Security professionals from 109 countries gathered in Orlando, September 12–15, for the ASIS International 62nd Annual Seminar and Exhibits (ASIS 2016).

The event attracted more than 22,000 registrants, representing 10 per cent growth from the previous year. Keynotes by U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh C. Johnson and FBI Director James B. Comey underscored key conference themes, specifically the rise of lone wolf attacks, the risk of a cyberattack on critical infrastructure, and the need for greater public-private sector collaboration.

Mike Hurst, Director of HJA Recruitment, Vice Chairman of the UK Chapter of ASIS International and member of its European Advisory Council, attended the ASIS conference and to his surprise was called up on stage to receive a President’s Award for Merit for his service as a Volunteer Leader in the UK and Europe. He also collected an award on behalf of the UK Chapter, who received an Honorable Mention for their Newsletter, of which Mike is the Editor.

Mike commented:

“Receiving the President’s Award of Merit was a complete, but very pleasant shock. The ASIS Annual Seminar along with its accompanying exhibition is probably the world’s top security event and this just added to the experience. I was also delighted to accept an Honorable Mention award on behalf of the UK Chapter for our quarterly Newsletter.”

Professor Martin Gill, a criminologist and Director of Perpetuity Research, was also surprised by an award during the conference. A member of both the ASIS International Research Council and the Academic and Training Programs Committee, as well as a Trustee of the ASIS Foundation, Martin received the award for his work over many years in the field of security education, his service of the Board of the ASIS Foundation and the setting up of the OSPAs.

Martin said of the award:

“It is a great honour to be recognised and the ASIS Presidential award was most unexpected. I would like to thank all those I have worked with and for who have made it possible.”

On the event as a whole, ASIS International CEO Peter J. O’Neil, stated:

“I was inspired and energised by the passionate community of security professionals who convened in Orlando last week. While our annual conference delivers unparalleled value in information sharing, networking, and exposure to cutting edge technology, our constituents can rest assured that we are committed to evolving and modernising the event’s content, format, and events to meet the rapidly changing needs of today’s security professionals. We look forward to building on this year’s success in Dallas next September.”
