Security Management and risk in the UAE

Rebecca Spayne, Managing Editor of Security Buyer looks at effective security management in commercial environments, comprehensive risk assessment and response strategies  Effective security management in commercial environments is crucial for safeguarding assets, ensuring employee and visitor safety, and maintaining operational continuity. This article provides a detailed examination of best practices in risk assessment and response strategies, emphasising the importance of an integrated approach. Additionally, it highlights specific security solutions from leading manufacturers that enhance these practices.  Comprehensive Threat Analysis  Understanding the potential threats to a commercial environment is the first step in effective security management. Threat analysis involves identifying both internal and external sources of potential security breaches. Internal threats can include employee theft, fraud, or misconduct, while external threats might involve burglary, vandalism, or cyber-attacks. Environmental hazards, such as natural disasters or accidental fires, must also be considered.  A thorough threat analysis requires a multi-faceted approach. This includes reviewing historical data on security incidents, consulting with security experts, and staying updated on emerging threats. According to a report by Mordor Intelligence, the Middle East commercial security market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2% from 2023 to 2028. This growth is driven by increased investment in security technologies and infrastructure, highlighting the importance of a robust threat analysis in anticipating and mitigating these threats.  Regular Vulnerability Assessments  Conducting regular vulnerability assessments is essential for identifying weaknesses in the security infrastructure. These assessments should evaluate physical security measures, such as access control systems and surveillance equipment, as well as cybersecurity protocols.  Physical security assessments might involve checking the integrity of locks, gates, and barriers, ensuring that surveillance cameras are positioned correctly and functioning properly, and verifying that alarm systems are operational. Cybersecurity assessments should focus on identifying vulnerabilities in the network infrastructure, such as outdated software, weak passwords, and insufficient encryption. A survey by IBM found that the average cost of a data breach in the Middle East was $6.53 million in 2023, emphasising the critical need for regular vulnerability assessments to prevent such costly incidents.  Risk Prioritisation  Once threats and vulnerabilities have been identified, it is important to prioritise them based on their potential impact and likelihood of occurrence. This process involves assessing the severity of each threat, considering factors such as the potential for loss of life, financial impact, and damage to the organisation’s reputation.  By prioritising risks, security managers can allocate resources more effectively, focusing on the most significant threats. This approach ensures that critical vulnerabilities are addressed promptly, reducing the overall risk to the organisation. The 2023 Global Risk Report by the World Economic Forum highlights that cyberattacks on critical infrastructure and the potential for geopolitical instability are among the top risks faced by organisations today, underscoring the importance of risk prioritisation in security management.  Scenario Planning  Developing and simulating different threat scenarios is a key component of effective risk management. Scenario planning involves creating detailed plans for responding to various types of security incidents, from minor breaches to major emergencies.  Scenario planning should include both tabletop exercises and full-scale drills. Tabletop exercises involve discussing hypothetical scenarios in a controlled environment, allowing team members to explore different response options and identify potential weaknesses. Full-scale drills simulate real-world incidents, providing an opportunity to test the response plan under realistic conditions. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in the United States suggests that regular drills can improve response times by up to 40%, highlighting their effectiveness in preparing for actual incidents.  Incident Response Planning  A detailed incident response plan is essential for managing security incidents effectively. This plan should outline specific actions to be taken in the event of different types of security breaches, including communication protocols, roles and responsibilities, and recovery procedures.  The incident response plan should be based on the results of the threat analysis, vulnerability assessments, and scenario planning. It should include clear instructions for notifying relevant authorities, securing the affected area, and conducting a thorough investigation.  Communication is a critical component of incident response. The plan should include procedures for notifying employees, customers, and other stakeholders about the incident, as well as guidelines for interacting with the media. Clear and timely communication helps to maintain trust and minimise confusion during a security incident. According to a study by the Ponemon Institute, organisations with an effective incident response plan reduce the cost of a data breach by an average of $2 million…. Firewatch

FireWatch Solutions’ Security guard services

FireWatch Solutions, Inc., a premier risk management organisation offering custom protective solutions to clients around the globe, reports strong growth after expanding its offerings to include armed and unarmed guard services. FireWatch offers a suite of services to clients under its licenses in the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Washington state. “We’re thrilled to be able to expand our services and meet the demand for security at venues such as sensitive technology facilities, corporate offices, housing associations, luxury hotels, and city events,” said Brian von Kraus, FireWatch CEO. “There is continual need to reduce risk and liability; our team of highly experienced professionals deliver results in a system that is custom tailored to each client’s unique requirements. FireWatch’s private security agency connections provide access to highly trained, fully certified security guards from the military and law enforcement communities. No matter the environment – from a city-wide special event or a commercial setting with broader needs – guards can serve as short-term security or provide ongoing protection. Among FireWatch’s commercial services are uniformed officers, patrolling services, video surveillance, 24-hour monitoring, and risk assessments. A key differentiator for FireWatch is its operations centre which serves as a watch desk connected to all security guards. The centre facilitates communications and reporting with guards and is connected to a broad range of outside security agencies including fire, police, and other law enforcement and security entities. The value-added operations centre fosters greater communications, increases service capability, and is a morale booster for guards who view themselves as part of team even on the most traditional one-man assignments. Another differentiator for FireWatch is the high level of training afforded all its security team. Training goes beyond the basic standards, according to von Kraus. Security guards meet all state certification requirements for security skills and knowledge including firearms. The FireWatch security guard team includes military veterans and current and former law enforcement personnel. FireWatch plans to expand its Operations Center to include backup monitoring services for personal and business security alarms. The company is also looking to start up operations in Texas and Oklahoma in the near future. FireWatch Solutions Inc., founded in 2016 by von Kraus, provides tailored security services to support each client’s unique requirements. Initially focused on supporting non-government organisations (NGOs) working in high-risk locations overseas, the company has expanded domestically to provide traditional security services to include executive protection, event security, estate security, and other guard services. The company is currently operating in California, Arizona, Washington, and Texas, with planned expansion to Nevada in Q3 2023. Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here. That is why education must be available to everyone all over the world. I’m glad that we have been able to partner with Acronis and are now working together towards this goal.” The success of the Acronis Cyber Foundation has been achieved thanks to the help of Acronis’ service provider partners, including GoDaddy, CloudFest, RNT Rausch, Zebra Systems, Climb Channel Solutions, BusyMouse, Ubistor, and many more. 2023 OSPAs Thought Leadership Summit programme announced

The fifth Security Thought Leadership Summit organised by the Outstanding Security Performance Awards (OSPAs) in association with the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) is returning to the Royal Lancaster London on Thursday 23rd February 2023. The event is firmly established in the security calendar as one that provides a platform to debate, confront and challenge the many issues that face the sector. This year’s programme is packed with hot topics covering a wide range of subjects relevant to the whole industry; all security leaders are encouraged to attend and contribute to help shape the future of the security sector. To secure your place don’t delay in booking as the event was a sell-out last year. 2023 THOUGHT LEADERSHIP SUMMIT PROGRAMME: Third Party Certification – Delivering Buyer Confidence Richard Jenkins – Chief Executive, National Security Inspectorate (NSI) Public and private sector collaboration: what are the barriers and opportunities? David Ward – Director, DW Associates There is so much discussion, at almost every conference, about the merits of the public and private sector working together. Sometimes it is presented as an unqualified good. In reality competing ideologies – not least the profit motive of the private sector versus the service motive of the public sector – and different perspectives on priorities; collaboration is seen as a bigger deal by the private sector and are amongst the issues that thwart progress. In this presentation the realities are discussed with a real example (tackling terrorism in the City), looking not just at what worked but what were the problems and how were they overcome? In short, what lessons can be learnt and by whom? What do insurers think of the security sector? Mark Dunham – Chair of RISCAuthority, Head of Technical Underwriting at AVIVA Insurers are important players when it comes to engaging with clients on security matters. In some ways insurers play a key role in driving interest in security and encouraging better provision. But what do insurers think of the security sector? Do insurers trust private security? Do they view the security sector as a major partner in reducing risks? Do they value what security offers? What do they see as the gaps and how can these be filled? How important is the pending Protect Duty now and going forward, and what are insurers expecting of security? Developing security industry capability: what is happening? Amanda Gentle – Senior Manager (Strategy and Scheme Delivery), Security Industry Authority (SIA) How do we know good professional development in security from bad? How doable is it to develop a universal frame of reference for skills? Where can someone go to find the very best security industry career advice?  What needs to happen to ensure private security can become a career of choice? These are important questions and in this presentation the SIA will discuss its work with the Skills Board and others to professionalise the industry. Purchasing good security: what are the modern drivers for buying decisions? Clare Rogers – Senior Operations Manager (Services), National Security Inspectorate (NSI) Joanne Kenny – Commercial Lead, Crown Commercial Service Mike Reddington – CEO, British Security Industry Association (BSIA) The effective procurement of security services has long been undermined by a perception that buyers are primarily focussed on cost rather than value, are under appreciative, or unaware of the risks associated with low-cost solutions, and the benefits associated with value driven services.  Yet there are new pressures now and new frameworks too. For example, the Crown Commercial Service requires 10% of the value of a contract to be focussed on social value themes. Sustainability and the green agenda are driving a focus in some areas or are perceived to be. Buyers will be aware of Martyn’s Law and may soon find they are required to adhere to specific responsibilities for publicly accessible locations, and the safety of people using them. They will want to know service providers are up to the mark, yet it’s not clear how they will ensure this. Embedding duties into codes of practice and standards could aid buyers. Many believe legislation is required to force a change in behaviour both amongst the emergency services and the private security sector. Is legislation necessary to drive more secure environments, and best practice in purchasing and security delivery? What will drive purchasing behaviours that serve public safety? What would improve the security sector’s image?: what the bosses say Sarah Jane Cork – Managing Director, Bidvest Noonan Peter Harrison – Managing Director, FGH Security This popular session from last year has been included again with a different focus. We have invited bosses to talk about the challenges they face, and those they feel the sector faces in improving the security sector and the environment in which it operates. What do they see as the main obstacles to progress, and how might these be overcome? What needs to change and how? Reflecting on my route to conducting terrorist activities: questions and answers Frank Portinari – Former offender In this presentation a former offender talks about his journey into terrorism. It started with fighting rival fans on the terraces, then football hooliganism developed into extremism, and then into terrorist activities. Along the way there were many opportunities to prevent the slide into crime, why were they not taken? In this talk Frank will address some of these issues and answer audience questions on preventing radicalisation. Doors open to the event at 11:30 am. There will be an exhibition of security products and services, lunch will be provided, and the event will end around 17:00. To read more news and exclusive features see our latest issue here. IDIS

IDIS expands line up with 8-channel HD encoder

IDIS, the manufacturer of trusted South Korean-made video tech, has enhanced its extensive range of video solutions with the launch of a new 8-channel DP-DE2108 HD encoder. Continuing in IDIS’s strategy of focusing on customer needs, this latest device from IDIS digitises various brands of analogue camera signals to provide excellent HD image quality, ensuring that end-users can continue to support legacy cameras, use a mix-and-match analogue and IP approach, or manage phased upgrades to full network surveillance. The DP-DE2108 allows HD analogue, SD analogue, and HD-TVI cameras to be quickly and easily integrated into a DirectIP network solution, delivering high-performance video of up to 5MP when using an HD-TVI signal. In addition, the encoder features four audio inputs, quadruple streaming up to 30ips per channel, and supports OSC control over coaxial cabling. The intelligent features offered by the DP-DE2108 provide many of the benefits of IP without the cost of a complete network conversion. It enables a unified approach to managing analogue or IP cameras from either the license-free IDIS Center VMS or IDIS Solution Suite (ISS), with a modular choice of enterprise-level services. James Min, Managing Director, IDIS Europe, notes that “The release of the DP-DE2108 reflects IDIS’s continued focus on real-world customer needs. Despite the market shift from analogue to network surveillance, we continue to see a steady demand for analogue. Customers want to retain coaxial cabling, particularly in locations like historic buildings, where there is a need to avoid the cost and disruption of civil works.” In addition, this new 8-channel encoder will be a valuable option for phased migration programs, ensuring continued operation and uninterrupted surveillance with exceptional HD image quality, as system upgrade projects are rolled-out.
