The Security Industry Association (SIA) has launched Startups in Security, a new community and accelerator program for security innovators. This dynamic initiative, guided by SIA’s Executive Advisory Board, is an initiative designed to identify, support and partner with innovative startups, scale-ups and industry leaders shaping the future of security technology. Startups in Security is designed for companies classified as startups or scale-ups who are seeking to propel their growth and establish industry relationships. Eligible startups include: Companies in their early operational stages and focused on product/service development Innovation-oriented businesses introducing novel solutions Organizations targeting large or emerging markets with significant growth potential Companies that typically rely on external funding for growth Businesses managing significant market and financial uncertainties Participation is not limited by company size, age or sector, though tech startups are predominant. “The SIA Startups in Security program represents a pivotal shift in how we embrace innovation in our industry. We’re creating more than just a committee – we’re building a dynamic community that will identify, nurture and accelerate the next generation of security solutions,” said Lee Odess, CEO of The Access Control Collective, member of the SIA Executive Advisory Board and co-chair of SIA Startups in Security. “By bringing together startups, established industry leaders and SIA’s resources, we’re setting the foundation for transformative growth and collaboration that will shape the future of security.” “In the security industry, innovation isn’t just an advantage – it’s essential for survival. Startups bring that vital spark, but navigating this complex landscape alone can be daunting. A robust community and support program, fostering networking, idea sharing, mentoring and collaboration, isn’t just helpful – it’s the lifeline that can transform a promising idea into a thriving business, ensuring an even brighter future of our industry,” said Robert Lydic, president of Wavelynx Technologies, member of the SIA Executive Advisory Board and co-chair of SIA Startups in Security. “Personally, I’ve benefited immensely from the support and guidance of mentors throughout my career. I’ve seen firsthand how these connections can make all the difference, and I’m thrilled to be part of an initiative that will provide similar opportunities for the next generation of security innovators.” Startups in Security will hold monthly meetings (some virtual and some in person) in which community members can share information, engage in peer-to-peer exchange and examine specific challenges and topics within the industry. The community will hold its first gathering on Thursday, April 3, in the Venetian Expo during ISC West, the United States’ largest converged security trade show. At this meeting, startup leaders can connect with fellow entrepreneurs and industry innovators, learn about the new community’s plans and momentum, preview upcoming initiatives and opportunities and discover ways to get actively involved in the program. Learn more and RSVP here. Big Interview – Security Industry Association

Edison Shen, Director of Standards and Technology, Security Industry Association (SIA) talks exclusively to Security Buyer   SIA recently had a session at Security Buyer Live, which is available on demand, what was your session about?  The Security Industry Association (SIA) appreciated the opportunity to present on the SIA Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) standard to security users, developers and suppliers of Security Buyer Live.   Viewers of this session can expect to learn about how and why the OSDP standard was developed, the growth of two other SIA programs based on the OSDP standard, the benefits of OSDP features and a case study of implementing the protocol.  Your session was a panel of two speakers on behalf of the Security Industry Association (SIA). What did each speaker bring to the panel?  Pete Jones and Sal D’Agostino have been active supporters for OSDP, and each brings a different perspective to the session.   Pete founded Third Millennium, an access control manufacturer, with a philosophy towards innovation and adoption of new technologies. He brings his insights on implementation of OSDP as a solution. He is vocal in his support of adopting OSDP over Wiegand and certified his readers through OSDP Verified, a comprehensive testing program that validates through third-party testing that a device conforms to the standard performance profiles.  Sal and his team at IDMachines have over a decade’s worth of technical experience on the OSDP protocol. Sal is an active member within the SIA OSDP Working Group and continues to support OSDP activities through providing his testing service as a third-party laboratory for OSDP Verified and offering training on expertise in deployment of OSDP through the SIA OSDP Boot Camp.  What is the OSDP standard?  OSDP is an industry standard for access control systems developed and published by the members of the OSDP Working Group, which consists of industry representatives, manufacturers, integrators and end users. It is a non-proprietary communication protocol for interfacing between a control panel and one or more peripheral device. This translates to the biggest value for end users, the ability for different manufacturer devices to all work harmoniously through OSDP.  Additionally, the International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC) Technical Committee (TC) 79 Alarm and electronic security systems published the OSDP standard in late 2020, paving the way for international adoption.  What is an industry standard and how are they developed?   Industry standards impact our everyday life from the clothes we wear to the food we eat and buildings we live in. They are documents which define a set of minimal accepted requirements developed voluntarily by the members of an industry to ensure the products, processes or personnel are safe, reliable and interoperable and perform as specified.   SIA is recognised as a Standards Developing Organisation (SDO) accredited by American National Standards Institute and advances guidelines and standards through an open, balanced and consensus-based approach to promote best practices within the industry. We bring together various stakeholders and facilitate an open dialogue to collect new proposals for entry into a technical document. Each proposal is carefully reviewed, deliberated upon, drafted and voted on by the committee for publication.   For more news updates and exclusive features, check out our Q2 issue here. New SIA report: audio & intelligent communications

Informational guide is presented by the SIA Audio and Intelligent Communications Working Group A new guide by the Security Industry Association details the importance of audio and communications for safety and security applications. The informational guide, Safe and Sound: A Primer on Audio and Intelligent Communications Applications for Security. was developed from SIA’s vendor-neutral technology Audio and Intelligent Communications Working Group, of which Dan Rothrock, President of Zenitel Americas, is the Chair. The group was created to serve as a catalyst for the intelligent communications sector of the security industry with the goal of researching and providing authoritative information to educate the industry and the public on how audio communications can be used within a risk, resilience, and security program. The Safe and Sound: A Primer on Audio and Intelligent Communications Applications for Security includes a brief history of audio use in security, the benefits of audio in security solutions, audio technologies and applications, two case studies, legal and privacy considerations, and more. The report covers common existing technologies such as intercoms, loudspeakers, and microphones in addition to emerging technologies like gunshot detection and advanced multisensor audio analytics. It concisely presents how these audio solutions are necessary for improving response time, driving situational awareness, and aligning with business goals of optimization and efficiency. “In today’s risk environment, asking and answering the question ‘Why Audio’?” is more important than ever,” said Dan Rothrock, President of Zenitel Americas. “It was a pleasure to work on this research and report with SIA and my audio industry colleagues, and I look forward to the future conversations regarding the value of audio in security solutions.” Zenitel is a provider of Intelligent critical communication solutions that allow people to hear, be heard, and be understood, in every situation. Zenitel solutions are designed to cater safety and security needs of both onshore and offshore markets. Because communication is critical, Zenitel solutions are also great in integrating with other systems and solution in a seamless way.   Media contact Rebecca Morpeth Spayne, Editor, Security Portfolio Tel: +44 (0) 1622 823 922 Email: [email protected]

SIA aiding the industry

Security Buyer talks exclusively with Don Erickson, CEO, Security Industry Association (SIA) to discover his perspective on the covid-19 pandemic and the future security landscape. SIA provides training and advice, how are you helping guide members during this time?  In the very early days of the pandemic, SIA quickly pivoted to delivering a substantial amount of online content to help guide members during this unprecedented period. We have accelerated the development of online courses and published research that has helped members to increase their sales, onboard employees, harden their products and systems, stay abreast of federal financial assistance available to businesses; all while also facilitating introductions for our members to potential channel partners through innovative programs. SIA has launched SIAcademy LIVE! e-learning programs, which cover specialised topics like how to do business with the government, how to optimise challenging parts of your integration business, cybersecurity training for physical security pros and even technical training on video and access control systems. With the shift to remote working, do you think e-learning and digital training will continue post-covid?   There is no question that business owners have gained a deeper appreciation for the cost efficiencies associated with virtual learning and that digital transformation of many education programs has occurred more quickly than expected. When possible, security professionals will return to valuable in-person experiences and learning environments at events such as ISC West, of which SIA is the premier sponsor and leads the development of its conference program known as SIA Education@ISC. In-person instruction and workshops offered at ISC West and virtual learning opportunities offered by SIA will continue together. As individuals seek professional advancement, they will place greater emphasis on blended content delivery offered through both in-person opportunities such as ISC West workshops and virtual courses including the online SIA Cornerstones Learning Series and Security Project Management (SPM) courses. How do you think the industry has tackled the Covid-19 crisis? This industry never wavered in its determination to fulfil the mission of protecting people, property and assets during the pandemic period. In my more than 15 years at SIA, I have not witnessed a more cohesive mobilisation of business earlier behind a single cause than when more than 500 business leaders worked together earlier this year to secure “essential worker” status. The proliferation of new products introduced in the past year, many of which were recognised during the virtual SIA New Product Showcase (NPS) program, demonstrated that innovation by SIA manufacturer members never slowed down and continued to drive industry financial health. During this pandemic and period of racial unrest, our industry consistently recognised the heroes among us—first responders, teachers, members of the military and health care professionals.
