Norway Post goes for Nedap’s driver based vehicle identification

Nedap’s long-range RFID solution was implemented at most of the sorting facilities of the Norway Post. The key benefit for the Norway Post is the fact that employees can use their existing badge for both access control into their offices and for vehicle access when entering the logistic areas of the distribution centres. The result is a secure, fast flow of vehicles at all the terminals of the Nordic company.

Largest Norwegian employer
With almost 20.000 employees, the Norwegian Post is the biggest employer in Norway. Operating under their two brands – Posten and Bring – the postal and logistics company develops and delivers integrated solutions for postal, communications and logistics services. The Nordic company has 1,400 points of sale all throughout Norway via traditional post offices and in-store post offices in retail outlets such as supermarkets.

Successful and easy integration
The implementation of the solution for access control started in 2008 on Norway Post’s Robsrud Terminal, where more than 60% of all the mail in Norway is handled. Today it is installed in most of the Norway Post terminals. The successful and easy integration led to an extended infrastructure over the nationwide terminals in strategic locations like Stavanger, Drammen, Frederikstad, Bergen, Molde, Trondheim and Oslo.

The newest facility near Oslo will be the largest and most advanced facility of its kind in Norway. With handling up to 150.000 packages and about 1000 inbound and outbound freight shipments each day, the flow of vehicles at the terminal gates needed to be optimized and secured. Nedap’s long-range identification system offers fast but secure access control for the vehicles entering and exiting the terminals based on the existing Norway Post employee badges.

Reliable solution

“We have selected the Nedap TRANSIT solution because it supports multi-technology cards, allowing Norway Post to keep our established HID Corporate 1000 format whilst upgrading to higher security. The Nedap long-range RFID system is a very reliable solution which can be found in all parts of the world in high-end security applications and is easy to integrate with various access control panels. Last but not least Nedap provided full support during this complex implementation trajectory.” says Arnfinn Nordheim, Security Director, Norway Post.

Nedap’s TRANSIT was selected for secure vehicle access control. The TRANSIT Standard, a powerful RFID reader with a reading distance of up to 10 meters, was installed at most of the terminals of the parcel sorting facilities. Nedap’s Booster offers patented technology: the transponder contains a unique vehicle identification number, but is also a card reader that reads the inserted personal identification card of the driver. With the Booster onboard of the cars and freight trucks, both the vehicle and driver are identified simultaneously. This TRANSIT solution supports all common interfaces and transfers data to any access control panel securely.

“Nedap is the only company in the world offering this innovative solution which allows us to read an RFID employee badge over more than 10 meters. The Nedap products can be found in all parts of the world in high-end security applications which gave us the confirmation to make a reliable choice.” says Tor R. Jacobsen, Senior Security Advisor, Norway Post.

“It was important for Norway Post to deploy an advanced access control solution based on cutting edge technology and solutions, which will ensure a high security and reliability. The marked unique Booster solution from Nedap enables them to seamlessly migrate from existing legacy technologies to newer, more advanced technologies. As a marked leading company in the industry we provide high quality products with unique features combined with full technical support, which differentiates us from the traditional suppliers.” says Jan Hofman, Senior Business Development Manager at Nedap Identification Systems.
