BSIA to showcase the best of British security innovations at Intersec 2013

Members of the British Security Industry Association’s Export Council are offering an exclusive preview of the new security innovations that visitors can expect to see at Intersec 2013, which is taking place in Dubai on January 15 – 17. This year’s exhibition will see a record number of BSIA member companies taking part – 12 in total – with many concentrated on the BSIA-organised UK Security Pavilion. The BSIA is hoping to build on the success of last year’s show where 83% of Export Council members witnessed year-on-year growth in visitor numbers to their stands. As the trade association representing the UK’s private security industry, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) and its dedicated Export Council play a vital role in forging productive links between UK security companies and overseas buyers from around the world, including the Middle East. Intersec 2013 will be no exception, with the BSIA – which is attending for the 15th year – and many of its members on hand to provide valuable advice and guidance on the latest products and services that the UK has to offer. Underlining the importance of the Middle East, a recent survey showed that Intersec ranks amongst the most popular overseas events for the BSIA’s Export Council members and, crucially, the region is their most important target market with 70% of members actively seeking to increase business over the next 12 months. Comments John Davies, Chairman of the BSIA’s Export Council: “We are confident of a positive outcome from Intersec 2013. The innovations that members plan to display on their stands cover everything from the very latest integrated systems to access control, CCTV and intruder alarm technology, and switch mode power supplies.” In addition to having a presence on the UK Security Pavilion, the Export Council will once again be working closely with UKTI (UK Trade and Investment) to run a ‘Meet the Buyers’ event during Intersec. This brings suppliers and prospective customers together for face-to-face discussions on specific projects. Looking in more detail at some of the highlights of the products and services that will be displayed by BSIA’s Export Council members at Intersec 2013: Elmdene International Limited (www.elmdene.co.uk) – Hall S2, Stand S2-625C – is to promote its latest industry-leading solutions at Intersec 2013 including: highly efficient and reliable Power Supply Units (PSUs) – based around switch mode technology, a cost effective in-line UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), Power over Ethernet (PoE) standby PSU devices, plus sounders and IR exit buttons for access control. Crucially, Elmdene also intends to use Intersec 2013 to confirm ambitious expansion plans for the region: “We are anticipating a doubling of business in the Middle East during 2013,” says Ian Moore, Managing Director, Elmdene. Integrated Design Limited (IDL) (www.fastlane-turnstiles.com) – Hall S2, Stand S2-328P – is exhibiting at Intersec 2013 for the seventh year. Extremely active in the Middle East region, Tony Smith, IDL’s Marketing Manager confirms that the company is in the process of commissioning turnstiles at a very large airport project. A key focus for IDL, which will be exhibiting under the Fastlane Turnstiles brand will be the Fastlane Connect programme which brings Ethernet connectivity to its turnstiles: “At IDL we manufacture high-end glass and stainless steel barriers commonly used in high status building foyers. Adding Ethernet connectivity means they can connect to a local or wide area network without adding any software or apps to the host system.” Smith explains that this approach can deliver remote control of the turnstiles, instant feedback of alarms and the option to signal maintenance due or fault report messages. Pyronix (www.pyronix.com) – Hall S2, Stand S2-608C – will be presenting a number of advanced wireless and external detectors at Intersec 2013. Visitors can see the Enforcer system which pioneers the use of two-way wireless technology and secured the ‘Innovation of the Year’ at the Security Excellence Awards 2012 held in London. The Enforcer range is to expand with new additions including the GSM with SMS, KX15DT-WE (wireless dual-technology detector), and the KX25LR-WE (wireless 25m long-range detector). Another highlight planned is a new external detector, the XD10TTAM. This offers patented technologies such as Tri-Digital Detection Signal Processing and Tri-Anti-Mask-Technology to protect the exterior as well as the interior of properties. Pyronix believes this represents ‘the future of external protection’ and says it is adapted for the most extreme of outdoor environments.’ Dedicated Micros (www.dedicatedmicros.com) – Hall 2, Stand 2-112C – is to display its breakthrough Closed IPTV technology. This is described as a secure segregated network achieved through a dual addressing scheme and the automatic creation of VLANs. Salim Idris, General Manager for Dedicated Micros in the Middle East, reports that IP cameras and end points are protected from outside attack by the exchange of a secure key: “This enables the creation of alerts if there is any external interference.” Beyond this, Idris confirms that Dedicated Micros is to reveal a plug-and-play, no-configuration, NVR called the Media Server, so installers and users can configure and use IP CCTV just like analogue CCTV. Also being unveiled is a highly secure solution for the retail banking market which, Idris says, has been approved by several top banks in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council): “The new DV-IP ATM Advance is a hybrid DVR/NVR providing long-term recording of up to a year to meet the requirements of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) and offers breakthrough options like mirror recording, HDMI outputs and the ability to capture Arabic and English transaction data in a secure format.” TDSi (www.tdsi.co.uk) – Hall 4, Stand 4-302C – will be spotlighting a number of cutting edge innovations during Intersec 2013. The company’s new biometric reader, the DIGIgarde PLUS, is a multitasking fingerprint biometric access control and time and attendance reader that is compatible with fingerprints, MIFARE cards and PINS. “Significantly, the DIGIgarde PLUS reader can be used in stand-alone mode for time and attendance applications and to control access to a single door, or can be integrated into an access control system, which

BSIA spotlights Middle East as growing market for British security solutions

With Intersec 2013 in Dubai (15 – 17 January) fast approaching we talk to John Davies, chairman of the Export Council of the BSIA (British Security Industry Association) about the work of the Export Council in promoting British expertise in the security sector and the strong business growth experienced by its members in the Middle East region over the past 12 months. A trend which Davies believes is set to continue for 2013. John Davies, who is managing director and principal owner, of  BSIA member company TDSi is an enthusiastic advocate of the BSIA’s Export Council and the security products and services its members can offer. He is currently engaged, along with his colleagues, in efforts to expand participation in the Council: “We are undertaking a major drive to get more BSIA companies involved and, thankfully, this already seems to be reaping rewards as membership has risen by an impressive 10% year-on-year. I know from first hand experience running a company [TDSi] that the Export Council offers an invaluable forum for information exchange, and exclusive research, on key regional markets. This insight can make a real difference to the success, or otherwise, of businesses on the ground – just knowing who to speak to and where you can find help provides a real step-up in an increasingly competitive environment.” Davies also believes that the BSIA connection helps to breakdown barriers and add an extra degree of credibility in the marketplace: “Whilst it is not a regulatory thing, being part of the BSIA and the Export Council gives confidence to prospective customers that you know what you are doing and, consequently, it is worth paying attention to the solutions being proposed.” Connecting with Buyers Looking in more detail at the role of the Export Council, Davies explains that it is tasked, primarily, with forging productive links between UK security companies and overseas buyers across the globe including, crucially, in the Middle East: “This is an ongoing process and the Intersec exhibition in Dubai remains very much the focal point for the Export Council’s activities in this pivotal region.” According to Davies there is strong demand for the best that British providers can offer, particularly when that is associated with an ability to comply with international standards and best practice, something which, he claims, BSIA member companies are well placed to offer. “In fact this year’s event will be the 15th time that the BSIA has attended Intersec and this time around we hope to have more companies taking part than ever before.” Focused on Intersec The security-related innovations that BSIA members are planning to display on-stand during Intersec 2013 are extremely wide ranging, says Davies, covering everything from integrated systems to access control, CCTV and intruder alarm technology and switch mode power supplies: “ Conveniently, many of these will be clustered around the BSIA-organised UK Security Pavilion.” In addition to having a presence on the UK Security Pavilion, Davies confirms that the Export Council has again been working closely with UKTI (UK Trade and Investment) to run a ‘Meet the Buyers’ event: “Over the years this has proved to be an extremely productive way of bringing suppliers and prospective customers, who have specific project requirements in mind, together for face-to-face discussions.” Middle East Matters The importance of the Middle East for British security providers cannot be overestimated. According to Davies, the strength of this trade was brought into sharp focus recently when the Export Council undertook a detailed ‘State of the Nation’ research effort. This questioned members about their experiences exporting in 2012 as well as their expectations for 2013: “There were a number of results from this which are directly related to the Middle East. Our research found, for example, that the Middle East is currently the most important overseas target market for BSIA members. This was also reflected in the fact that almost 70% of respondents are keen to increase their business in the Middle East during 2013. Alongside this Intersec was singled out as one of the most popular overseas trade shows – alongside MIPS in Russia – that BSIA members attend.” At a wider level, as the economic outlook remains problematic in the UK, it is understandable that more and more British security businesses are seeking to open up opportunities in overseas markets: “The ‘State of the Nation’ research highlighted, interestingly, that 85% of respondents felt that the ongoing slowdown at home made exporting even more important. For Export Council members sales outside the UK now represent a significant, and growing, proportion of business, with the survey finding that, in the majority of cases, this accounts for between 40 and 70% of their turnover. Encouragingly, two-thirds also reported that the level of this business had increased over the past 12 months,” says Davies. Ready for 2013 Considering the prospects for Intersec 2013, Davies is hopeful that, ultimately, it will prove to be even more successful than in 2012: “Last year is certainly going to be a hard act to follow as we saw an unprecedented level of visitor interest. To quantify this, in a post-event survey, 83% of our Export Council members said they had witnessed a growth in visitors coming to their stands. Moving ahead we are confident of another positive outcome given the number of members, and quality of solutions, confirmed for the show.” For more information regarding the BSIA’s Export Council please visit Hall S2, Stand S2-531C during Intersec 2013. Alternatively, further details and a full list of member companies can be found at: www.bsia.co.uk/export-council.

Elmdene has focus on switch mode power for Intersec 2013

Innovative electronic security and fire products manufacturer, Elmdene International Limited – a subsidiary of Potter Signal, LLC – will be showcasing its latest industry-leading solutions on stand 625C in hall S2 at Intersec 2013, including highly efficient and reliable Power Supply Units (PSUs) – based around switch mode technology, a cost effective in-line UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), Power over Ethernet (PoE) standby PSU devices, plus sounders and IR exit buttons for access control. Elmdene is once again exhibiting as part of the UK Pavilion at Intersec 2013, alongside other members of the Export Council of the BSIA (British Security Industry Association). The event will also provide the ideal platform for the company to outline its ambitious plans to double business in the region over the coming year. The wide range of switch mode PSUs that Elmdene is to display at Intersec 2013 reflects the growing take-up of these solutions in preference to more traditional linear power supplies. According to Elmdene switch mode units offer a higher level of efficiency (80-87%), lower energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint. In addition, the fact that they run significantly cooler than established linear designs makes them less susceptible to failing under high temperatures – a key consideration for the company’s customers in the Middle East. Beyond this, operating between 90V and 260V, they can readily absorb fluctuations in electrical supply. Other innovations Elmdene is seeking to showcase on-stand at Intersec 2013 include the UPS12-2000, a compact and cost effective in-line UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), designed to back-up 12 V dc devices, up to 10W (800mA), such as CCTV cameras and door locks. The company will also be spotlighting new standby power supplies to provide back-up for Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices across critical security, access control and IT applications. Crucially, Elmdene is able to offer solutions which meet the latest European and, through its association with Potter Signal, LLC, American standards so products can be provided which tie-in with the preferences of specific customers. Said Ian Moore, Managing Director at Elmdene International Limited: “We are anticipating a dramatic increase in the business we do in the region during 2013, with our switch mode PSUs very much at the forefront of our sales drive which kicks-off at Intersec. With this in mind we will be announcing our intention to extend Elmdene’s presence on the ground with a strong focus on the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) area. We already hold significant stocks of PSUs and other product lines in Jebel Ali, UAE, and further investment will allow a faster response – and technical support – in the same time zone as our customers.” For more information on Elmdene and its products please visit stand 625C in Hall S2 at Intersec 2013 in Dubai or log on to www.elmdene.co.uk. Elmdene also has a YouTube Channel which can be found at www.youtube.com/user/ElmdeneInternational and a Twitter account:@ElmdeneIntLtd.
