Zicam celebrates 25 years in business

Zicam Integrated Security is celebrating its 25th year of providing and installing security systems and technology to protect people, places and assets. Since launching in 1996, Zicam has gone from strength to strength, building its reputation of going above and beyond for its customers.  Now celebrating 25 years in business, the company continues with ambitious growth plans which have seen an ongoing investment in both the business and its employees. The year began with the January promotion of David Salisbury to Managing Director, and since then an additional three high-level promotions have been made within the leadership team. This further demonstrates the support the company shows to its employees, and the importance it places on nurturing lasting relationships and developing careers. The recent appointment of a new business development manager will see existing relationships being built on, as well as a strategic reach into new markets. Growing from a one-man operation, that began with CEO and Founder Milan Mazic making the first sales call from his bedroom in 1996, the business now employs over 23 people and has clients such as the NHS, Eddie Stobbart and Sunseeker Yachts in its portfolio. The success and longevity of the company can partly be attributed to it being known in the industry for doing things differently, offering a personal touch backed up by in-depth knowledge and having a passion for providing the very best to its customers. It is this personal touch that Milan states sets the company apart, and this is reflected in a ‘family feel’ to the business and the real team spirit between all colleagues – not always an easy thing to achieve in a large, national company. Milan says: “I am incredibly proud of what has been achieved in the past 25 years. Our whole team is dedicated to providing all existing and potential customers with exceptional service, and this is how we operate internally, too, with every colleague being treated as an equal. “A core strength of the company is also that every one of the management team has extensive practical experience and a commitment to delivering the highest standards of professionalism for every single assignment, regardless of size, and we know what is required to deliver the best results.” With an in-depth knowledge of the industry and close working relationship with the manufacturers, Zicam is well placed to provide security solutions that suit its customers’ needs and clients’ budgets, and this has led to a plethora of glowing endorsements from both. Identiv

Product spotlight – Identiv

Propelling enhanced intelligence across the enterprise, Identiv identifies how raising awareness for real-time situational surveillance with an open security platform is crucial When an organisation implements new technology, stakeholders have more than a few expectations. Technologies must be fast, reliable, safe and provide valuable insight to improve operations. Meeting these expectations is essential when deploying a comprehensive solution to streamline processes while simultaneously providing a complete picture of the entire enterprise. As people and organisations look to the IoT and connected devices for convenience, functionality, and oversight, it is critical to implement fully customisable solutions and integrate them into existing systems to provide increased situational awareness. This demand extends far beyond the IT and business systems we rely on to elevate everyday operations. Once a siloed department viewed as a cost center, physical security is now a critical part of the conversation around overall brand protection, personal safety, and monitoring. It plays a vital role in helping bridge the gap between technology and positive business outcomes. This should not come as a surprise. The physical security world is now deeply interconnected to the digital world. The problem isn’t security, it’s awareness Identiv’s Velocity Vision is the future of visual surveillance: an intelligent video management solution delivering real-time situational awareness in an open security platform. Integrate with your existing systems, verify your environment in one pane of glass, and increase the efficiency of your security operations — get full control of your environment when and where you need it. Facit

Facit and Axis announcement – CCTV analytics

After thorough research and development by Facit Data Systems, Facit’s Smart Count software can now run on Axis Communications cameras, enabling indoor and outdoor perspective-view people and object counting on the edge. Running directly on the camera itself, connecting to a PC just to show the results for reporting. This is a valuable expansion for Axis and an advantageous addition for Facit, an Axis Global Strategic Partner who specialise in CCTV video and image processing software. In today’s commercial environments people counting is vital for resource planning, optimisation, analysis and forecasting. Whether it’s insights to assess how marketing affects visitor numbers, seasonal changes, capacity, safety, security, sales forecasts or staff scheduling; knowing how many come and go and what they look at plays a big part in the success of physical venues and stores. According to ‘Markets and Markets’, the global people counting market will grow to $1.3 Billion by 2025, with demand increasing across all use cases and notably a rise in edge computing is also forecast by ‘Grand View Research’ who predict that edge computing will have a global compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 38.4% from 2021 to 2028. The edge can be defined as processing infrastructure that is close to or at the source of the data capture instead of far away or in the cloud. The advantages of such a set-up are that it increases the speed of data transfer, avoids latency issues, and offers increased data security and easier data protection compliance from on-premises vs the cloud. In this exciting development of Axis cameras directly running Facit’s Smart Count software, it means overall cost saving can also be achieved, as there isn’t the need to buy hardware to run the software; the cameras do the processing for the people counting and a PC, tablet or phone is just needed to see the results. For integrators this can also speed up the set-up time and it can mean less costs for end users regarding both hardware and the engineer’s time. The architecture of the cameras and Facit’s software is such that the cameras can connect over the camera network with Facit’s Smart Count and Smart Reporting being able to run on the cameras themselves and the results viewable via a url. Cameras across multiple separate store locations can also be configured to collect data and feed it to a central computer for data aggregation and reporting across multiple locations.   To stay up to date on the latest, trends, innovations, people news and company updates within the global security market please register to receive our newsletter here. LENSEC

LENSEC announces integration

LENSEC, a manufacturer in video management software, announced a partnership with Open Options to provide flexibility and greater efficiency when combining Perspective VMS and DNA Fusion access control software. The integration between PVMS software by LENSEC and DNA Fusion access control from Open Options enables users to control doors by issuing access control commands to locks and devices. From the Video Management Software, users can manage access points from the map module or the camera viewer module, or by incorporating automated logic workflows from Perspective VMS. PVMS pulls event information from DNA Fusion and can import Open Options devices from the access control configuration database. With the integration, access control events are searchable in Perspective VMS. Events may be associated with security video and tagged as they occur. Events are also found in PVMS transaction history reports, allowing system administrators to filter and search for activity, such as cardholder access, invalid entries, doors forced open, and more. The associated video improves the record with visual verification. Video of the access control event can be extracted, shared internally, and downloaded as watermarked evidence for law enforcement or third parties. “We are excited about our partnership with Open Options,” said Michael Trask, Director of Sales, North America of LENSEC. “Close integrations with third-party systems are how LENSEC achieves beneficial results for joint customers. With this integration, end users now have a way for security operators to make quick and solid decisions and to mitigate risk better and faster than before.” “Today’s modern enterprises require integrated solutions to make the most of their technology investments”, said Chuck O’Leary, Senior Vice President, Americas, ACRE Access Control. external

External security specialists accelerating video analytics

A new NW Security study of 103 medium and large-sized firms across England with existing CCTV systems, found that where an external security systems installer, integrator or security management company is involved, some key video analytics has been much more widely adopted and deployed. Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) is already deployed in nearly two thirds (62%) of existing CCTV systems across the country where security systems management is outsourced to an external security company or managed with the help of an independent security systems installer or integrator. Where CCTV systems are managed entirely in-house, ANPR is fully deployed in less than half of systems (48%). Video Motion Detection (VMD) is available and already deployed in well over half (57%) of existing CCTV systems across the country where security systems management is outsourced to an external security company or managed with the help of an independent security systems installer or integrator. But where CCTV systems are managed entirely in-house, VMD is fully deployed in less than half of systems (49%). Optical Character Recognition (OCR) analysis, sometimes used to improve accuracy of ANPR or to track deliveries of parcels, pallets or containers of goods, is also deployed in 62% of the systems run with the help of external experts. However, where CCTV systems were managed entirely in-house, only 41% of systems said they had deployed OCR analytics. People counting, which has been widely deployed in the retail sector for example, has been deployed in 52% of CCTV systems which are run with the help of external security specialists. However, where CCTV systems were managed entirely in-house, only 38% of systems confirmed they had already deployed people counting analytics. Nearly half (48%) of CCTV system owners have already deployed objection detection and classification analytics to improve the effectiveness of their systems and in this rare incidence the same level of deployment was recorded regardless of whether the system was run entirely in-house or with the help of external parties. Frank Crouwel, Managing Director of NW Security, commented: “It’s interesting to analyse that where outside security system installers or integrators are involved in supporting medium and large-sized firms running video monitoring systems, there is more widespread deployment of major video analytics including VMD, ANPR, OCR and people counting. “Odd then that only a fifth (21%) of firms running camera systems are currently outsourcing any work to third party specialists, even as video analytics deployments offer so much potential for improving CCTV system efficacy and delivering faster return on investment. “What this shows is that an increasing number of third party experts are recommending wider deployment of video analytics, safe in the knowledge that they have the skills and capabilities to configure the right video analytics solutions to assure the increased accuracy of CCTV systems in line with their customers’ operational needs.” External experts more likely to be involved where board-level risk management and holistic security concerns are top priority Where CCTV system improvements include more board-level regulatory or legal compliance, risk management or cyber security systems hardening, third party experts are much more likely to be supporting in-house CCTV systems management teams. So, nearly half (43%) of all companies supported by external security specialists had a live project to improve their ‘system’s ‘hardening’ to combat cybersecurity threats’ as a ‘top priority’ which they were aiming to improve considerably by the end of 2021. Whereas for firms running their CCTV systems in-house, just 35% of them were focused on hardening physical security systems against cyber-attacks right now. Over half (52%) of all firms supported by external security specialists had a top priority project running to improve ‘GDPR compliance and data protection procedures surrounding our CCTV system’. Whereas for firms running their CCTV systems entirely in-house, 45% of them were focused on improving their GDPR compliance capabilities associated with their physical security system by the end of this year. ‘Improvement on the CCTV system’s resilience and back-up systems and procedures’ was a 2021 top priority for over half (52%) of firms where third party security installers, integrators or alarm receiving service providers were involved. Whereas for firms running their CCTV systems entirely in-house, 48% of them were focused on system resilience, back-up systems and procedures. Over two thirds (70%) of the chief executives responsible for their physical security systems which NW Security reached in this study, put ‘Improvement on the system’s resilience and back-up systems and procedures’ as a top priority for 2021 and 62% of proprietors and business owners placed ‘Improvement of GDPR compliance/data protection procedures surrounding our CCTV system’ as a ‘top priority’ in 2021. Frank Crouwel, Managing Director of NW Security, added: “It’s interesting to note that where senior management issues such as cyber security protection and GDPR compliance is top priority for firms right now, external security specialists are much more likely to be working alongside in-house security, FM and IT teams. “The more strategic the issue and the larger potential threat it poses to business continuity, the more likely that system improvement budgets will be green lit, and an outsourced specialist pulled in to help out. “Overall, what the research shows is that where external security systems specialists are involved, a more holistic discussion is enabled which can go beyond the optimisation of existing security systems to deliver an array of strategically important business and operational benefits.”   To stay up to date on the latest, trends, innovations, people news and company updates within the global security market please register to receive our newsletter here. Register for FREE here: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/9098545995423446029  Seagate, Axis Communications and Milestone are all key players in the security marketplace, how are you best positioned to guide and inform the industry? From a Seagate perspective – Seagate, is a market leader in storage for over 40 years, a market leader, which is important. What does it mean to be a leader? It means to be a pioneer of technologies, it means bringing products and pioneering tech to market consistently, and building a reputation of reliability. That is who we are, that is the DNA at our core. 15 years ago, we put a microscope over the surveillance market, we saw that there were challenges from a storage perspective that needed to be met; as a storage leader we will meet these challenges, to guide and inform users and installers, on how to get the very best total cost of ownership (TCO) and performance from a storage perspective. As a market leader, it is also about how we’ve done it, and what we offer from a practical point of view. First of all internally, we have our own dedicated surveillance teams, not just from the perspective of a dedicated EMEA Sales team, but also organisationally within the company. We have a surveillance segment which is dedicated to the market, not the product, but the market. We have teams that are focused on business development, product development & operations management. Uniquely, we have set up a surveillance centre of excellence in Hangzhou, where some of the largest camera manufacturers and surveillance manufacturers are based, for long term R&D and testing. We have committed to a dedicated surveillance track within our Seagate Partner Program for installers. There is a specific track for you within the program, where you can get the latest information, access all the Seagate tools and services that we offer, tailored towards surveillance system installers. With our Alliance Partners Axis and Milestone, we sit down and share our long term road maps, our technologies, challenges we face and what we want to achieve together. With the fullest portfolio of surveillance devices and solutions, we can provide insight and guidance to SMBs and Enterprises looking to scale in their markets. As an example, we have our SkyHawk and SkyHawk AI (artificial intelligence) hard drives that include complimentary Rescue Services for SMBs, for enterprise scale solutions, our Exos hard drives feature Seagate Secure, featuring ADAPT erasure coding to provide best in class, encrypted large scale data sets with the fasted data recovery times, which are 90% faster than RAID configurations. Why is there a need for more robust, scalable storage architecture? Intrinsic to the surveillance industry, is the exponential growth of data creation, which is part and parcel of the surveillance industry. Cameras are more prolific, and produce more data. Those cameras, in their own technology, are delivering higher resolution in both video and audio, resulting in more data. Our EDS solutions come into their own on 500+ camera networks. The technology follows the development of these devices, as we see the real world requirements for AI, the meta data that is being created by cameras, the machine learning where cameras are looking at data and creating data about data, in order to learn patterns on behaviours and identify abnormalities. These trends from the growing requirement for storage that is able to scale, with the need for architecture to deliver scalability with the camera technology and the data demands. Use cases are no longer static, the network grows and expands, that’s today’s norm and that is why data needs to be recorded robustly, encrypted and secured, with the information captured at the device end, being recorded at the storage end. In your opinion, what are the four main technological innovations prevalent today? Artificial Intelligence (AI) – The technology has significantly grown in relevancy and is now a business requirement for a number of verticals to enable high level decision making. With our EDS systems today, they are best placed to manage AI and super-fast streaming with the technology that we have, able to get that data onto the disc, using special algorithms that we have, and ASIC controllers which embed in our EDS systems. Analysing hours and hours of data through machine learning and using AI technology, we can identify what is happening with the data we’re collecting, creating a real benefit to the industry. Connected devices – With IOT the cloud. We’re having cameras that are connected over large areas of deployment, for stadiums, shopping centres, cities, airports… not just cameras, but lots of kinds of different sensors. These are controlled and managed by a centralised VMS, for example Milestone, who will talk about XProtect during the webinar, and how they’re able to manage multiple sensors and pool and point everything together into centralised storage. This is a major technological innovation that enables better decision-making processes and has much greater capabilities when your devices are connected with your access control, for example traffic control management within Smart Cities. Vertical solutions – We are finding new use cases for technologies we already have, identifying specific solutions for emerging industry verticals. These verticals

Product spotlight: Enterprise Data Solutions

Steven Jones Business Development Lead (EMEA), Video Surveillance Solutions, Seagate explores the new changes to the EDS Range video surveillance solutions Seagate is an international company renowned for its high-quality Hard Disk Drives, however with rapid technological developments which have been enhanced further due to the world pandemic the company aims to move into more emerging markets by being a data solution lead company. It would appear to be a natural step in the right direction.  I have detailed below, on how to overcome the challenges in the surveillance sector due to technology advancements, edge analytics and the increased demand for rapid paced developments. As an Enterprise Data Solutions (EDS) expert I will also lead the panel during our Webinar which is scheduled for May 2021. The launch of the EDS range represents a small but significant change in direction for various markets within video surveillance. As surveillance systems start to scale, there is an obvious requirement for more scalable storage infrastructure for example if the number of cameras in a system grows or an organisation increases the retention period of the data by months or years, the architecture comes under severe strain. With legacy systems, this would create a huge challenge but the technology we use for the EDS portfolio allows the systems to be scaled up to multiple petabyte solutions. EDS is easily scalable, provides a better return on investment, lower total cost of ownership and has a higher feature set. To seal our expertise, we have earned a number of certifications and verifications in recent months to validate our enterprise solutions with several of the leading VMS vendors, like Milestone Systems. This provides us with even more credibility in the market that we are offering a validated solution which has been tested, certified and verified by some of the leading vendors in the industry. The EDS portfolio will be available globally for countries which require multi-petabyte storage solutions. The solution is ideal for sectors such as critical infrastructure, retail smart cities, education and many more. The EDS range is not the only innovation that Seagate is bringing to market at this moment. To meet the demands of data growth and the hunger shown by clients for increased storage capacity, the company has introduced Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR). The technology has received a tremendous response from organisations around the world with thousands of units already having been shipped to large-scale enterprises. Customers want the highest capacity drives at the lowest costs and this is what HAMR delivers. This new technology will be the bedrock of what takes us forward over the next several years and will significantly increase the capacity of the drives we bring to market. HAMR uses a new kind of media magnetic technology on each disk that allows data bits to become smaller and more densely packed than ever, while remaining magnetically and thermally stable. Then, to write new data, a small laser diode attached to each recording head momentarily heats a tiny spot on the disk, which enables the recording head to flip the magnetic polarity of a single bit at a time, enabling data to be written. Each bit is heated and cools down in a nanosecond, so the HAMR laser has no impact at all on drive temperature, or on the temperature, stability, or reliability of the media overall. The effect this is having from a data storage perspective is that it is making the data more complex and it is also increasing the rate that we ingest the data. However, there is no doubt that the Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning analytics within the systems are enabling us to extract significantly more valuable insights from the data that’s being collected You will be seeing a lot more activity from Seagate.   To stay up to date on the latest, trends, innovations, people news and company updates within the global security market please register to receive our newsletter here.
