Product spotlight: Enterprise Data Solutions

Steven Jones Business Development Lead (EMEA), Video Surveillance Solutions, Seagate explores the new changes to the EDS Range video surveillance solutions

Seagate is an international company renowned for its high-quality Hard Disk Drives, however with rapid technological developments which have been enhanced further due to the world pandemic the company aims to move into more emerging markets by being a data solution lead company. It would appear to be a natural step in the right direction.

I have detailed below, on how to overcome the challenges in the surveillance sector due to technology advancements, edge analytics and the increased demand for rapid paced developments. As an Enterprise Data Solutions (EDS) expert I will also lead the panel during our Webinar which is scheduled for May 2021.

The launch of the EDS range represents a small but significant change in direction for various markets within video surveillance. As surveillance systems start to scale, there is an obvious requirement for more scalable storage infrastructure for example if the number of cameras in a system grows or an organisation increases the retention period of the data by months or years, the architecture comes under severe strain. With legacy systems, this would create a huge challenge but the technology we use for the EDS portfolio allows the systems to be scaled up to multiple petabyte solutions. EDS is easily scalable, provides a better return on investment, lower total cost of ownership and has a higher feature set.

To seal our expertise, we have earned a number of certifications and verifications in recent months to validate our enterprise solutions with several of the leading VMS vendors, like Milestone Systems. This provides us with even more credibility in the market that we are offering a validated solution which has been tested, certified and verified by some of the leading vendors in the industry.

The EDS portfolio will be available globally for countries which require multi-petabyte storage solutions. The solution is ideal for sectors such as critical infrastructure, retail smart cities, education and many more.

The EDS range is not the only innovation that Seagate is bringing to market at this moment. To meet the demands of data growth and the hunger shown by clients for increased storage capacity, the company has introduced Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR). The technology has received a tremendous response from organisations around the world with thousands of units already having been shipped to large-scale enterprises.

Customers want the highest capacity drives at the lowest costs and this is what HAMR delivers. This new technology will be the bedrock of what takes us forward over the next several years and will significantly increase the capacity of the drives we bring to market.

HAMR uses a new kind of media magnetic technology on each disk that allows data bits to become smaller and more densely packed than ever, while remaining magnetically and thermally stable. Then, to write new data, a small laser diode attached to each recording head momentarily heats a tiny spot on the disk, which enables the recording head to flip the magnetic polarity of a single bit at a time, enabling data to be written. Each bit is heated and cools down in a nanosecond, so the HAMR laser has no impact at all on drive temperature, or on the temperature, stability, or reliability of the media overall.

The effect this is having from a data storage perspective is that it is making the data more complex and it is also increasing the rate that we ingest the data. However, there is no doubt that the Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning analytics within the systems are enabling us to extract significantly more valuable insights from the data that’s being collected

You will be seeing a lot more activity from Seagate.
