Police use giant digital TV to display CCTV image of looting and disorder suspects

Pictures of looting and disorder suspects are being displayed on a large mobile screen around Birmingham. The ‘Digi-Van’, with a six-metre square display unit, is being driven around the city centre showing over 50 CCTV images of the wanted people between 7am and 7pm today, tomorrow and Saturday.

It will stop at in key central locations for shoppers and commuters to get a good look at the photographs in the hope they can help officers identify possible offenders.

“This is the first time a van of this type has been used to display multiple images of people wanted by the police,” says Acting Detective Inspector Mark Rushton.

“We’ve already had a fantastic response to the public who have been calling the special information line or emailing us. We’ve taken over 500 calls which are helping us make arrests.

“Photographs of those wanted by us have appeared in the media but we are determined to use every means available to us to bring suspected offenders to justice.”

The vehicle will be static between 7am and 10am on the nearside of inter city carriageway on Bristol Road, Edgbaston near to Spar. From 10am to 4pm it will be travelling around the city and static High Street City Centre near to Currys and Pavillions Shopping Centre. From 4pm to 7pm it will be static in front of the Monaco building on Bristol Street out of city carriageway.

Anyone who recognises a suspect can ring the freephone number 0800 096 0095 or alternatively the local rate number 0207 158 0125. People can also e-mail: [email protected]
