Aperio™ uses wireless communication (IEEE 802.15.4) between the lock and an Aperio™ hub to provide real-time communication to the access control system. This simplifies installation, reducing costs and complexity compared to traditional access control. With real-time authentication and alarms, Aperio™ uses AES 128-bit wireless encryption. ASIS UK appointed as second licensee for the Register of Chartered Security Professionals

The UK Chapter of ASIS – the worldwide security organisation – has become the second licensee for the Register of Chartered Security Professionals in the UK. With effect from 1st February those who want to demonstrate they have achieved the highest possible standards in security professionalism can now apply to be admitted to the Register via ASIS UK. Until now the only application route was via the Security Institute, but this development will see applications to become Chartered Security Professionals and listed on the Register – using CSyP as a designation – being welcomed by ASIS UK. The existing Registrar, David Gill CSyP, will continue to be responsible for admitting new applicants on behalf of both organisations, thus maintaining standards – a vital element and core to the success of the Register. The decision to appointing ASIS UK was ratified by the Registration Authority of Chartered Security Professionals in November 2012, led by Lord Alex Carlile CBE QC, and including Don Randall MBE and Peter French MBE representing the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals. In commenting on this development, Lord Carlile said “This is a significant milestone in the development of professionalism in the UK and should not be under-estimated. Not only is there now a second organisation promoting and attracting applications from suitably experienced security managers, but the link that has been developed by the Security Institute and ASIS UK Chapter 208 working together for the benefit of the profession, is significant. ” Welcoming the appointment of ASIS UK, Mike Bluestone CSyP, Chairman of the Security Institute, said “I am delighted to welcome ASIS UK as the second Licensee for the Register of Chartered Security Professionals. This is absolutely the right thing for the UK security profession, and I look forward to seeing the impact of further CSyPs being recognised, and a wider understanding of this gold standard in professionalism. We share many members with ASIS UK, and the more we can work together for the benefit of them, and the sector generally, the better for everyone.” Mike Alexander BEM, Chairman of ASIS UK and the first applicant under the new license, said “The UK Chapter and its membership are energized by this decision and we thank the Worshipful Company and the Security Institute for their agreement to allow us to become a second licensee. ASIS has always supported and encouraged the raising of standards and professionalization of the security industry and welcome the opportunity to offer our members the structured pathway to become a Chartered Security Professional.” Presentation of certificates to new ASIS UK Registrants will take place at a celebratory dinner to be hosted by Lord Carlile at the House of Lords on Friday 22nd March. It is hoped this event, which is kindly being sponsored by Kings Security Systems and PD Ports, will attract interest from outside the security sector, helping to raise awareness of the benefits of appointing Chartered Security Professionals. Further details of the dinner can be obtained from the Security Institute. Contact www.CSyP-register.org

Free guidance on access control released as demand for retail security grows

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has recently released a free guide to aid the retail sector in understanding the benefits of access control security systems. The retail sector faces a number of security threats year round, from shoplifting to organised crime, and these risks are increased by the heavy footfall brought on by mid-season sales. “The benefits of access control systems in this sector are vast” explains Mike Sussman, Chairman of the BSIA’s Access Control Section. “Retail environments have a number of factors to consider when securing their premises – including valuable stock, cash and a number of employees working varied shift patterns. Access control systems can provide reliable and cost effective solutions to ensure that these goods and people are kept secure.” In 2012, the BSIA surveyed its members to discover their involvement in securing the retail industry over the past year. This research identified some interesting trends. Over 85% of respondents said that the use of private security measures within the retail sector had either remained static or increased over the previous 12 months. Interestingly, 65% of respondents also believed that a further increase was to be expected this year. In light of these results, this new guide serves to highlight how influential access control systems can be in managing known or anticipated threats within retail environments. Such systems can also be used to monitor and manage the areas of a premises that personnel can access, and since the BSIA’s survey found theft by employees to be a very real threat to the retail industry, these systems can also offer peace of mind to store managers. In fact, access control can provide a variety of benefits including time and attendance management, fire roll call technology and when integrated with other security systems, such as CCTV, can ensure maximum protection of a premises. To put these benefits into perspective, this helpful guide also incorporates a number of case studies from member companies within the BSIA’s Access Control Section who have had direct experience within the retail industry. Mike adds: “Members of the access control section have a wealth of experience in securing a wide range of industries, and having been inspected to high quality British and European standards, there is no question that we represent the best of the industry.” The guide can be downloaded free of charge from the BSIA’s website. Bristol Airport implements Critical Point protection solution from Navtech

Navtech Radar, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of commercial millimetre wave intelligent radar solutions for outdoor commercial applications, have completed the installation of their AdvanceGuard Radar solution with witness2 intelligent software for processing and control at Bristol Airport. The new solution covers surveillance and monitoring of a Critical Point (CP) within the airport where barriers would not be practical, and where CCTV in combination with manned guarding did not provide a satisfactory response time. Chris Ware, Head of Security at Bristol Airport says, “We selected AdvanceGuard based on its all-weather capabilities and operational experience at other airports. A further major factor was that the solution demonstrated the lowest false alarm rate which was demonstrated during testing. We have a lot of fog in Bristol and it was critical that the new solution could cope with that, as well as rain and snow. The AdvanceGuard solution also gives us superior track and trace capability in comparison to other types of technology solutions we looked at. To date, the system has met all our expectations.  I would like to highlight that the benefits also include automatic tracking capability and rule-and zone setting flexibility within the witness2 software suite. The system’s alarm log and operator acknowledgement features also provide an audit trail for both employer and employee. Hence, staff can be seen to have followed procedures because there is now a security system in place that documents that they have done so.” To provide coverage of the CP and its approaches, Navtech specified a compact, high-performance, 360°scanning radar sensor – the AdvanceGuard AGS800-X. This unit will scan a full 360° every second to a radius of 600m with a resolution of 25-50cm and is capable of detecting vehicles, humans and animals in all weather conditions. The AGS800-X is housed in a lightweight, IP67-compliant enclosure and features an industry-standard interface for easy integration and use as part of a multi-radar solution. Bristol Airport established a warning area around the unsecured CP designed so that any encroachment by potential intruders results in an alert being received by the operators. All potential threats within the warning area are displayed on the Sentinel user interface and are updated in real-time. Running on top of this, is a sophisticated set of direction rules, complete with geo-fenced alarm zones, which allows witness2 to generate alerts only when a threat moves into the CP from particular directions. For visual identification in case of incidents, the AdvanceGuard solution is integrated with the existing CCTV solution at Bristol airport directing an Esprit TI thermal imaging camera supplied by Pelco – part of the Schneider Electric group. The Esprit TI camera’s thermal capabilities are ideal for the prevailing conditions at Bristol Airport, and is capable of tracking any identified threat using bearing and range instructions provided by witness2.
