The Security Institute new scheme operator for SABRE

Building Research Establishment (BRE), the world-leading building science centre, has today announced it will be entering into a partnership with The Security Institute – the UK’s largest professional membership body for security professionals – in relation to its SABRE certification scheme. SABRE is an award-winning security risk management standard for new and existing buildings and infrastructure projects.

As part of the agreement, the Security Institute will lead on the delivery of SABRE Assessor training and Licensing, in addition to administering registration of facilities undergoing SABRE assessment. BRE Global Ltd – part of the BRE Group – will retain the certification responsibility of SABRE and continue to list certified SABRE Assessments on Red Book Live.

The news marks a strategic move by BRE to ensure SABRE is well-placed to develop further and increase its influence in an industry which is rapidly developing.

Dr Shamir Ghumra, Head of Building Performance Services at BRE, commented: “Today’s announcement is a natural next step for us as we ensure SABRE is poised for future growth. The Security Institute is perfectly positioned to support us on these ambitions, and we look forward to seeing SABRE grow and strengthen to help more organisations showcase their commitment to security. This will be paramount as national security becomes increasingly important.”

Peter Lavery FSyl, Chair at The Security Institute, commented: “The Security Institute is delighted to be partnering with BRE to bring the SABRE standard to a wider audience. In doing so we aim to transform the way in which security risk management is applied in the design, construction and operation of our built environment.

Becoming the scheme operator for SABRE supports our wider mission to inspire, inform and influence professional excellence. It also enables us to create new opportunities for professional development for our members and to raise the profile of the discipline in the design and operation of buildings.

There is an ever-changing threat landscape, increasing focus on ESG in the board room, and legislation affecting this important issue on the horizon in the form of the Protect Duty. It has never been more critical that those responsible for managing risk have robust tools at their disposal to help them discharge their legal and social obligations. SABRE, and the industry-recognised third-party certification provided by BRE, will help ensure The Security Institute and its members remain ahead of the curve in addressing these challenges in the years to come.”

SABRE is a world-leading security risk management standard for new and existing buildings, infrastructure assets and managed space. The scheme provides industry with a framework that can be used during the design, construction and operation of assets to achieve better security outcomes and return on investment.

SABRE allows organisations in a variety of sectors – including education, retail, and healthcare – to evidence their commitment to security and communicate their ability to manage security risks, so they can provide valuable assurance to tenants, insurers, investors, regulators, planning authorities and other parties.
