Visiting ships and waterborne demos announced for DSEI 2021

Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) will host five Royal Navy and international visiting ships when it takes place 14-17 September at London ExCeL. The vessels will provide an exclusive showcase of maritime technology and capability for visitors to explore. The visiting ships are: HMS ARGYLL HMS BITER HMS RANGER HMS MAGPIE BNS Pollux HMS ARGYLL will be returning to DSEI after two years of new operations. ARGYLL was deployed to the Arabian Gulf in 2020 and recently conducted duties as the UK’s Fleet Ready Escort where she remained at very high readiness. Trialling several the Royal Navy’s newest capabilities, ARGYLL is the oldest ship of her Type-23 Frigate class but also one of the most advanced. HMS ARGYLL Commander, Charlie Wheen said: “I am delighted that HMS ARGYLL can once again support DSEI. We are the oldest serving Frigate in the Royal Navy, and yet through constant capability upgrades we remain one of the most technologically advanced Ships in the Fleet. Our last visit to DSEI in 2019 showcased the Sea Ceptor Missile System following an Indo Pacific deployment; the first such deployment on operations with the new system. Since then the Ship has deployed to the Middle East, operated at reach through the Pandemic in 2020, and more recently trialled Sea Ceptor and the Artisan Radar 997 to develop new capabilities against complex threats during Ex FORMIDABLE SHIELD. There is much to talk about and we are very much looking forward to showing off the Ship and the team”. HMS BITER and RANGER, both new to DSEI, are inshore patrol vessels and part of the Coastal Forces Squadron which operates across the UK and as far as the Baltic Sea and Gibraltar. As P2000 Archer Class patrol crafts, they are unique in their ability to operate in ports and confined waters that are not accessible to warships and can be used to support roles from safeguarding Britain’s nuclear fleet and maritime security to participating in NATO overseas operations and training the next generation of naval officers. HMS BITER recently conducted training with the London Marine Policing Unit and participated in Exercise Strike Warrior 21 to simulate fast inshore attack boats and test the responses of all Task Group platforms including aircraft, ships and submarines. HMS RANGER recently supported security operations for the G7 Summit and officer training in Portsmouth. Lt Rebecca Higgins, HMS BITER Commanding Officer said: “In order to train the best we need to be the best. HMS BITER, built in 1985, a P2000, one of the smallest vessels in the Royal Navy’s arsenal, would not be able to support the Maritime Security Operations, FOST serials and multi-national exercises, amongst other tasking we routinely do, were it not for the modern and creative thought of technological companies. After a year of tasking hampered by COVID-19 I am thankful that DSEI is able to go ahead and for the opportunity to be a part of it assisting with waterborne capability demonstrations or through enabling people the best view from the water”. Also new to DSEI, HMS MAGPIE is the Royal Navy’s only commissioned Inshore Survey Vessel. With a complement of nine, her primary role is to conduct detailed surveys of UK strategic ports and approaches. To enable this she is exceptionally manoeuvrable, equipped with modern survey systems, and able to deploy and recover uncrewed underwater vehicles. Visiting a foreign port for the first time in more than 18 months, BNS Pollux will attend DSEI for a second time. BNS Pollux and her sister ship BNS Castor are part of the Belgian Navy contribution to the Belgian Coastguard structure.  Both Coastal Patrol Vessels (CPV) are active in support of Coastal Security in the Belgian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and territorial waters (TTW), often in close cooperation with other authorities. BNS Pollux takes on roles in fisheries and customs inspections, MARPOL inspections, escort of non-NATO units, search and rescue operations at sea, COLREG patrols, protection of critical infrastructure, anti-pollution operations, sparring partner for both national and NATO vessels training at MOST (Mine countermeasures vessels Operational Sea Training). Waterborne Demonstrations DSEI will also host a range of daily waterborne demonstrations at the Royal Dock alongside ExCeL. These will take place from Tuesday to Thursday, AM 10:30 – 11:15 and PM 14:30 – 15:15, and Friday from AM 10:00 – 10:45 and PM 13:30 – 14:15. Allsalt Maritime in partnership with Simrad and Ambex, will demonstrate the Very Slender Vessel (VSV) 50, a 16m carbon fibre interceptor, fitted out with shock mitigation seating from Allsalt and a full suite of Simrad navigation and comms equipment, ideal for high speed chases or a test platform. Atlas Elektronik will showcase its Officer Training Boats, designed to provide self-contained training facilities and accommodation for up to nine Officer Cadets and four instructors. As a SEA Class boat, the OTB is also designed to be Modular and offer a re-role capability to meet new user and operational requirements. The first of the Officer Training Boats (OTBs) was delivered to British Royal Navy Collage (BRNC)last year, with a total of eight now formally handed over to the MoD. Berthon Boat Company will demonstrate the British built Gemini Waverider, an 8.80m RIB powered by the Cox Powertrain 300hp diesel engine. Visitors can also see SAAB’s new multi-mission combat boat, the Docksta CB 90HSM. A smart and flexible craft that can be used for intelligence gathering and ops coordination. The platform is based on evolutionary design from CB90 with over 250 units in operation world-wide. Survitec will demonstrate the GPM 530 inflatable boat which can be deployed from air, land, sea and subsurface. In service within NATO, Americas and APAC region the GPM 530 is designed around operators and their operational experiences. The boat can be configured to support multiple mission profiles including covert insertion/extraction, rapid response, surveillance, search and rescue and law enforcement. Volve Penta will showcase the Marell M15 Patrol vessel, designed for anti-piracy operations, border control, intelligence gathering, maritime security, boarding and patrol/police mission. The helmsman’s central position, inherited from racing and piloting operations, gives full and optimal control during boarding and advanced manoeuvres.

Dr Hugo Rosemont: Security and government, the perfect merger

Security Buyer talks to Dr Hugo Rosemont, ADS’s Director for the Security and Resilience sector, on security strategy, COVID-19, counter terrorism and international missions Dr Hugo Rosemont, ADS Director of Security and Resilience, discusses in depth the growing relationship between ADS members and the UK Government on security issues. He also discusses how, increasingly, the security and resilience sector is beginning to work more closely with the defence sector. Delving into topical issues such as how the security industry has stepped up to the challenge of COVID-19, and life after the Coronavirus era, Rosemont outlines the success and evolution of the UK security industry. How have you seen the influence of ADS in guiding the Government’s defence and security policies? We always seek to make a constructive contribution in our mission to facilitate effective public-private cooperation on security issues, including for example though the launch of the 2019 Security Export Strategy which was published at DSEI. We were very privileged to have been working with the Government to finalise and publish that strategy. Things have moved since then, of course, but in 2019 we were in a period of intense Brexit discussions and hopefully we played a positive role to ensure that the government produced a sector-specific strategy during a very challenging period for the UK. I have not checked, but there can’t have been too many sector specific strategies published in that time and we are proud to have delivered that. The strategy was important because the previous iteration had been published in 2014 and things have moved on – we needed to ramp up the export campaign and seek to build upon the earlier efforts. Many new capability areas of innovation and expertise were in their formative stages back in 2014, but the UK is now arguably the world leader in many of these. If one thinks of counter-drone capability, for example, this is an emerging capability where the UK is renowned for excellence. ADS members have set up a special interest group in this area, and the capabilities available were not included as part of the 2014 export strategy – why would they have been? It was important to refresh the strategy and let the international community know what the UK can offer. We have also been working very closely with colleagues in Government to develop a ‘whole of government approach’ to UK security exports. The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the lead department in this area, but we have been promoting the need for other departments and agencies to play a greater role in support.  For example, the Home Office is now playing a substantial role in many international trade missions we have delivered and have attracted many new international delegations to attend its own annual Security & Policing event that we run. It has been good to see that the partnership between DIT, Home Office and the industry has really gone from strength to strength. We have been strong advocates for that, so it is pleasing to see everybody is now on the same page.     How did you support the development of the Security Export Strategy? We helped to convene extensive engagement in the formulation of the strategy with industry parties. It is Government’s decision on how to consult appropriately, but at our encouragement the DIT Defence and Security Organisation did that – and in a very constructive way. We brought many of our senior industry leaders into a series of DIT workshops as the strategy was being developed. A key ingredient for success was the partnership approach that was cemented. At the 2019 iteration of Security & Policing, the Chairman of our industry alliance the UK Security and Resilience Industry Suppliers’ Community (RISC), Sir Kevin Tebbit, signed a collaborative agreement with the Government, with the then Secretary of State for International Trade, the Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox MP, to establish the principles and modus operandi for how we would work together. I think this agreement set an excellent tone for the engagement as we headed into finalising the strategy which was then published in September 2019. It got the top level buy in that was needed to harness all the different and disaggregated parts of Government and industry. So, a real alliance was formed, and I think DIT and RISC can take some credit in bringing that together. We now all accept, of course, that the key is actually around how we implement this strategy collectively, whether at the Dubai trade mission earlier this year, or at Milipol in Paris last November. There is fantastic Government support for these UK missions across the different departments. How has that new leadership come about? I think there are multiple factors. I think that Government began to see that the global security market was growing substantially. For example, when you look at some of the subsectors of the security market – think cyber security or counter drone – we are seeing extremely rapid growth and there is growing understanding and realisation that the UK has excellent capability, so there is a market opportunity to seize. With Brexit in the background and the Government’s policy orientation towards ‘Global Britain’, we have also been part of that conversation. But I think this has more to do with having confidence around the UK’s excellence in security, counter terrorism and areas like cyber – and understanding this is a sector in which people look to the UK. We are currently the fourth leading exporter in the security sector, which for a country for our size, is impressive. But we can still do better and there are ambitious plans to do more. Our counter-terrorism strategy, known as CONTEST, is respected worldwide and is very clear about the contributions to it from the private sector. Similarly, in cyber security the country has an excellent reputation arising from Bletchley Park and the excellence of our intelligence agency GCHQ. We also have the reputation of New Scotland Yard and the

New SETAS Vision system allows for full situational awareness whilst the crew can remain safely inside the vehicle especially in an urban environment HENSOLDT’s SETAS vision system for armoured vehicles successfully demonstrated at British Army Armoured Centre, Bovington Sensor solution provider HENSOLDT successfully carried out the initial fitting and operating activities of its newly developed electro-optical vision system SETAS (See-through Armour System) with the British Army’s Armoured Trials and Development Unit (ATDU) in Bovington. This activity was to capture, understand and then minimise potential operating issues in the future. Fitted on a ‘Warrior’ Infantry Fighting Vehicle, SETAS demonstrated its potential to give full situational awareness in the daylight hours to the vehicle crew while staying safely inside. SETAS is being presented at this year’s Defence & Security Equipment International DSEi in London on the HENSOLDT booth, No. S3-200, and on an ‘Eagle 6×6’ Armoured vehicle on the stand of General Dynamics, No. S9-200. “SETAS gives Armoured vehicle crews exceptional visibility of their surroundings”, said Andreas Hülle, Managing Director of HENSOLDT Optronics. “The user can stay in safety within the vehicle but with a high degree of situational awareness of his surrounding environment outside. Particularly in urban environment this capability is a key enabler for rapid decision making and as such platform survivability.” The SETAS Integrated Camera Models houses two types of powerful sensors, very high-resolution visual cameras (1 or 2) and two uncooled thermal imager module (UCM). The visual sensor is capable of the recognition of a pedestrian at a distance of some 300 metres. This observation capability can be further enhanced with the integration of other sensors, such as acoustic sniper detection sensors, laser warner system and a hemispherical camera to cover the area directly above the vehicle. Using a head mounted display as HMI, a crew member inside can virtually “see through” the armour achieving the same amount of orientation as observing when “heads up”. Intelligent software algorithms are automatically alerting the crew if a potentially threatening movement is detected within the 360° around the vehicle. SETAS can easily be fitted as a stand-alone system. However, greater advantage of the system can be achieved if the SETAS is connected to the vehicle’s network or Battle Management System, displaying external data to each crew member individually. SETAS will be available from 2020.

New Range Rover Sentinel unveiled at DSEI Introducing the new Range Rover Sentinel: A luxury fortress on wheels The Sentinel will make its global debut at the Defence and Security Equipment International Exhibition at London’s ExCeL arena from 15th to 18th September 2015. Range Rover Sentinel is the first armoured Land Rover to be fully engineered by Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) Based on the luxurious Range Rover Autobiography Retains Land Rover’s huge breadth of capability and uncompromised levels of luxury and refinement VR8 level certification confirms impressive ballistic and blast resistance Will make public debut at Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) Show on 15-18 September at Excel, London, UK On sale now, priced from under €400,000 (excl. taxes) The Sentinel is based on the standard wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography. It delivers the supreme comfort, command driving position and all-terrain capability of the Range Rover, while providing peace of mind thanks to outstanding occupant protection and, outwardly, looking identical to the standard model. This mobile fortress is designed to withstand the most damaging and targeted of threats including penetration by 7.62mm high velocity, armour piercing incendiary bullets. This exceptional vehicle delivers lateral protection against up to 15kg Trinitrotoluene (TNT) blasts and defence against DM51 grenade explosions from both beneath the floor and above the roof. At its core is a specially-developed six-piece armoured passenger cell, made of super-high-strength steel, providing world-class protection from attack. The standard glass has been replaced by multi-laminated armour privacy glass of optical quality, providing excellent clarity for the driver and occupants, while also delivering bullet protection. The Range Rover Sentinel is fully certified to VR8 standard against ballistic threats by QinetiQ®, an independent organisation that was formerly part of the British Government’s Defence Establishment Research Agency. John Edwards, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations, said: “The Range Rover Sentinel is one of the most extraordinary Range Rovers ever produced. It has been expertly engineered by Special Vehicle Operations to provide class leading levels of protection to occupants against extreme attack, whilst retaining the Range Rover’s luxury and refinement with off road capability.” Sentinel retains the plentiful legroom of the standard model that comfortably seats two full-size adults in the rear. A payload of up to 650kg can be carried thanks to revised Dynamic Stability Control and Ride Stability Control systems. The Command Driving Position found in all Range Rover vehicles remains, giving the driver a clear and unobscured view of the surroundings, particularly useful in the event of an attack. The suspension has been up-rated to ensure Range Rover’s legendary ride comfort and handling are retained, yet still delivers precise on-road dynamics to allow occupants to escape attack. The Sentinel has undergone the same testing as a standard production vehicle and retains the outstanding off-road capability for which Land Rover is famous. The Sentinel has an anti-tamper exhaust, a self-sealing fuel tank, auxiliary back-up battery and a split charging system. The 100mm opening in the driver’s window for document delivery ensures the vehicle is secure. The load space features anti-smash protective glass ensuring the cabin remains a safe house. When it is time to leave in a hurry, run flat inserts in the tyres – fitted to unique 20-inch split rim alloy wheels – allow the vehicle to be driven even if the tyres are deflated. This system ensures that however determined the attack, the Range Rover Sentinel can use the considerable performance of its 340PS 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine in conjunction with a specially-calibrated ZF 8-speed automatic transmission to escape. In addition, 380mm front and 365mm rear ventilated disc brakes, both with high-density pads, ensure impressive stopping power when needed. If the worst happens and the main doors are blocked by an accident or an attack, occupants can leave the vehicle via the Emergency Escape System behind the rear seats. Despite this special security feature, the basic design is uncompromised and the Range Rover Sentinel is still equipped with the elegant split-level tailgate of the standard production vehicle. Optional protection features include under floor and under bonnet fire suppression systems, a customer configurable siren system, emergency service lights and an external speaker system to address people outside the vehicle from the safety of the cabin. The Range Rover Sentinel is unmatched in capability and protection by any third-party conversion. Externally, it is discreet and almost identical in appearance to the vehicle from which it is derived, with few visual clues as to what lies beneath the skin. A full driver-training programme is also provided to ensure drivers are capable of handling the vehicle to maximum effect in the most challenging circumstances. Despite the huge levels of security offered by the vehicle’s armour and occupant protection systems, the Range Rover Sentinel remains a Range Rover to the core. It delivers the same exceptional levels of luxury ride and comfort as a conventional Range Rover Autobiography. Customers can still choose from an extensive range of exterior paint colours; and Ebony, Ivory or Dark Cherry interior colour ways with leather headlining an option. A range of bespoke options is available on request. Standard Range Rover features such as Blind Spot Monitoring, Close Vehicle Sensing and Surround Camera Security incorporating T-junction view also lend themselves perfectly to the duties this very special Range Rover is designed to perform. The Range Rover Sentinel is fully EU Homologated, available in the UK, Europe, South America, Africa and the Middle East with VR8 level certification. Available to order from the beginning of September 2015, the Range Rover Sentinel has a guide price from under €400,000 and benefits from a three-year, 50,000-mile warranty. Additional global aftersales support includes scheduled visits each year by a specialised technician. John Michael, CEO of iStorage states: “DSEI, an event which brings together the entire defence and security industry, is the ideal platform to introduce the datAshur Pro. We understand that there are certain levels of encryption and safety that the defence and government sectors must comply with where data security is concerned. iStorage designs products with that in mind, and the datAshur Pro is pending a range of high-level accreditations to reflect this and to ensure the mutual goal of providing the highest levels of data protection is always met.” The pending CESG CPA Foundation Grade accreditation entails a rigorous evaluation period where products are tested against published security and development standards. The certification means that the government, wider public sector and industry can use products while being safe in the knowledge that their data will be guarded against theft should the device be lost or stolen. DSEI, the world-leading defence and security event, will take place 15-18 September at ExCel in London. iStorage will be exhibiting in the Cyber Zone on stand N7-199, this zone showcases innovative and ground breaking companies in an increasingly important industry. iStorage will be exhibiting its full range of PIN-encrypted storage solutions, where the team will be on hand to answer questions around the best methods of data security.
