Milestone software secures renewable energy production

Milestone software secures renewable energy production; incidents reduced by 96 percent Losses and damages to TerniEnergia’s photovoltaic power stations has reduced by 96 percent after a Milestone-based VMS solution was implemented. These very large production facilities are nearly impossible to secure by traditional means, but with Milestone XProtect uninterrupted power services are ensured and TerniEnergia can expand the solution as needed. The Challenge: TerniEnergia experienced several thefts at their photovoltaic power stations. These installations that can span many square kilometres, are very difficult to protect using guards or passive security. Without an efficient surveillance system thieves could enter the large and remotely located production facilities unseen. TerniEnergia experienced quite a bit of damage due to the thefts. Thieves would for example cut energy cables or steal solar panels which led to increased expenses for TerniEnergia who had to restore the property and pay penalties due to electrical service interruptions. A better solution was needed in order to protect the power stations and ensure a stable energy production. The Solution: iGreenPatrol, a private security institute owned by Terni Energia, installed Milestone XProtect® Corporate to manage 290 Sony cameras. All power stations are monitored from a central monitoring station where XProtect® Smart Wall shows all the stations at once on a 50’’ video wall, giving the operators a full overview of the huge facilities. An anti-intrusion alarm system, TechnoAware video-analysis software, an energy cables protection system and a photovoltaic panel protection system have been integrated into Milestone XProtect Corporate. These integrations are made possible by the open platform technology that XProtect is based on. The Advantages: The number of thefts and damages to the photovoltaic power stations has reduced by 96 percent compared to previous years. The result is a stable and reliable energy production saving TerniEnergia from costs associated with fallout in the production. All the integrated systems are connected to the XProtect Smart Client interface that reports all alarms on a map. This helps the operators to quickly read a situation and make a decision in case of an incident and call local police if necessary. The open platform ensures that the system will be able to cover both current and future needs because it can easily be scaled and integrated into third-party systems. The Milestone solution is also used to monitor that safety procedures are being followed to prevent any accidents from happening. TerniEnergia TerniEnergia is an Italian energy company that works in the field of waste management, energy efficiency and renewable energy. Among other things they produce energy from natural gas, solar energy and biomass. TerniEnergia also owns iGreenPatrol, a private security institute, that with Milestone XProtect software installed at their central command center manages the security of more than 120 photovoltaic power stations 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Thefts and damages reduced by 96 percent TerniEnergia has many photovoltaic power stations in various parts of the world and the number keeps growing. While the stations are located in remote areas, valuable material is located onsite, especially during construction. The power stations cover a huge area, making it almost impossible to keep a full overview with the help of patrolling security officers alone. Thieves can easily go unnoticed by for example hiding under the large solar panels. TerniEnergia needed a solution to efficiently protect their photovoltaic power stations from damage and theft. Damage to the power stations results in increased expenses from having to restore the property, in addition to the penalties received due to electrical service interruptions. Thus, constant monitoring of the power stations are necessary. TerniEnergia needed a cost-efficient centralised solution where all power stations can be monitored at once. Moreover, the solution needed to be scalable to accommodate the increasing demand for renewable energy. TerniEnergia’s previous system did not allow for centralisation and could not easily be scaled. The new system, Milestone XProtect® Corporate video management system, was installed to monitor all photovoltaic production facilities. The security of the power stations has now become streamlined saving both time and money for TerniEnergia. XProtect is built on Milestone’s open platform technology which ensures that the system can easily be scaled up or down according to needs and budget. The customer has the option to pick and choose from a wide variety of cameras and to integrate with third party systems, such as alarms, allowing customisation to a solution that addresses all the customer’s needs. A photovoltaic panel protection system, an energy cable protection system, anti-intrusion alarm and TechnoAware video-analysis software have been fully integrated into Milestone XProtect Corporate, ensuring one unified system that with its functionalities helps the operators make informed decisions within seconds. Because of the open platform technology the system will be able to cover both current and future needs. “Our Milestone solution showed its worth a few days after the project was finalised when there was an attempted theft at one of Ternia Energia’s photovoltaic power stations. The operators at our monitoring station were alerted immediately by the system and contacted the local police who arrested the thief who was in the middle of cutting energy cables. Without the Milestone solution I am not sure we would have caught the thief and especially not in the middle of the misdeed,” says Giuseppe Briotti, Security Administrator at iGreenPatrol. During the first year in operation with Milestone XProtect 25 attempted thefts and damages to the power stations were avoided. As a result, the number of thefts and damage done to TerniEnergia’s photovoltaic power stations reduced by 96 percent compared to previous years, creating considerable ROI for the installation. The previous high number of thefts and damages to the plants created long recovery times which resulted in loss of energy production, and thus, loss of income. Especially, because most of the incidents happened during the summer – the time of year with the biggest potential energy production. With the video management system in place TerniaEnergia has ensured continuity and stability in their operations. Centralised system for optimal security The Milestone IP Video

Transparency is the key to locking sustainability

Transparency is the key to locking sustainability In 2015, ASSA ABLOY announced the publication of over 40 product-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) across a broad spectrum of its security product categories. The list includes mechanical locksets, cylinders, door closers, floor springs, multi-point locks, doors, handles, hinges, and electro-mechanical and other access control solutions. These new publications bring the total number of EPDs issued by the ASSA ABLOY Group to around 100. In a Q&A, EMEA Sustainability Manager Charles Robinson explains the EPDs’ importance to ASSA ABLOY’s sustainability strategy, and how they can help companies to build and run better buildings. Q: Firstly, can you explain what an EPD is? Charles Robinson (CR): An Environmental Product Declaration, or EPD, is a detailed assessment of a product’s impact during its whole life cycle. It’s important to note that an EPD alone isn’t a certification of environmental credentials. Instead, it’s a complete mapping of the product footprint, from raw material, through manufacturing, logistics and impact during use, to end-of-life recycling. Q: Why should an EPD be of interest to your end-users? Because without this kind of detail, it’s impossible to accurately assess a product’s environmental performance. An EPD helps a customer to make an informed choice prior to purchase, or to make an assessment of products already in use. For example, the recent EPD for our SMARTair™ wireless escutcheon details everything from the embodied carbon of the complete product and impact of carton and foam packaging, to the recycling potential of its steel and zinc content, among much, much more. Q: Why does ASSA ABLOY invest time and money in publishing this information? CR: Because sustainability is deeply embedded in our corporate culture, both within our operations and in our product innovation processes. Developing EPDs is another way for us to be open and transparent about our products. It also helps customers to make informed decisions about the security solutions they install. Q: How can we hold an ASSA ABLOY EPD to account? Can they be compared to EPDs published by others, for example? CR: The simple answer is standards. In ASSA ABLOY’s case, our EPDs are based on the ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards, which are recognised internationally, included by all major green building assessment methods like LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method). Using ISO standards to create EPDs ensures environmental performance can be compared fairly across products and manufacturers. Our EPDs are independently researched by a third party, and then verified by the Institut Bauen und Umwelt (IBU) in Germany. Transparency in generating such important data is critical. Q: Why do ASSA ABLOY use product-specific rather than generic, industry EPDs? CR: It comes down to details—and details are crucial when we talk about sustainability. Without data and detail, sustainability is just a buzzword. Products validated by a generic EPD can be manufactured anywhere with a multitude of components, finishes and dimensions etc., so that kind of EPD can only give a loose indication of a product’s environmental impact. They are more like an estimate, based on industry data, than a genuine evaluation of environmental footprint. A product-specific EPD, however, details the precise environmental impact of the product based on a unique bill of materials. Q: How could a customer use an EPD in practice? CR: Armed with a product-specific EPD, building owners and contractors can receive additional credits and as a result achieve higher green building ratings in assessment methods such as LEED. The EPD for our SMARTair™ wireless access control escutcheon, for example, runs to 10 pages of detail aimed at any business genuinely committed to understanding what is in their building, and to reducing its environmental impact. We are proud of our products from a technical point of view, of course. We are also deeply committed to ensuring our solutions help customers to run more sustainable buildings. Protecting customer data and confidentiality is critical

Protecting customer data and confidentiality is critical says Reliance High-Tech Accreditation ISO 27001 demonstrates robust information security management With the risk of potentially catastrophic data breaches now at the top of the corporate agenda Reliance High Tech has again demonstrated its commitment to the highest standards of information security with its latest accreditation to ISO 27001 for the full Reliance Protect operation. The accreditation is one of several demanding quality and information security management benchmarks which the company operates to, demonstrating its commitment to protecting client data and confidentiality. “Organisations are increasingly aware of the serious consequences that can result from data breaches,” says Andy Schofield, Reliance High-Tech’s Director of Technology. “Apart from the direct impact of criminal activity, with stolen data being exploited, failure to protect data adequately can have catastrophic impact on public confidence. It only takes one breach to cause untold damage.” The ISO 27001 standard demonstrates that confidential information is kept secure, that it is managed efficiently and that vulnerabilities are highlighted and addressed. Among other requirements is a duty for all employees to report any potential lapses that they are aware of, from simple bad practice such as leaving passwords visible, to more fundamental systems weaknesses that they spot. “Training and engagement by members of staff at every level is essential to creating a culture where information is seen as important and something that must be protected,” says Andy Schofield. Reliance High Tech not only passed this latest independent assessment first time, remarkably it scored a clean sweep on all metrics, with no areas of concern identified by the assessors. “As security providers we know that we have a great responsibility in handling the sensitive customer information that we have access to. We are aware of the threats to data security and ISO 27001 proves that we have the systems in place to guard against them,” says Terry Sallas Managing Director of Reliance High Tech “The real significance of this achievement is that it embeds the notion of continuous evaluation and improvement in our culture,” Terry Sallas adds. “The effort to achieve the ISO 27001 is high, but going beyond that, we are actively challenging our own data security practices on a daily basis which is why this latest re-assessment was so successful.” [su_button url=”http://www.rht.co.uk/” target=”blank” style=”flat” background=”#df2027″ color=”#ffffff” size=”10″ radius=”0″ icon=”icon: arrow-circle-right”]Click here to find out more about Reliance High-Tech[/su_button]

Key Management at Rotherham Council’s void properties

Key Management at Rotherham Council’s void properties CLIQ Remote has been supplied to Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council’s void properties, by ASSA, part of ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, a UK division of ASSA ABLOY, the global leader in door opening solutions. Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council is the local authority of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. The council wanted to find an effective means of managing access to void council owned homes. One of the problems they faced was the delay caused by passing on keys between the various staff that needed to access the property to prepare it for the next tenant. ASSA worked closely with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council’s facilities management team to explore a solution to improve security and protect the empty buildings assets, while using budgets more efficiently. ASSA’s CLIQ Remote system was selected and installed at the void properties, providing a simple and intelligent electromechanical locking system to allow only those with the necessary authority to obtain access to the private buildings. ASSA’s CLIQ allows high security key management and access control without the complexity and cost of a hard wired or battery driven solution, takes seconds to install on the doors and ensures a low maintenance and flexible system. ASSA’s CLIQ Remote has the functionality to create time defined user keys, allowing access for a specified period of time. This feature is useful for maintenance workers who may need to access properties outside normal opening hours. Dave Richmond Director of Housing, Asset Management and Neighbourhoods at Rotherham Council, said: “We wanted to make sure that people that needed to get access to our properties could do so as quickly as possible. A traditional key approach only added to delays, the CLIQ system speeded up our operations and made sure that we could be confident about the security of our properties. “ASSA’s CLIQ Remote solution has enabled us to have more control over our keys. Now our staff have one single key to access all the properties they need to enter and permissions can be altered at any point.” Simon Wilson, National Sales Manager – CLIQ Remote, at ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, said: “Crimes against empty properties are on the increase, partly due the rising value of metal and thefts of fixtures and fittings. “A copied or lost key is an immediate security threat, and replacing lock cylinders and keys combined with administrative work is highly resource-intensive. ASSA’s CLIQ Remote system helps to minimise administrative work, allowing the administrator to grant access or to block lost or stolen keys remotely and conveniently.” [su_button url=”http://www.assacliq.co.uk” target=”blank” style=”flat” background=”#df2027″ color=”#ffffff” size=”10″ radius=”0″ icon=”icon: arrow-circle-right”]Click here for further information on the full range of CLIQ products from ASSA[/su_button]
