Into the Cloud: Brad Small

Our latest Into the Cloud quick fire interview is with Brad Small, Regional Sales Manager, New Zealand and Pacific Islands for Gallagher

What does ‘security’ mean to you?

Keeping people and assets safe.

What made you want to work in the industry?

Short answer… I didn’t, it wasn’t on my radar at all. Long answer… Towards the end of my degree, I coached a Gallagher employee’s child in swimming, and after talking to him about my career ambitions, he connected me with the global security marketing team, who gave me my shot. The industry grabbed me straight away.

If you could change anything in the industry, what would it be?

I’d give the customer total say over what security products they want installed on their site. Too often it comes down to a builder, architect, or integrator choosing a product.

Describe a funny thing that happened to you recently?

My wife – for some reason – pretended to catch a paper towel on fire using a candle in our dining room. She thought I would try and stop her, but instead I said, “you won’t do it, you’re too scared.” Long story short, we now have a burn mark on our dining table, side table and rug from her picking up the flaming tissue, and then dropping it again, and again, in a panic as it burned her fingers…

What three traits define you?

Genuine, innovative and have a good sense of humour.

What’s the most important trend you see today?

Technology is advancing at a scary rate. It is hard to predict what the world might look like in five years’ time, because it’s hard to imagine what the next big ‘thing’ might be.

If you didn’t work in security, what would you be doing?

Tough question. Advertising, maybe?

What’s the most interesting thing about you that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?

I’ve been in quite a few bands over the years, playing a range of instruments.

What is one thing you would make compulsory in the office and one thing you would ban?

Getting out of the office at lunch time compulsory. Then, I’d probably ban reheating fish in the office microwave. Nobody needs to smell that.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

At Gallagher, I really enjoy the company and the people I work with. There is plenty of exciting work for me to get stuck into over the next five years, and beyond.
