What does ‘security’ mean to you?
For me, security means helping our customers to build secure connections between any two endpoints without fear that someone is using their systems that shouldn’t be.

What made you want to work in the industry?
Working in the security industry was an outgrowth of our customers being challenged to build secure connections between their on-premises systems and the public cloud.  They wanted to be able to move workloads back and forth between on-prem and cloud environments. But because they didn’t control the entire security perimeter, they struggled to do this in a secure repeatable way.

If you could change anything in the industry, what would it be?
I would continue to push the industry to collaborate at all levels to defeat the scourge of cyber-attacks.

Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?
I don’t know about funny, but it was certainly stupid. I was recently sitting in my car in the garage, and I was going to run an errand. I got distracted, and I pressed the button in my car which activates the garage door to close and then I preceded to back out and ripped off the top off my bike rack…Pretty dumb.

What’s the most important trend you see today?
I see a nasty trend of nation states engaging third-party “cybersecurity” firms to engage in more blatant cyberattacks. Frankly if that trend continues, I don’t think that’s going to end well for any of us.

If you didn’t work in security, what would you be doing?
Teaching.

What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?
I coached a lot of youth soccer. I had the opportunity to coach both my boys and won a state championship with them.  So yeah, that’s probably the most interesting thing that you wouldn’t see on my CV.

What is one thing you would make compulsory in the office and one thing you would ban?
I would make video games, probably Mario Kart, compulsory – you know anything that would just break it up. It would help the team to have fun and enjoy being together.  I would ban poor work life balance.
