For the 4th year running, Specialist Detection Dog Company, Wagtail UK, will be exhibiting and demonstrating at the Trading Standards Institute Conference (TSI 2014) to be held at Harrogate International Centre, UK from the 30th June to 3rd July 2014.
Alfie is a 2 ½ year old “Sprollie” (a cross between a Springer Spaniel and a Collie) and will be performing daily demonstrations showing the remarkable capabilities of a Tobacco Detection Dog. Wagtail Dogs are trained on tobacco that has been seized during operational searches, and can detect genuine tobacco and cigarettes, counterfeit tobacco and cigarettes, and Shisha tobacco.
Wagtail UK currently provides Tobacco Detection Dogs as part of the TSI managed Operation Henry.
Operation Henry aims to crack down on the supply of illicit tobacco across nine regions of England. Managed by the TSI and funded by the Department of Health, Operation Henry finances eight days of dog detection services, provided by Wagtail UK, for each of the nine regions. The operation which has been running since April 2014 has already had amazing success, with concealed stashes of tobacco being detected by the dogs in the most unlikely places; under floors, behind magnetic panels, in false cupboards, roof voids and in concealments operated by hydraulic lifts. One concealment was in a tray of cans of beer with the middle cans removed. In many cases the illicit tobacco would not have been found without the use of the dogs.
Collin Singer, Managing Director of Wagtail UK, said, “We are delighted to be able to show off the skills of our Tobacco Detection Dog Team again at this year’s TSI Conference. It is a testament not only to our dogs, but our experienced handlers too, that we have enjoyed the success with TSI and Operation Henry over the last 3 months.”
