Jacksons: Improving perimeter security and safety for the Eurotunnel

A perimeter security project presentation delivered in conjunction with Jacksons, the UK Security Expo and Security Media Publishing.

The Government’s decision to ‘plug the security infrastructure gaps’ during the highs of the migrant crisis in summer 2015, resulted in Jacksons Fencing, one of the UK’s leading designers, manufacturers and installers of security fencing and access control systems, winning a tender for 3.2km of fencing and gates to improve perimeter security and safety for the Eurotunnel terminal in Coquelles, Calais. They subsequently won further work, increasing the total to 11.5km of fencing and 65 gates throughout the site.

The initial project consisted of 3.2km of white powder coated Securi-Mesh fencing with steel Y-beams installed to protect the Eurotunnel complex, with 1.8km of the fencing installed within ‘the loop’. As part of this initial stage of the project, Jacksons also installed a 4m x 14m fully automated cantilever sliding gate at the water treatment area of the Coquelles site.

Further work won included the installation of 35 single-leaf pedestrian gates, 13 specialist automated gates, 14 double-leaf swing gates, and two tunnel gates.

Each gate post for the large double-leaf swing gates weighs over a tonne and each gate leaf measures 7m wide, weighing 1600kg and operated by 125mm bore x 1300mm stroke, rams weighing over 200 kilos and capable of lifting over 19 tonnes – the equivalent to a full double decker bus – these massive gates are anything but lightweight, and yet have opening and closing operations that are able to complete within 60 seconds. Constructed from hot dip galvanised steel, to provide protection against corrosion inside and out, before being powder coated white in-house, the gates were manufactured at Jacksons Kent-based HQ, located just 12.4 km from the UK entrance to Eurotunnel in Folkestone.

The Jacksons Fencing Contracts team based in Calais, working in harness with the design and manufacturing teams in Kent, ensured a fast and accurate installation of the plug and play wired gates, with hanging and adjustment taking approximately three hours.

Peter Jackson, Jacksons’ CEO commented:

“While we have designed and manufactured larger sliding gates, the sheer size, operating environment and performance requirements of this gate presented a few challenges, especially given the short deadline which needed to be met. I’m delighted and proud that the teams here and in France proved that they had the flexibility and determination to rise to this exacting challenge.”
