ATG Surface Guard at Rolling Stones concert

Two Rolling Stones concerts became the latest star-studded events to receive the highest level of protection against potential terror attacks. As more than 30,000 music fans descended on the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, on 2 June 2018, and a further 50,000 on Manchester three days later, to watch the legendary Mick Jagger and Keith Richards play, an innovative road block system was deployed to protect the events and its attendees from any security breaches. Surface Guard, the state-of-the-art security solution developed by ATG Access, the world’s leading innovator of road blockers, bollards and barriers, was installed at three locations around the Ricoh arena and at two locations around Old Trafford Stadium. This security solution has been designed in response to the recent surge in vehicle attacks across Europe. The Surface Guard barrier can withstand the impact of a 7,200kg vehicle travelling at 32kph and has been tested in accordance to the IWA 14 crash test standard. The barriers’ lightweight and modular design meant that it was deployed at both locations quickly and efficiently minimising disruption to event operation and the surrounding area. The system was then removed equally as quickly by Stadium TM – a specialist hostile vehicle mitigation barrier installer. Two Surface Guard Vehicle Access Points were also deployed around the Ricoh Arena to allow emergency vehicles to easily pass through the barriers in the event of an accident, injury or attack. Glenn Cooper, CEO at ATG Access, said: “Following the appalling attacks at the Bataclan Theatre in Paris and also at the Manchester Arena, event organisers have realised that they need to take additional steps in order to protect attendees. “The safety of fans is paramount, and it is great to see that event organisers are increasingly turning to our innovative Surface Guard solution as the answer. When it comes to pedestrian-permeable, temporary event security, there aren’t any other security solutions that can challenge Surface Guard’s effectiveness, nor its ability to be rapidly deployed. This makes it an excellent option for securing temporary events and concerts.” “High impact, low technological methods to disrupt and intimidate society have taken place in recent years and we must do all we can to mitigate such methods. The Surface Guard providing an ideal solution in temporary event security due to its deployable nature and how it fits into the event surroundings. Making communitites feel safe and secure in environments to enjoy world famous music artists is something we are very proud to do.” The Rolling Stones’ concerts weren’t the only major events secured over recent weeks, as Surface Guard was also chosen to protect the 40,000 attendees at this year’s BBC: The Biggest Weekend, Coventry 2018. Live Barriers' Stormfence protects would leaders

Live Barriers, one of Europe’s pioneering experts in temporary access solutions, helped to protect 53 World Leaders at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London this April. Working in partnership with CLD Fencing Systems, Live Barriers deployed its StormFence Temporary System ahead of the high-security meeting, which welcomed over 2000 delegates, from 6 continents around the world. Almost 1000m of StormFence was installed around The Green Park and The Mall, to protect members of the public, residents and those attending or working at the events held in the Commonwealth Village. Temporary Vehicle and Pedestrian Gates, including turnstiles, were also supplied and semi-permeable screens were attached to the system to offer privacy inside both the Commonwealth Village and key security points. As an exclusive barrier and fencing supplier to the London Metropolitan Police, Live Barriers were tasked with supplying a system that offers all of the safety and security of a permanent fencing system, but with zero ground strike. Mark Fisher, General Manager at Live Barriers explained: “StormFence is a revolution in event temporary fencing, offering increased safety, security and sustainability. Using a rigid steel mesh system, StormFence is self-supporting, prevents penetrative vandalism and withstands wind speeds of over 100mph. “It was an honour to be asked to provide a solution for such a high profile event and also a reflection of the company’s continuing commitment to excellence and innovation for counteracting the increasing global security threats.” As one of the leading suppliers to Europe’s events industry, Live offer an extensive range of fencing and crowd barriers, ranging from their Super-Fortress fence that is famed for its use at Glastonbury Festival, to a range of crowd control barriers installed in their thousands at events across the UK. The company’s StormFence system has previously been deployed on a number of projects; including Glastonbury Festival and Connect for HS2, where the temporary fencing has been used to great success.

SimpliWiFi launch UK first in heat mapping tech at Event Production Show

One of the UK’s largest suppliers of mobile WiFi services has unveiled its latest foray into the world of event’s technology with the launch of its unique heat mapping technology. Thought to be a UK first, SimpliWiFi’s new service makes use of conventional CCTV and thermal imaging cameras to find hot spots in crowds during festivals in order to aid events organisers. Hot spots can indicate where a crush might be likely to occur and the technology is so accurate that it can even spot a person on the ground at night or in bad weather, allowing security and paramedics to aid an injured guest. Launched at the Event Production Show, which is taking place at Olympia London, the service has already been trialled at a number of events in 2017 and is now available for hire in 2018. Heat mapping data powered by SimpliWiFi suggests that organisers may be making fundamental errors by posting stewards in the wrong places. Heat maps gathered from test events suggest that problems often occur in the middle of a crowd and if stewards had access to technology capable of delivering real-time information on high-risk incidents, they could be quickly deployed to defuse or save a potentially harmful situation. Ozan Pakyuz, Managing Director at Hereford-based SimpliWiFi, said: “While the foundation of our business is based upon the provision of high-speed WiFi and telephony at major events, we have decided to branch out in this new direction based upon our experience of attending festivals and concerts around the UK. “It is disheartening to see large crushes or injured people at these events when people have come along to have fun. We knew that something more could be done, which is why we have teamed up with a leading provider of thermal technology to develop this new system which works in a variety of conditions.” He added that the technology had a number of applications outside health and safety as well, that event organisers, retailers and disaster recovery specialists would find useful. “Using heat mapping we can spot where people might be in distress in a crowd, but the technology can also be used to spot where the largest number of people are standing or high areas of footfall so that stands and mobile sellers can target these areas,” said Ozan. “Outside of a festival environment, the data and images could also be used by rescue teams searching for bodies or sources of heat. With so many applications out there, we are really hopeful that this new technology will take off.” SimpliWiFi has been present on both days of the Events Production Show on 28 February 2018 and 1 March 2018 on stand L74E displaying its unique WiFi and security solutions to visitors. ATG Access on a mission to protect pedestrians from vehicle attacks

A British-designed innovative road block system, which can withstand the force of a 2,500kg vehicle travelling at 30 mph, is now available to help protect the public from future terrorist attacks. Surface Guard has been developed by the world’s leading innovator of road blocker, bollard and vehicle barrier systems, ATG Access, and is the first system of its kind to protect pedestrians from targeted vehicle attacks. Recent attacks targeting pedestrians in Nice, at the Berlin Christmas Markets and more recently in London, Barcelona and New York have highlighted the need for event security to be ramped up. The new surface guard system has been designed to deter vehicular attacks, but to also prevent and immobilise hostile vehicles that do attempt an attack. Tested to the IWA 14 standard, the surface guard system has successfully arrested a 2,500kg vehicle travelling at 30 mph. Modular in design and compact and easy to store, this system is lightweight and quick to deploy. Unlike many traditional barriers, no heavy machinery is required to install the system – four men can close off a roadway using the surface guard system in under an hour. When the system is no longer required, it is even quicker to remove and causes no damage to the road surface as no anchoring is required. Supplied in individual units, each section of the barrier can be stacked to make transportation and storage very easy. Rather than creating a ‘fortress feel’, it has been designed to complement its surroundings and allow pedestrians to flow freely into the designated area. Emergency vehicles can also pass through access points if necessary. Whilst being aesthetically attractive, the system provides a resilient deterrent. Surface Guard has already successfully protected cycle lanes and roads at Europe’s largest fireworks display in Stockton-On-Tees on Bonfire night 2017, and received positive reviews from security forces and the general public in the UK, after multiple deployments in crowded places. Last month, hundreds of Surface Guard units were dispatched to the United States in response to the New York City terrorist attack in Manhattan. It was also demonstrated at the US’s largest annual security convention, ISC East, in New York City. In early 2018, the system will be making its way across to France to demonstrate how it can protect the public from future terrorist attacks. Euro 2016: playing tough with event security

Euro 2016: playing tough with event security

The UEFA Euro 2016 football tournament – the largest sporting event in Europe this year – is now moving into its final stages. So far, across the 10 French host cities, the security measures being fielded have been up to the task of protecting spectators, players, and the wider public from the spectre of terrorism which, sadly, has loomed large over the past year.
