Ask the expert – Firas Jadalla

Firas Jadalla, Regional Director for the Middle EastTurkey and Africa, Genetec, catches up with Security Buyer to discuss innovation in cloud technology within video surveillance

Genetec is an innovative technology company with a broad solutions portfolio that encompasses security, intelligence and operations. The company’s flagship product, Security Centre, is an open-architecture platform that unifies IP-based video surveillance, access control, automatic license plate recognition (ANPR), communications and analytics. Genetec also develops cloud-based solutions and services designed to improve security and contribute new levels of operational intelligence for governments, enterprises, transport and the communities in which we live. Founded in 1997, and headquartered in Montreal, Canada, Genetec serves its global customers via an extensive network of resellers, integrators, certified channel partners and consultants in over 80 countries.

Security Buyer Editor sits down with Firas Jadalla, Regional Director for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa to find out the evolution of technology in the Genetec solutions portfolio.

How does Genetec ensure innovation in their solutions?

Video Surveillance technologies have developed tremendously over the past few months to enhance public safety and protect cities, enterprises, facilities and communities. One of the most important advancements is the emergence of occupancy management solutions, which have become more important than ever as businesses adhere to social distancing guidelines. These solutions can count people in a physical facility, visualise data, alert staff and provide useful consumer behaviour insights.

Additionally, as cities and organisations prioritise securing data and protecting individual privacy, newer solutions engineered with privacy by design have been introduced. These new solutions involve comprehensive privilege management allowing organisations to restrict user access to their system, automatic anonymisation of video to protect individual privacy and securely collect and manage evidence.

Cloud-based surveillance has seen new developments and cloud-based video monitoring systems that make it easier for users to view video live from anywhere, are secure, scalable and easy to manage. Moreover, advancements in machine learning and rendering technologies have also revolutionised video analytics in surveillance. Innovative solutions can combine unified and third-party analytics technologies to transform video into smart, actionable data. They improve overall security and operational efficiency, so users can learn about their environment and proactively react to any threats.

With the rise of cybersecurity risk, how can organisations better their resilience?

Following a 250% increase in cyberattacks this year, The GCC is making a considerable effort toward economic diversification, with cities becoming smarter and infrastructure increasingly connected. New laws are also emerging intending to impose strict obligations on businesses concerning how, why and when personal data can be collected, used and stored. And the steady expansion in cybersecurity capacity is linked closely to overall economic development.

A robust cybersecurity approach focuses on protecting vulnerable systems from data breaches and malware. It also includes developing systems and processes to ensure cyber resilience.

Resilient systems are designed to limit the impact of cyber threats and unauthorised system access and reduce the time it takes to recover from an accidental or malicious security breach.
