As part of an exclusive series, SHP delves into discussions with leading experts scheduled to present at Anticipate London, a major event bringing together industry insights from the Safety and Health Expo, FIREX, Facilities Show, and IFSEC from 2-4 December 2024. In this feature, we speak to Matt Humby, Senior Technical Consultant at Firechief Global, who is set to address fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.
With recent high-profile incidents, the hazards of lithium-ion batteries are under increasing scrutiny. Humby pointed to a tragic example from South Korea, where a factory fire caused by battery explosions led to the loss of 23 lives. “It highlights the need that we need to take this very seriously,” he reflected, emphasising that robust safety procedures are essential in preventing similar incidents.
This increased attention has even drawn the eye of the insurance industry, which now officially recognises lithium-ion batteries as a significant fire risk rather than an ’emerging’ one. Humby noted, “We are now engaging with insurance companies, and they are now agreeing that this is not an ‘emerging’ fire risk but a fire risk, and have started to implement safety documents which is great.” Firechief, he added, is committed to supporting this shift by working closely with insurers to promote better safety standards.
Yet, regulation still lags behind the pressing demand for safety. Humby voiced his hope for change, specifically through legislative efforts such as the Electrical Safety Bill, which Firechief is actively supporting. “Yes, we are still waiting for change,” he remarked, “but things are starting to happen. I’m hoping that in 2025 we will see improvements, but until then, we will continue to push for education around the topics.”
Looking ahead to Anticipate London, Humby expressed excitement about the opportunity to engage with both new contacts and current clients. “It’s going to be brilliant!” he said. Firechief is set to unveil new products focused on lithium-ion battery safety at an expanded stand, with Humby himself leading discussions on this critical topic.
