The OCS security and cleaning team at the Borough Parade shopping centre in Chippenham, Wiltshire, have been presented with an Above and Beyond the Call of Duty (ABCD) Award.

The award was given by Councillor Sylvia Gibson, Chippenham’s Mayor, in recognition of their excellent work in keeping the centre clean, safe and secure.

The ABCD Awards to Rob and Dan (security) and Billy and John (cleaning) recognise their individual and collective actions over more than two years.

The two cleaners have demonstrated involvement and commitment, maintaining the high standards of the centre and contributing to a welcoming environment. In particular, the annual floral display is much appreciated by shoppers.

The security staff have dealt calmly and professionally with everything from the simple everyday tasks of assisting shoppers to antisocial behaviour and serious crime. Incidents include:

  • An elderly lady whose mobility scooter had broken down
  • Lost children
  • Shoppers taken ill
  • Shoplifting
  • Suspect packages
  • Aggressive behaviour
  • Damage caused by vehicles

The security log for Borough Parade shows a high arrest rate following incidents, which clearly has a direct impact on the safety and security of both the centre and the surrounding area.

To illustrate the willingness of staff to go “above and beyond”, they assisted the police with crowd control following a traffic accident in nearby Market Place, clearing the bus station to allow the paramedic helicopter to land.

OCS team members at Borough Parade have shown excellent awareness of the demands of the business and the importance of good communication with shop managers. The ABCD Awards to Rob and Dan cite their “sustained exemplary performance and contribution to safety and security at Borough Parade.” The citations for Billy and John reference their “full involvement, commitment, awareness and reliability.”

On behalf of Mountgrange, the asset managers of the shopping centre, Dominic Moore said: “We are delighted to recognise the outstanding service provided by the security and cleaning team at Borough Parade. Working closely with our retailers and the local community, they work hard to ensure our customers are able shop in a pleasant, safe environment and are always ready to go the extra mile. Our goal is to ensure visitors enjoy visiting Borough Parade and want to come back time and time again and this is something we certainly would not be able to achieve without the genuine dedication and hard work of the entire team.”
