Security Technology Live: Clarion’s new Birmingham event for 2014

Clarion Events, one of the leading players in the global security and defence event market, announce the launch of a new installer and channel facing event, Security Technology Live, which will be held at the NEC, Birmingham in May 2014. Security Technology Live has been developed through extensive consultation with exhibitors, associations and other stakeholders which has identified demand for a national show at which the security industry can support, service and extend its national networks of 3rd party security installers, integrators, resellers and distributors. “We have been working on the idea of a national, overtly channel focused show for the security installer and integrator market for quite some time, to complement the end user focused events in our existing portfolio such as Counter Terror Expo” said Clarion Events Managing Director Tim Porter. “However now that UBM (the organisers of IFSEC) have decided to move the IFSEC event away from its traditional home in the NEC and relocate it London’s ExCeL next year we believe that the time is now absolutely right to bring Security Technology Live to the market in 2014 to fill the gap in the national calendar created by IFSEC’s shift to the south east” Clarion’s portfolio in the security sector includes the biennual DSEI Defence & Security show, as well as Counter Terror Expo (CTX) which has been growing strongly and delivering a substantial audience of  high-end private and public sector CNI and integrated security buyers to London’s Olympia since its launch 5 years ago. “London is a great location for our CTX event, which delivers an audience of high end corporate, government, policing and security sector visitors. Everyone we have spoken to across the industry however agrees that the NEC is the best location for a show aimed at the domestic and commercial security installer and integrator community” said Porter . Security Technology Live will be held in Halls 6, 7 and 8 at the NEC and will take place over 3 days from 13-15 May 2014 and annually thereafter. Exhibitor pricing will be lower than at recent editions of IFSEC, and the event will benefit from a very clear focus on the UK and European distributor, reseller and installer communities. A key theme for Security Technology Live will be helping the UK installer community as it faces the challenges of adapting to an increasingly sophisticated domestic and commercial security environment, where end users are now requiring and specifying ever-more advanced solutions and technology. Security Technology Live will feature a host of interactive feature areas, together with an extensive free educational programme designed to educate those responsible for installin g and supporting the latest generation of electronic, digital and IP-based integrated solutions as their adoption trickles down to all levels of the market over the next decade and beyond

Met Police signs up to Action Fraud

The Metropolitan Police has joined the national ‘Action Fraud’ scheme that is designed to improve investigations across the UK. Launched by the National Fraud Authority, the government agency, and run in association with the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB), ‘Action Fraud’ reports, collates and investigates referrals. The Metropolitan Police is the latest force to join the scheme, which sees every allegation reported to ‘Action Fraud’ given a reference number to assist the NFIB develop its intelligence into fraudsters, while also enabling better fraud prevention and education. Detective Superintendent Dave Clark, the director of the NFIB, claims ‘Action Fraud’ can help to “shine a light” on the criminal act of fraud and the addition of the Metropolitan Police is a “crucial addition” to the scheme. The inclusion of the Metropolitan Police further extends the network of intelligence gathered by ‘Action Fraud’, which includes information from government departments, financial institutions and large organisations, and information will be sent to other police forces when there is actionable intelligence to pursue. D/Supt Clark said: “From now on fraud reports from across London will be fed directly into Action Fraud and from there into the NFIB, where they will be analysed and used to pin point repeat and significant offenders and lead police officers directly to the fraudster’s front door. “The reports will also help shape the wider intelligence picture that is identifying emerging threats and making the UK more resistant to the threat posed by fraud.”

BSIA outlines access control benefits to retailers

A new guide to the benefits of access control security systems in the retail sector has been launched by the British Security Industry Association (BSIA). Recent research from the organisation found 85% of members had continued with or improved their private security measures in 2012, with 65% predicting a further increase in retail security over the coming 12 months. The new free guide from the BSIA identifies how access control systems can help retail businesses to manage the constant threats from shoplifting or organised crime – which can increase when mid-season sales brings in higher footfall. Included within the guide are case studies showcasing how retailers can utilise access control technologies within time and attendance management and fire roll call technology, while also integrating the solutions with other security systems. Mike Sussman, chairman of the BSIA’s Access Control Section, said utilising access control security systems offer a “vast” number of benefits to the retail sector. “Retail environments have a number of factors to consider when securing their premises – including valuable stock, cash and a number of employees working varied shift patterns,” he stated. “Access control systems can provide reliable and cost effective solutions to ensure that these goods and people are kept secure.”

Ensygnia enters Mobile World Congress Dragon’s Den

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this month, UK-based start-up Ensygnia will be one of just six companies competing to be chosen as the mobile innovation with the most potential impact. Ensygnia will present and demonstrate its patented OneScan solution for log-in, registration and payments to conference delegates and a panel of investors in the Next Generation Mobile Innovation session – traditionally one of the best attended sessions of the conference. The delegates vote at the end of the session for the innovation they believe will have the most impact over the next ten years. CEO Richard H Harris, who will be making the company’s “Dragon’s Den” style pitch, said today that the worldwide potential of the Ensygnia platform and the OneScan mobile solution made the Mobile World Congress the perfect stage to showcase the innovation. “With our OneScan app users will be able to make a payment, log-on to a corporate VPN, register with a cloud-based service or access their personal bank account with just one scan,” he explained. “Our process is simple, fast and secure, and puts an end to the nightmare of an ever-increasingly complex set of user names and passwords or the need to go through additional levels of security and use bank-distributed devices.” The service is provided using a patented process running on the Ensygnia platform. The platform acts as a personal information exchange to transfer data stored by users of the OneScan App. The data held on the platform is encrypted and its security maintained throughout any transaction. “OneScan simplifies online shopping,” said Harris. “Retailers simply present an Ensygnia encrypted QR code alongside the product or at the check-out page. By scanning the onscreen code with the OneScan App on their smartphone, shoppers trigger a transaction using their stored information. “No more registering or entering financial details onto a website,” Harris added. “Just search for a product, select it, and scan it. That’s it.” Ensygnia and Onescan can also use stored personal data or credentials to log-on to a corporate network, or to access a cloud-based business service such as Linked-In, Salesforce.com or Microsoft 365. Consumers too could use OneScan to access social media sites and networks to protect themselves from personal data hacking. Harris is predicting a bright future for Ensygnia and OneScan and hopes the audience in Barcelona agree. “I hope they can see that we have created a powerful underlying technology engine with many potential applications,” he said. “But in particular,” Harris added, “I hope they see the potential we have to revolutionise the way people pay for goods and services, both online and in store, and that we can help create a universal mobile wallet that is simpler, faster, and more secure than anything on the market today.”

icomply India comments on soaring demand for CCTV

In their recent article, SecurityNewsDesk reported on the findings of research carried out by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).  Demand for CCTV is soaring in India, after a number of high profile attacks on public safety across the country.  The association conducted a survey among 200 security professionals from metropolitan cities, where public and private surveillance could make a significant impact to reduce levels of crime.  We’ve asked icomply India’s Mairaj Tyagi for his opinion on the report below. Future of CCTV in India According to analysis by ASSOCHAM, the video surveillance and CCTV market in India is growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 30%.  “Rapid economic growth and rising industrial activities amid security threats, fear of potential terrorist attacks has fuelled the demand for CCTV cameras evidently as government authorities and even private sector are investing huge amount of money in installing CCTVs to secure their offices and public places across the country,” said D S Rawat, secretary general of ASSOCHAM. Mairaj Tyagi, Technical Sales Engineer at icomply India, believes that the growth of the CCTV and surveillance market can be traced back to the 2008 Mumbai terrorism, where 166 people died after 12 co-ordinated shooting and bombing attacks.  “Before the attacks, no-one was taking an interest in the field of security.  But in the aftermath, attitudes changed and now everyone is serious about protecting people’s public safety in India.  CCTV has a bright future, not only in India, but the whole of Asia.” Government Influence The ASSOCHAM report cited lack of government support and an absence of regulatory framework as two key reasons for holding back the growth of domestic CCTV manufacturers in India.  “I am certain that the government will provide more support and regulations for companies providing CCTV systems and hardware in the future”, commented Mairaj.  “There was a recent announcement by New Delhi police that shortly the whole city will be under surveillance by CCTV, monitored from a central control room.  As the Government is taking public safety more seriously, no doubt the scope of the CCTV industry will increase dramatically.” “I expect the private sector to grow more rapidly than the public sector,” continued Mairaj.  “The Indian government has limited sources of opportunities, whereas private enterprise resources are very extensive.  Many new companies are now manufacturing, installing and integrating CCTV, so multi-national companies will start reducing product costs because of competition in the market.  The industry will grow and keep on growing in the coming years.” Integrated systems ASSOCHAM describes CCTV as ‘the most sought-after security system.’  The ease with which different monitoring systems can be connected with police stations and defence headquarters, whilst providing real-time streaming of CCTV, makes surveillance a prominent and feasible security solution. Mairaj points out how icomply can help with problems in inter-connectivity.  “In India, V-TAS Pro is unique because no other software can integrate different brands.  It means that clients can use a number of different hardware manufacturers, along with incident reporting and back-office information management software, to create a cost-effective and functional control room.” If you’d like more information about icomply India, please get in touch.
