Events: An introduction to UK capability

Showcasing the UK’s expertise in providing security for events attracting large numbers of visitors

Launched by the Department for International Trade’s Minister for Exports Graham Stuart MP, ‘Major Event Security: An introduction to UK capability’ is the first in a series of promotional brochures that highlights the UK security sector’s strengths to overseas buyers.

This brochure looks specifically at how industry can help to ensure safety at events including sporting fixtures, concerts and large-scale conferences. It takes a holistic approach, covering capabilities such as screening and detection, command and control systems and physical security considerations, and includes case studies that highlight products and services from the UK’s security sector that can meet these needs.

The Major Events Security brochure also contains summaries from respected industry figures on how the UK’s experience has placed it in a world-leading position, and what steps organisations need to put in place in order to run their events safely. These have been provided by consultant Colin Morgan CSyP, latterly head of Security at Lords Cricket Ground and former head of the Metropolitan Police’s Public Order Branch, and by Chief Constable of the British Transport Police Lucy D’Orsi, previously the Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Protection Command.

Speaking about the new brochure, Mark Goldsack, Director of UK Defence & Security Exports said,

We have been working very closely with our industry partners and across Government to produce a joint view of what UK companies can bring to the table, not just in terms of hard equipment but also our world-class services and training. This brochure, and the ones that follow, represents a compelling offer for our overseas customers, whether we’re talking to a foreign government or to private enterprise.

The Major Events Security brochure is the latest in a series of activities to support  industry, as set out in the Security Export Strategy launched by Secretary of State Rt Hon Liz Truss MP in late 2019. It will be followed by two brochures on border security and supporting first responders in the next few months, with further material on areas including the protection of commercial, residential and critical national infrastructure and transport systems following later in the year.

These brochures represent a uniquely collaborative effort between Government and industry. Secondees from across the sector have been lending their expertise to the development of the documents and there has been an ongoing dialogue with the  trade associations to ensure that they accurately represent the sector’s capabilities.
