International security trade show ISC West – ‘A successful trade show with a clear sense of purpose’

International security trade show, ISC West 2017 has been hailed a ‘major success’ by organisers following another record-breaking final visitor attendance count of 30,000 at the event which took place from 5-7 April, in Las Vegas, USA. Publishing Director Peter Mawson brings you the highlights.

ISC West is a show I don’t travel to every year but given developments in the environment and consequently the wider security market, I wanted to see for myself the industry as it is in North America and beyond.

It was clear as I walked into the exhibition and conference centre that this was going to be a big show and I wasn’t disappointed. There was a sense of purpose in the halls with many providers showcasing new technology and cyber solutions.

There’s a raised awareness to all things cyber in our sector and rightly so as we’ve seen numerous breaches of data through various product types, from cameras to storage devices. And of course with GDPR looming, getting cybersecurity in order is top of the corporate list of things to do. With plenty of forward-thinking players showing their wares, it was good to see those at the top of their game receive recognition.

Thermal Imaging Radar and FST Biometrics stood out particularly for me, but there was no shortage of things ‘new and different’ and plenty of products that were being introduced for the first time.

Drone and counter-drone technology was given its own demo area, which proved to be very popular. Drones are really starting to come into their own within the wider security market and we’re seeing dedicated areas popping up at all the key shows and events around the globe. They offer a very practical way of supporting security systems, but they also clearly bring with them a whole set of regulatory requirements and there will be those that understand the law and those that don’t. It will be interesting to see how this new wave of providers settles into delivering end-user solutions whilst working within clear processes and regulation.

One of the highlights in anti-drone tech was SESP’s “one-of-a-kind UAV jamming solution” called Drone Defeater. According to the brand, it can be seamlessly integrated into any SUV, or used on its own and “floods the skies with blocking waves, rejecting the penetration of any enemy drone”.

Other highlights included launches from Arecont Vision, Allegion, Ipsotek, Silent Sentinel, NVIDIA, and Pivot 3.
ONVIF, who were among the show’s sponsors, were also invited to speak at a series of educational talks hosted by SIA. ONVIF Steering Committee Chair Per Björkdahl and ONVIF Communication Committee Chair Jonathan Lewit gave a lecture on “Using ONVIF for Network Connected Security”, which was very interesting, and very well-attended.

Meanwhile, at the ISC West Awards, Thermal Imaging Radar, featured in this paper’s last issue, scooped two gongs. Its HYDRA Thermal Radar was awarded first place as the Best Surveillance and Advanced Imaging Technology, and the US brand also picked up the Judge’s Choice prize for ‘Best Overall Technology’ at the show.

Wireless CCTV were given the prize in the Video Surveillance Cameras HD (Megapixel) category for its Body Camera Connect, while FST Biometrics scooped the gong for User Authentication, Identification, Credentialing and Management, for its highly impressive MiD Access 4.0 software, which features ‘In Motion Identification’ technology to quickly and accurately identify users at a distance, while they’re in motion.

Security News Desk also got the chance to speak to Vanderbilt Industries President, Mitchell Kane about the company’s latest technology, including its cloud-based access control and video management solution, ACT365, which is said to offer cloud-based access control and integrated video management that allows users to manage their systems from anywhere, at any time and on any device.

But back to the show proper, where Arecont Vision launched SNAPstream™ – a bandwidth reduction technology support for new and existing megapixel cameras, said to greatly reduce the bandwidth and storage requirement for Arecont Vision megapixel cameras.

The company also showcased SurroundVideo Omni G3 Omnidirectional Multi-Sensor Cameras with Remote Setup and MicroBullet, a megapixel camera suitable for use indoors or out, day or night, which the company says is its “smallest and most affordable bullet camera ever”.

Allegion showcased its latest innovations, including the new Schlage LE wireless lock with ENGAGE technology, which it claims is easy to install, connect, manage and use. “It was developed for facilities that want to upgrade to electronic credentials for improved security and efficiency – making the LE lock ideal for interior and perimeter office doors, resident entries, common area doors and sensitive storage spaces with mortise door prep”, the company said. Silent Sentinel featured its full range of thermal and radar security cameras together with the “ever popular, powerful, value-for-money Oculus”. Europe’s largest manufacturer of thermal camera also gave special attention to camera systems deployment and application in a variety of security environments and sectors.

Virtual reality and gaming specialist NVIDIA showed off the latest in artificial intelligence software for smart cities, along with a host of products from its partners, including deep learning AI video search technology from Avigilon, pedestrian and vehicle detection and feature recognition from Dahua and Hikvision, and GPU-accelerated video management software from Milestone.

Pivot 3 exhibited its hyper-converged infrastructure platforms, which are said to enable customers to realise new levels of performance, resiliency and scale within their video surveillance environments. Promise Technology showcased its complete portfolio of servers and storage solutions together with its Video Management Software (VMS), Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA) and IP Camera partners, including Axis, AxxonSoft, Bosch, Digifort, Ipsotek, IronYun, Milestone, OnSSI and Toshiba. Ipsotek impressed visitors with its latest scenario-based video analytics software, and Business Development Manager for North America Sam Glacken, as well as CEO Bill Flind, were on hand to answer questions about the technology.

On the success of the show, SIA CEO Don Erickson commented: “ISC West 2017 was the most exciting trade show in recent memory. Undoubtedly, ISC East 2017 in New York and ISC West 2018 will capitalize on this buzz.”
