Intel Security highlights vulnerabilities of ‘smart future’ at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017, connected cars, the future of smart homes and, of course, the newest handsets are top of the agenda. Intel Security’s latest findings show consumers are being tempted by the efficiency and entertainment of such connected devices, revealing the average person now spends 38% of their time at home online. Despite leading increasingly connected lifestyles, 41% of respondents said they have no idea how to check if their connected devices have ever been compromised, and a further 32% said they were unsure how to check if devices had been breached. People not only need to understand the security risks associated with laptops and tablets, but also with connected devices such as smart TVs, speakers and connected cars, and manufacturers must take responsibility for ensuring security is built in to the foundations of new products. Humax embeds McAfee Secure Home Platform in latest router As more connected devices are brought into the home, a new partnership between Humax, Intel® and Intel Security will ensure robust connectivity and security is embedded into Humax’s Quantum T9 router. McAfee Secure Home Platform will provide a built-in layer of security that automatically protects internet-connected devices on a user’s home network from a variety of threats. This offers people a flexible way to manage and secure their connected devices in the home, apply parental controls, and receive alerts about potential threats in real-time. “Our recent research showed that more than three quarters of parents (80%) are concerned about their children interacting with a social predator or cybercriminal online,” comments Raj Samani (pictured left), EMEA CTO of Intel Security. “Yet 34% of parents do not keep track of their children’s internet usage, and 35% say that they would monitor their children’s online activity if there was an easier way of doing it.” “Partnering with Humax will further help us to empower parents to actively manage how their families interact with connected devices in the home and protect them from potential risks. As we move towards the 5G smart and connected home of the future, internet usage within the home and the levels of data created will only increase, as will our reliance on apps to control our home environment. With this, we must ensure the appropriate security is installed in every touchpoint, from the network to the router to the devices themselves, as well as the apps and software controlling them,” continues Raj Samani. Dead apps can be deadly It’s not just apps live in app stores that represent a risk. Telemetry data collected by McAfee Labs shows that more than 500,000 devices still have dead apps installed and are actively used. With more than 2 million apps in each of the major app stores, malicious apps find ways through the store curators initial quality-control process. In the past year, more than 4,000 apps were removed from Google Play, without notification to users. These users and the organisations they work for are still exposed to any vulnerabilities, privacy risks, or malware contained in these dead apps. One recent example is a password stealer, distributed on Google Play as a variety of utilities and tools to acquire Instagram followers or analyse usage. The malware leads the user to a phishing website with a simple design that makes it difficult to distinguish between the legitimate and the fake, easily capturing users’ credentials. “To avoid losing personal data to dead apps, consumers need to pay close attention to the apps they’ve downloaded and research the developer and reviews about any app before installing it,” comments Raj Samani. “They should also look for a security tool that can identify apps which are no longer on the store and, even better, can provide some information on why they were removed.” Intel Security’s top tips for protecting your personal data: Lock down your devices. Our devices are like an extension of our bodies. It’s imperative that they are locked down with a strong PIN code, as well as complex and unique passwords to prevent unauthorized access. Use a multi-factor authentication (MFA) solution, like True Key by Intel Security that will combine your strong passwords with an extra layer of security – like your fingerprint or facial recognition. Keep your devices updated. Be sure to update your devices when new versions of the operating system or applications become available. Updates often include critical security fixes designed to patch and protect from attacks. Take control of your home network. Setting up a guest Wi-Fi network allows visitors to access the internet but keeps your home network private and isolated from their devices. You can also separate your IoT devices (smart home devices, wearables, etc.) from traditional connected devices (laptops, smartphones, tablets, etc.) where more secure information is stored, so if an IoT devices is compromised, the breach will be limited to devices connected to the guest network. Intel Security achieves Cyber Essentials with APMG

Intel Security achieves Cyber Essentials with APMG Cyber Security provider, Intel Security UK (formerly McAfee), has certified against the UK Government’s Cyber Essentials scheme. Working with accreditation body APMG International to achieve the certification, the move confirms Intel Security’s commitment to cyber security best practice and secures its position as a leading supplier of security solutions to the UK Government. APMG recently incorporated the Cyber Essentials scheme into its portfolio of cyber security products. Developed by the UK Government as part of a broader initiative to raise cyber security awareness and preparedness in businesses of all sizes, Cyber Essentials provides a set of criteria against which organisations can measure their cyber security systems around. Achieving the certification demonstrates to customers that a business has taken basic and essential cyber security precautions. Since October 2014, the UK Government has stipulated that organisations bidding for contracts that entail the handling of sensitive and personal data are now required to be Cyber Essentials certified. According to Maurice Cashman, Director, Enterprise Architects at Intel Security; “it was the right thing to do and the Government’s efforts to improve the resilience and security of its supply chain make absolute sense. Cyber Essentials is designed to establish a level of consistency; it’s simple enough that organisations of all sizes can achieve it, and, importantly, it’s effective in nature.” There are two levels of Cyber Essentials certification – Cyber Essentials is the standard level and is awarded after completion of a validated and verified self-assessment. To aid and facilitate the certification process, businesses are able to complete the assessment entirely through APMG’s online portal. Cyber Essentials Plus involves a more thorough assessment, which includes vulnerability testing. Both levels need to be renewed annually. Commenting on the process of working with APMG, Maurice added: “The Cyber Essentials questions are well structured, but the interview with our assessor really helped us understand the spirit of things. The questions aren’t just black and white – it’s really a risk management process that requires understanding. APMG were very responsive in answering our questions and helped us engage with the context and how the scheme fits with our services in a very clear and accessible way.
