Microsense brings intelligent detection to the perimeter edge

Microsense Solutions is revolutionising the perimeter security market with its feature rich IP based detection system. Each sensor acts as a secure PoE network element on the perimeter edge integrating microwave detection with other perimeter devices such as IP cameras and wireless communication devices. An intrusion through the invisible microwave curtain triggers an alarm and video transmission of the intrusion to the Cloud, SMART devices or to the Client’s Security Management System. The system has a number of expandable software and hardware modules for increased data analytics and functionality.

The advantage of microwave detection over other technologies is its ability to operate in any weather condition and the long range of operation. Detection zones are expandable from between 3m and 100m, which are also stackable for increased detection zone height. However, conventional microwave systems stuck in the analog world are unduly sensitive, are cumbersome to set up and require wide “sterile zones” which has ruled them out for many applications.

Unlike traditional microwave detection systems each Microsense sensor is a transmitter and a receiver and when paired with a second sensor establishes an active back-scatter bi-static radar link giving intruder detection information from each side of the microwave link. The microwave signal is modulated to provide robust authentication of both ends of the link and amplitude and phase information of the RF signal is available at each side. This technique enables more detailed information to be extracted about the size and position of the intrusion than conventional systems and yields a high probability of detection (Pd). Furthermore, by integrating the Microsense sensor with an IP camera on the perimeter edge system integrators and Alarm Response Centres (ARCs) are able to establish a low nuisance alarm rate (NAR).

A second benefit of the patented modulated back-scatter technique is that it creates a beam which is less susceptible to external interference than conventional systems and, since the beam width is narrow, it requires a smaller footprint, making it suitable for various new applications.

IP features include Power over Ethernet (PoE) and a secure network element which can generate ECC and Hashing functions to support robust authentication. Each sensor has a unique ID supplied from EAL5 secure storage and real time streaming encryption at up to 256 Bit AES making it impossible to clone a Microsense unit.

Two module types are available MS50.0, zone length 3m to 50m, and MS100.0, zone length 50m to 100m, housed in IP65 high impact ABS plastic. The MS100.0 unit has 2 multi-function relays, 2 Ethernet ports and 4 Analog IOs. While standard communication is by PoE there are options for Bluetooth, WiFi, RS485 and fibre-optic backhaul.

This easy to install system is a cost effective solution for gates and partial or complete perimeters. The XML interface module allows easy integration with any alarm monitoring system. A proprietary Security Management System (SMS) is not required making the system amenable to small and medium sized installations. The many applications which would benefit from the system’s features include power stations, petrochemical plants, airports, solar farms, schools and data-centres.
