ASSA ABLOY introduces new guide and CPD for construction compliance

With the ‘Golden Thread’ becoming increasingly essential to the construction sector, ASSA ABLOY has launched a new guide and CPD to help clarify its implications for stakeholders throughout the building process and promote its adoption.

The new guide, titled “The ‘Golden Thread’: A Quick Guide”, outlines the concept from the early design stages through to construction and ongoing building management. It details stakeholders’ responsibilities, ensuring they understand how to comply. This guide is complemented by ASSA ABLOY’s new RIBA-approved CPD, which offers industry professionals in-depth education on the subject.

Peter Ashworth, Director & Head of Specification & OEM at ASSA ABLOY, stated: “The ‘Golden Thread’ is here to stay, and those who embrace it will thrive in the construction industry of the future. Our RIBA-accredited CPD, along with the guide, will assist all involved in new build projects to understand their responsibilities, ensuring compliance and safety as outlined in the new Building Safety Act.”

The guide highlights that architects bear specific responsibilities concerning the ‘Golden Thread’, which stems from Dame Judith Hackitt’s ‘Building a Safer Future’ report, written after the Grenfell fire tragedy. These responsibilities include ensuring plans, specifications, and material choices are well-documented and easily accessible, recording regulatory compliance information, and considering the long-term impact of design decisions to maintain the ‘Golden Thread’ post-handover.

The document also introduces Openings Studio™, ASSA ABLOY’s cloud-based BIM plug-in tool for creating, visualising, modifying, and managing door openings. Addressing the challenges of the ‘Golden Thread’, Openings Studio, alongside its user-friendly mobile app, allows architects to contribute directly to the digital record.

Each door logged in Openings Studio is assigned a unique smart tag, which can be attached to the door, providing instant access to details including installation, inspection, and service history. The platform ensures all operational documents, such as technical data sheets and warranty information, are stored centrally and accessible with ease.

Peter added: “The new guidelines require every organisation involved in the design, construction, and maintenance process, including architects, to keep a thorough record of their activities. Openings Studio provides a solution specifically for doors, enabling architects to upload images, documents, specifications, and comments throughout the project. This ensures that there is always evidence of compliance, protecting against the potential repercussions of not meeting the guidelines.”
