Remembrance Sunday: Special Edition Somme 1916 Pin by Kirintec

As Remembrance Sunday approaches, I wanted to consider the Battle of the Somme. I feel gratitude towards those who served, as well as those who continue to serve today.

The battle of the Somme was a First World War by British and French armies against the German empire. It ended on 18 November 1916.

Over a million soldiers were wounded or killed at the Somme Offensive. The offensive is also known as the Battle of the Somme. The battle is remembered as one of the bloodiest battles in history.

Together we remember

Remembrance Sunday is held on the Sunday closest to Armistice Day. The eleventh hour, of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the UK and Commonwealth. Together we unite. We join to mark contributions of British and Commonwealth military and civilian’s in World War’s I, II and later conflicts.

This year the Royal British Legion has bought out a commemorative Somme 1916 Poppy Lapel Pin. To tell the story of sacrifice made at the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago. I am interested to learn about the symbolism of each little brass pin.

Somme 1916 pin

First of all an uniquely the special edition brass pin has been created from British shell fuses fired during the historic battle.

Indeed the detailing of each pin is exquisite. The paint at the centre is mixed with soil from the same fields British soldiers fought on one hundred years ago. Just as the unique poppies that formed the installation ‘Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red’, at the Tower of London were individually cast, no two Battle of the Somme pins are the same.

This exacting detail is down to the unique materials used to create them and symbolically marks an individual life that was lost. Furthermore, each comes with a certificate featuring details of the soldier it commemorates. Due to this, it is personalisation at its best!

Finally, if you can, please support our British Armed Forces and their families and visit the Royal British Legion’s Poppy shop, we credit them with the above photograph.

Similarly, thank you if your are a veteran or are currently in service. We appreciate the courage and service you provide.
