Johnson Controls ensure that CEM Systems’ access control equipment is compliant with the EU’s new Radio Equipment Directive

Johnson Controls have gone to the lengths required in order to announce that the full range of the CEM Systems access control hardware is now fully compliant with the EU’s new Radio Equipment Directive

Johnson Controls have confirmed that their powerful range of CEM Systems access control hardware is now fully compliant with the European Union’s new Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU, which, on the 13th June 2017, came into full effect.

CEM Systems have many intelligent card readers, which include the CEM S700 reader, CEM S610 (iCLASS SE, DESFire and Prox) reader, and the CEM emerald reader, and now, all of their biometric equivalents are all RED compliant. As a result, they will continue to be available for distribution within the EU. The CEM sPass reader and CEM S3040 portable reader have also been confirmed as being RED compliant.

The former Directive on Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment – otherwise known as the R&TTE Directive – was officially repealed on June the 13th 2016, and from then on, new requirements came into law. Manufacturers across the continent who were previously complaint with the existing legislation had exactly a year to conform to the new ‘RED’ requirements.

The Radio Equipment Directive itself applies to radio equipment being sold in the EU market, and applies to a whole host of products. This includes home monitoring medical devices, navigation or tracking systems, web enabled appliances, and mobile phones to name just a few items. Literally anything which uses the radio spectrum in order to communicate – with the exception of certain items which are specifically excluded in the Directive – falls within the scope of the legislation and must comply. Equipment that doesn’t comply with RED won’t be able to be imported, distributed or represented in EU member states.

In the age of the Internet of Things, an ever increasing amount of devices are both transmitting and receiving data and, in effect, are acting like radio equipment. It’s vital that radio products are “RED” compliant in order to ensure the visibility of devices coming into the market, and to make sure that they don’t present an interference risk to other electrical devices, or a health and safety risk.

CEM Systems access hardware has a legacy of innovation behind it, with numerous industry firsts. These include Power over Ethernet plus (PoE+) door controls, portable handheld card readers, and intelligent card readers with in-built memory.
