Qognify

Qognify VMS video management with cloud capabilities

Qognify, a provider of video and enterprise incident management solutions, launched its new video management software Qognify VMS. Qognify VMS is designed to meet the specific physical security needs of organisations around the globe. It is based on the proven technology of Qognify’s successful video management software Cayuga, which is used by many customers in thousands of security projects worldwide. As a true next-generation VMS, Qognify VMS combines the powerful core of an enterprise-class VMS with unique added values such as low total costs of ownership, business process support, advanced ecosystem integrations and cloud readiness. One of the key requirements of modern video surveillance systems are flexible deployment options. While many organisations still rely on keeping sensitive data and systems on-premise, others are moving towards a corporate cloud first strategy, which also includes physical security applications. For this reason, Qognify VMS offers the possibility to store video data in the cloud. This enables customers to keep the hardware footprint small, scale storage space quickly and benefit from the advanced resiliency of cloud technology. Steve Shine, CEO of Qognify, explained the company’s cloud strategy: “While cloud-based physical security solutions have been on the rise in small and medium businesses for some time, the adoption rate in enterprise organisations was slower due to more complex system environments and demanding infrastructure requirements. However, rapidly evolving technologies and increasing network bandwidths are beginning to leverage the usage of cloud in this segment. This is why we are now launching Qognify VMS with advanced cloud storage capabilities. At the same time, we are working on further solutions that enable customers to benefit even more from the advantages of cloud technology in the near future. “ On the other hand, to make on-premise deployments as easy as possible for partners and customers, a wide range of turnkey hardware solutions is available for Qognify VMS. The built-to-spec servers minimise the risks in planning, ensure optimal performance, accelerate rollouts and allow for one-stop sourcing. All units come with a comprehensive five-year warranty to protect the investment for years to come. Qognify VMS helps organisations maximise the outcomes of their physical security strategies. One of the key elements to achieve this are its powerful, bi-directional integrations with many other solutions such as access control, intrusion detection and video analytics. But according to Steve Shine, this is only the first step for Qognify VMS to leverage the potential of a physical security ecosystem: “Our goal is to further increase the value for our customers by bringing our physical security and enterprise incident management applications even closer together – for an improved situational understanding and an even faster and more targeted response.“ Compared to Cayuga, Qognify VMS comes with a number of significant improvements, one of them being the optimisation of web technologies used in the product. Carsten Eckstein, Product Owner Qognify VMS, explained “With our decision to make Qognify VMS ready for the cloud, the requirements to process and display web-based content in the product are growing. For this reason, we have decided to fundamentally overhaul a number of technologies such as the built-in browser component, to enable an even more seamless user experience for future integrations.” For EMEA and APAC, Qognify VMS comes in three product packages that reflect the typical requirements of different project profiles. While Qognify VMS Basic covers the needs of smaller and less complex surveillance projects at a very attractive price, the flexible Advanced package is designed for larger and more complex projects. Finally, the Infinity package fulfils all true enterprise requirements and includes a multitude of features at no additional cost. Paxton

Paxton – Celebrating International Women’s Day

As Paxton employees gather to celebrate International Women’s Day, Mechanical Engineer Anisha Gathani discusses her journey into the field, being a STEM Ambassador, and how we can inspire women entering the profession. Figures are rising but there is still more to be done to increase the number of women taking on engineering roles in the UK. According to a study published by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) in Autumn 2021, there are currently 906,785 female engineers in Britain. This makes up just 14.5% of all engineers nationally, compared with 4.6% in 2016. Anisha Gathani, 26, is a Mechanical Design Engineer. She joined Paxton in 2018, after completing a Scholarship with the company during a mechanical engineering bachelor’s, and master’s degree at the universities of Brighton and Sussex. Discussing her education before working at Paxton, Anisha explained “Prior to my studies I did not realise the industry was so male dominated. Only 5% of people on my courses were women, but this has never held me back. “I fell into it at school as I enjoy maths and physics. I come from an all-girl family, and I was the one always fixing things. I love Lego, and that is where it began at an early age. My teachers knew this and encouraged me to investigate engineering as I like putting stuff together and solving problems with clever design.” Paxton is currently hiring people for their Development teams and other departments. They are a global security technology manufacturer that celebrates International Women’s Day every year. This year they have held a working lunch event at their Brighton based headquarters, where employees celebrated the achievement of diversity and inclusivity within their organisation. Anisha said “Paxton celebrating International Women’s Day is an important thing as it provides a platform for women to share their success stories and the challenges they have faced in the workplace. “I find it extremely inspiring listening to colleague’s experiences and words of wisdom. Working for a company who promote equality and encourage positive change, is something which is really important to me.” Paxton is focused on creating an equal and consciously inclusive environment for women. This includes: 6-months of full maternity pay, menopause guidance sessions, world-class onsite facilities, and direction taken year on year to close the gender pay gap. They have trained female mentors and coaches available to support colleagues across the business. Anisha has worked for Paxton for over three years. The team she works with is made up of four talented women that are leading Paxton’s product design. Anisha explained “Being at the beginning of my career, it is great to see it starting to change, with more women managers and colleagues in my industry. It shows me that I can climb the ladder in my field.” “I work with inspiring women engineers at all different levels at Paxton. There are talented senior managers, and we are seeing more and more women join our Development teams. This is both encouraging and inspiring, but there is still work to be done.”   To read more exclusive features and latest news please see our Q1 issue here. Redline

Redline announces computed tomography addition

Redline Assured Security, a globally trusted security solutions provider and part of the Air Partner Services division, is adding Computed Tomography (CT) support to their highly popular cloud-based Threat Image Recognition Training system (TIRT). The combination of Redline’s successful TIRT programme with full X-ray 3D volumetric CT functionality provides the most technically sophisticated and intuitive solution available. The training is specifically designed for the new generation of Standard 3 CT X-ray machines. As technology continues to develop, so too do security threats. Standard 3 is expected to be in force across the European aviation industry by June 2023; subsequently, CT imagery training will be mandatory for airports to remain compliant and secure. Redline has built upon its successful TIRT programme, an add-in to their Security Management Systems (SeMS) product, to create a training solution that covers both standard X-ray and CT X-ray scanning through a single login. TIRT provides seamless transition between the two standards within a single application, supporting training and continuous development of security screeners and ensuring the aviation security industry remains at the forefront of technical innovation and security expertise. TIRT CT’s benefits extend beyond the aviation sector, it is imperative that any venue, organisation, or facility that uses security scanners ensures their staff are up to date on threat image recognition to ensure optimum security. Paul Mason, Managing Director Redline Assured Security said, “Redline’s addition of Computed Tomography to our respected TIRT solution ensures we provide the most technically sophisticated training possible. As the security industry adapts to the ever-changing threat landscape, TIRT CT should be an essential tool in the arsenal of every organisation. Our training solutions provide invaluable exposure to potential threats and intuitive reporting that will greatly aid the aviation industry in the adoption of Standard 3, and particularly CT.” The updated training features realistic threat and prohibited images generated by actual X-ray and X-ray CT machines. The varied threat image library, which is fully EU and UK compliant, covers 6 levels of threat complexity and far exceeds what is currently available across the market in any 6×6 product. This image library is also regularly updated to include recent and emerging threats, enabling operators to keep up-to-date. Live training on X-ray scanning systems is prohibitively expensive, Redline circumvents these costs thanks to its easy digital accessibility. Users can operate and complete training on a computer through just a web browser and an internet connection, allowing for reduced staff downtime and associated costs. This format also allows the training to be easily configured for managers, supervisors and screeners. The application provides a detailed review mode for screeners and supervisors to facilitate analysis of performance and compliance trends at aggregated levels. Additionally, custom focused training programs can be created and assigned when necessary. To read more exclusive features and latest news please see our March issue here. user identity

Questions about protecting user identity

Abrar Siddiqui, Vice President of Engineering at Callsign discusses user identity protection Users have become increasingly frustrated with passwords, they are difficult to remember and we find that we often have to reset them just to transact with organisations. So much so, that 73% of consumers are wondering why they continue to interact with a business when authenticating online is so difficult. A lot of this frustration stems from traditional authentication methods where a pin code is sent to the user via SMS to complete the sign-in process. SMS channels were not designed for authentication purposes and are easily compromised. Analog methods such as passwords were not designed for the digital world, and simply digitising an authentication method creates an inherently flawed authenticator. SMS codes also create unnecessary friction and along with a password doesn’t prove that the person is the authorised individual they claim to be. Fraudsters using stolen credentials looks like the genuine user. Fraudsters are familiar with all these flaws, and without the proper controls in place, they may be just a click away from stealing from an unwitting individual. The UAE has long been attractive for hackers due to the country’s perceived wealth. Around 83% of the UAE companies are seeing an increase in cybercrime attacks through phishing, email spam, malware, etc. However, companies can take steps to protect their business and their customers from fraudsters. To do so, they need to ask themselves and answer a series of questions when looking at the authentication process to make sure that they know who they are interacting with beyond doubt. Is the session secure? This is the first question security leaders should ask themselves, even before looking into a user’s identity. There are instances where scammers use man-in-the-middle attacks to gather information from unsuspecting users through an unsecured website. By tracking unusual traffic, businesses can detect compromised sessions and secure a user’s digital identity before it’s too late. Are you engaging with a real human? Once a session is secure, companies must ask “am I engaging with a real human?” to ensure the user is not a bot. When someone hears “bot” it’s rarely associated with something good. In the past, bots have made headlines by altering consumers’ perception of the media and even competing with humans. Currently, bot use accounts for 64% of Internet traffic, 39% of which is made up of malicious bots that read information and perform malicious activities. These bad bots may be engineered to conduct a reverse brute force attack that utilizes stolen information from a data breach, and forces millions of login and password combinations into the system until a match is found. Instead of relying on a CAPTCHA to confirm whether users are human, companies can use behavioural biometrics to passively determine if someone’s physical interactions with a device align with human characteristics.
