SMT-1030PV also offering the option to utilise Power over Ethernet (PoE+) if there isn’t an existing power supply close to where the PVM is being installed. A single cable of up to 100m is all that is needed to provide both power to the SMT-1030PV and for network communications The three new Wisenet PVMs, which can be mounted by using standard VESA brackets, are as follows: SMT-1030PV: 10” monitor with LED backlight and 1024 x 600 display resolution. SMT-2730PV: 27” monitor with LED backlight, HDMI input and Full HD display. SMT-3230PV: 32” monitor with LED backlight, HDMI input and Full HD display. Loss prevention strategy “With retailers increasingly relying on PVMs to play an important role within their strategic approach to loss prevention, we have designed our new models to make it quick and easy, as well as cost-effective, to deploy them across a large number of stores,” said Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe. “As the only PVMs available which, for cyber security and data protection purposes, are supplied with a complete built-in SSL connected camera, they eliminate the need for system integrators to install and connect a separate supporting camera, which some other manufacturers’ PVMs require. By building in an intuitive user interface, we have also made it extremely easy for busy store managers to take full advantage of the PVM’s functionality, including the ability to utilise the monitor for advertisement and signage using the slide show mode.”     To stay up to date on the latest, trends, innovations, people news and company updates within the global security market please register to receive our newsletter here. Eagle Eye Networks 2021 trend report

Customers are asking for the cloud; Advanced analytics will transform video surveillance systems into even more valuable business solutions; Compliance requirements are constantly evolving; IT departments are engaging with, and in many cases owning video surveillance; and, Customers are expecting systems to be open and connected, these are just some of the main trends outlined by cloud-based security provider Eagle Eye Networks.  “A number of factors are driving the video surveillance trends in 2021,” said Hans Kahler, vice president of operations. “Innovation from companies like Eagle Eye Networks and our partners is leading and meeting the demands of customers for their video surveillance systems to provide business insights in addition to security. Combine the promise of AI and cloud video surveillance with the volatility, instability, and remote work environment of 2020 and we have an environment where people are looking for their video surveillance and security systems to deliver more business value than ever before. The acceleration of cloud adoption and use of analytics to provide improved security and drive business improvement will make 2021 a transformative year for the industry.” Video Surveillance and Security Trends for 2021: Customers are Asking for Cloud: The shift to the benefits of cloud in the video surveillance space are powerful and undeniable, including major cost savings, heightened data security, remote access and maintenance, flexible storage and retention, scalability, increased stability, and disaster recovery. Analytics and AI Turn Security Systems into Business Solutions: Video surveillance systems are not just for security anymore, they’re also a valuable tool for business intelligence (BI). While AI has been talked about for several years, its deployment has lagged. This year, we’ll see AI move from the lab to practical adoption. Compliance Requirements are Constantly Evolving: As video surveillance becomes a more widely adopted tool across industries and continents and more industries are using video for compliance purposes, regulating its use is becoming more prevalent. IT Departments More Engaged and Owning Video Surveillance: IT leaders have not only gotten involved in the video management system, they’re actually owning it. As part of their IT strategy, corporations are leveraging video for business process improvement while reducing unnecessary operational overhead. Demand for Open, Integrated Systems: An open and connected ecosystem makes it possible for businesses and developers to integrate any number of applications on a single video management system (VMS) platform. The platform handles all the heavy lifting of interfacing with the cameras, recording video, securely transmitting and storing video to the cloud, and making video available for use in the integrated applications. The days of vendors “locking” users into their cameras or touting “hybrid” systems (which require upgrades to vendor hardware to get new features) will not be accepted. Three Cybersecurity Resolutions Every Business Needs in 2021

Three Cybersecurity Resolutions Every Business Needs in 2021, by: Edwin Weijdema, Global Technologist, Product Strategy at Veeam Being able to retain customer trust has never been more important – or more difficult – following the events of 2020. With so much disarray and widespread changes to working patterns, such as the mass migration to remote working, the job of keeping businesses secure has never been more difficult. Between more sophisticated cybercriminals and immense pressure to ensure governance on compliance, 2021 is already shaping up to be a minefield. And as such, cybersecurity has risen to the top of most organizations’ agendas. So, as we have just entered what promises to a complicated year, here are three cybersecurity resolutions every business should consider in the new year. Watch out – Dark Clouds are on the horizon Businesses haven’t been the only ones accelerating their digital transformation this year – cybercriminals have been hard at it too. There has been a sharp rise in ‘Dark Clouds’ as cybercriminals have migrated to the cloud, often for the same reasons businesses have – cloud allows them to avoid big up-front capital expenses, pay monthly for their shady businesses and scale up only when they need to. Coupled with the ability to access information from anywhere, it’s no wonder we’re seeing cybercriminals innovate. This ranges from cloud-based caches filled with stolen user data such as email addresses and authentication credentials, to personal identifiable information (PII) such as scans of passports, driver’s licenses and bank invoices. Data exfiltration has become so valuable it’s now the backbone of all cyberattacks. And it may only take one breach to ruin your reputation and relationship with your customers. That’s why not having an effective cybersecurity program in place puts your business continuity at risk. Because, come 2021, you’re either going to be one of those proactive organizations aggressively looking to strengthen your systems ahead of time, or the other type of business not doing that – and becoming more vulnerable with every passing day. Team up – cybersecurity has turned personal Between collaborating cybercriminals, the upwards trajectory of data growth and the distributed workforce, the risk factor for every business is accelerating. This is one reason why we expect to see most businesses increase their general IT spending by around 5-10% in the new year, despite the economic impact of the pandemic. And we expect most of that allocation to go towards IT security. But even with these investments, it won’t be enough to cover all the potential threat vectors. So, businesses will still be forced to place strategic bets across their people, processes and technology in the hope of covering their weakest points. For example, will you invest in the education of employees (after all, people are always going to be the biggest weakness), or put that money into optimizing and securing processes by investing in a Security Operations Center (SOC)? Or, will new technology be the most effective investment? It’s impossible for every business to get this mix perfectly right, so business leaders need to also strategize how best to avoid cyberattacks. Too often, businesses expect their security team to handle this. But most of the time, this leads to an over-reliance on IT professionals who are already stretched thin by constantly putting out fires. They don’t also have the time to develop this strategy. That’s why making sure every member of the company plays in the cybersecurity challenge is key. For example, while employees may be a business’ biggest weakness, they also form the ‘human firewall’ and need to be equipped to do just that – which takes education. But don’t let the collaboration end there – your entire ecosystem of peer-like organizations, experts, suppliers, vendors and even the government should be aligned and geared towards combating this threat. Cybercriminals are already working together on a large scale, sharing information about critical vulnerabilities, breached systems and targets extremely fast. So, don’t fight alone; work with contacts in your local law enforcement agency – for example NESA, The National Electronic Security Authority in the UAE, to figure out how to best utilize risk management models and resiliency plans. By ensuring you follow government regulations, the increased alignment and information sharing between the government and private organizations will help speed up the identification of threats and lead to faster resolutions. Gear up – look to hybrid security and intelligent backup to stay ahead Technology is always going to be the heart of your cybersecurity fight, but no one product is going to maximize your cybersecurity state – you need to invest in your desired outcome. To do that, organizations need to look for software-defined models integrated with external services – a hybrid security approach. This includes cloud-based software such as PenTesting-as-a-Service (PtaaS), Scanning-as-a-Service (ScaaS), Network Defense-as-a-Service (NDaaS), Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) and Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS). A hybrid security approach which has your internal security teams connected to external cybersecurity experts and law enforcement will keep you the most secure, while also helping raise the experience level of your security teams. Conversely, backup should play a bigger role within organizations. It not only gives organizations the ability to restore and forensically analyze data in the event of a breach, but in a world that’s becoming more critically reliant on ballooning data stores to improve customer experience, backup can help better utilize it. We’re already seeing some organizations combine application owners, backup, analytics and security teams in a new (virtual) data management team. This way, they can tackle the challenges around exposed data, service level expectation and risk growth in the most beneficial and economical way. Ultimately, for businesses to really keep up with their growing data and continue to derive useful insights from it, they will need to invest in tools powered by Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to speed up data extraction and analysis processes. As these technologies are also significant weapons in cybersecurity as well aiding in data-driven decision-making, their adoption is expected to grow at

Bewildered by the choice?

With system designers having so many options when it comes to specifying the most appropriate cameras to monitor large areas, Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe, provides an overview of the merits of some of the most suitable camera formats. PTZ cameras PTZ cameras have traditionally been used for city and wide area surveillance applications such as airports, car parks, shopping centres, sports stadia and warehouses, with operators able to track the movement of objects and zoom in to observe close-up detail of any activity. The ability of an operator to proactively monitor an incident and zoom in to verify what is occurring, ensures they are able to quickly decide on the most appropriate response. In addition, many PTZ cameras feature auto-tracking, as well as continuous pan and pre-set positioning, which means that images of a moving object will be captured and recorded even when operators are distracted or are away from their workstations. The deterrent effect of PTZ cameras configured to automatically tour an area should also not be underestimated as they will create a strong impression to would be offenders that they are being watched, even if the images captured by the cameras are not being monitored in real-time. 8K cameras Whilst it should be emphasised that PTZ cameras still have a big part to play in detecting anti-social or criminal activity, recent advances in video surveillance technology has meant that system designers now have the option to consider specifying other types of cameras which, depending on the application, might be more suitable. The sharpness and clarity of the images captured by 8K video surveillance cameras, for example, simply ‘need to be seen, to be believed’. In reality, very few users are likely to deploy 8K cameras with the intention of just monitoring an entire field of view. The value of these cameras comes from the fact that 8K is the equivalent of 16 x 1080p Full HD images and this means that a single camera can capture a vast amount of information, enabling operators to digitally zoom into a very small part of the scene without any pixilation of the image. For this reason, a football stadium is an excellent example of where an 8K camera can be put to very good use as it would be capable of capturing evidence grade images of 20,000 or more fans occupying a football stand. As such, its price/performance ratio makes the 8K camera a viable, cost-effective alternative to the deployment of multiple fixed or PTZ cameras. ‘Horses for courses’ When it comes to deciding whether an ultra-high resolution 8K or PTZ is the best camera format for any given location, it will very much depend on what the end-user wishes to achieve. However, budget limitations also need to be taken into consideration. In simple terms, an 8K camera is a highly impressive, high performance option if there is a requirement to continually record a camera’s entire field of view at the same time that an operator might need to zoom into a specific area of interest. However, PTZ cameras are a much lower price option and are ideal for when operators need to constantly scan a wide area of view, whilst having the flexibility when necessary, to quickly zoom in to see what may be occurring in greater detail. The case for PTZ cameras is further strengthened when real-time monitoring is more important than recording video for evidence purposes and equally important, the latest generation of PTZ cameras are equipped with adaptive IR technology which adjusts the angle of the camera’s built-in IR LEDs to match the level of zoom. Multi-sensor, multi-directional cameras Multi-directional cameras typically offer the capabilities of two, three or four video surveillance cameras in a single housing and yet, as they only have a single IP connection, you will only need to purchase one VMS license. Those equipped with two separate lenses are designed to capture high definition images of adjacent areas. Depending on the required field of view, there is a choice of interchangeable lens modules which can be easily fitted on site by an installation engineer. These multi-streaming cameras significantly reduce the costs which would normally be associated with installing two separate cameras to monitor, for example, an L-shaped area such as two sections of a corridor or two sides of a building. There are also multi-directional cameras available which feature four separate sensors, with operators able to choose from a broad range of customisable angles and zoom settings per sensor. This offers cost savings for both system integrators and end users, as multi-sensor cameras use less cable, conduit and mounting hardware, compared to what would normally be required to enable up to four separate cameras to do the same job.  With less network connections, they also require fewer switches. Designed for monitoring large open areas with just one camera, the images captured by the four sensors can be seamlessly stitched to produce a panoramic image covering up to 220° images. Life will also be much easier for installers if models equipped with motorised PTRZ gimbals are specified. These will reduce on-site times as they enable engineers to remotely pan, tilt and rotate the lens’ positions in order to set the camera’s field of view. Built-in PTZ It is worth noting that some manufacturers, such as Hanwha Techwin, offer 4 channel multi-sensor cameras with an additional integral PTZ camera. This can be configured to automatically zoom in and track a moving object or move to a user configured pre-set position when the motion detection function of one of the four camera sensors detects activity. This addition of a PTZ camera means users are able to avoid incurring the higher capital, installation and maintenance costs of deploying 5 separate cameras to cover a large area, whilst achieving the same level of functionality. 360⁰ cameras A single 360⁰ camera will quite often offer the most efficient and cost-effective way of monitoring a large area and particularly so when a

HOCHIKI Europe provides state of the art life safety platform for Jardine Motors Showroom

A new £5 million car showroom in Tonbridge, Kent owned by the Jardine Motors Group is utilising L@titude – a state-of-the-art fire alarm control panel produced by leading life safety system manufacturer, Hochiki Europe. The showroom, which showcases high-value Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles, needed a state-of-the-art control and indication system which would link its various heat, flame and smoke detectors from around the space. The selected system, the innovative L@titude product from Hochiki Europe, was specified due to its ultra-reliability, flexibility, user friendliness and accessibility while still being able to fit in with the showroom’s sleek aesthetics. Jardine Motors, founded in 1969, comprises seventy locations across the UK that represent seventeen different car manufacturers. Its prestigious showrooms embody the company’s ethos of investing in spaces which provide customers with high-end experiences. A powerful and sophisticated solution The facilities management team at Jardine Motors have made use of the new addressable life safety platform, L@titude, to help protect its two floors of high-value space. As with all of Hochiki Europe’s products, L@titude is compliant with the highest European and global safety standards, including EN54-2, EN54-4 and EN54-13. Hochiki Europe designed the panel to maximise usability and ease of operation so maintenance teams and duty managers can instantly locate safety breaches in real-time from any location. The product uses a full-colour touchscreen display which allows for clear and concise information to be displayed about each detection device within the showroom. The product also has a 10,000 capacity event log, up to 144 zone indicators and can support up to 5,000 cause and effect entries. To further support Jardine Motors, the Hochiki team worked closely with the facilities manager, Roger Dawkins, at the Tonbridge showroom, giving him a guided tour around its cutting-edge manufacturing plant in Gillingham as well as consultation on the final aesthetic design of the new system. Minimal disruption The modular nature of the control panel meant all field wiring could be connected to a passive motherboard; to which electronic hardware can be added and reconfigured without disconnecting older wiring. This, in turn, enabled a quick turnaround of the project, allowing works to be completed on time and within budget. Neil Eves, systems manager for Hochiki Europe, commented: “After understanding the requirements of the showroom, we knew L@titude was the perfect solution. Operating from a 2-8 loop circuit capacity (With 2- 16 loop variant available if required) it can support up to 2,000 zones, recording 10,000 incidents making it ideal for larger developments such as this. To demonstrate its capabilities and our unique manufacturing operations, we invited Roger down for a personal tour of the Hochiki Europe’s factory to show, first hand, our detailed production process for a wide variety of products.” After the installation, Roger Dawkins commented: “We were absolutely blown away with the professionalism and level of support shown by Hochiki Europe; both of which were demonstrated from our tour of the manufacturing facility in Gillingham and their ongoing liaison. Having the chance to see the production and design process gave us reassurance in their ability to provide state-of-the-art life safety systems which would meet our needs as a business. This end-to-end support was a truly personalised experience, with Hochiki Europe even taking onboard our suggestions for improvements. Taking such an interest in our needs confirmed our decision in choosing them as our manufacturer and ultimately our trust in their products.” Jardine Motors is currently exploring the roll out of L@titude across all its showrooms nationwide thanks to the initial success of its life safety protection in Kent.
