Defensive AI safeguards against cyber threats

Google’s recent announcement of an artificial intelligence (AI) Cyber Defense Initiative to enhance global cybersecurity underscores the importance of defending against increasingly sophisticated and pervasive cyber threats. AI is expected to play a pivotal role in collecting, processing, and neutralising threats, transforming the way organisations combat cyber risks, observes GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company. Looking at AI cyber threat detection technology through the lens of innovation using GlobalData’s Technology Foresights tool reveals some compelling insights. Patent filings have surged from 387 in 2018 to 1,098 in 2023, highlighting a robust growth trajectory in AI-driven security solutions. Furthermore, the entry of 53 new companies in 2023, for a total of 239, showcases the expanding interest and investment in this critical area of technology. Vaibhav Gundre, Project Manager of Disruptive Tech at GlobalData, comments: “The ability of AI to improve threat identification, streamline the management of vulnerabilities, and enhance the efficiency of incident responses is key in addressing the continuous evolution of cyber threats. The rapid progression in the field of defensive AI is underscored by a 13% compound annual growth rate in patent applications over the last three years, reflecting a strong commitment to innovation. This trend is also indicative of the recognised importance of having formidable cyber defense systems in place, signifying substantial research and development activities aimed at overcoming new cyber threats.” An analysis of GlobalData’s Disruptor Intelligence Center highlights the partnership between AIShield and DEKRA as a notable collaboration aimed at enhancing the security of AI models and systems. Through advanced training, assessment, and protection strategies, the partnership seeks to bolster cyber resilience across industries and foster trust in AI technologies. Similarly, Darktrace’s collaboration with Cyware exemplifies a proactive approach to cybersecurity. By facilitating collaboration among security teams and sharing threat intelligence, the partnership enables organizations to mitigate risks and respond effectively to emerging cyber threats. AI cyber threat detection finds application across diverse use cases, including threat detection in security cameras, real-time malware detection, network threat detection, anomaly detection in critical infrastructure, fraud prevention, and AI-powered surveillance systems. Gundre concludes: “As organisations harness the power of AI cyber threat detection, they must also confront significant challenges. The rapid evolution of cyber threats, coupled with the complexity of regulatory landscapes, underscores the need for continuous innovation and collaboration. While patents and partnerships lay the foundation for robust cyber defense strategies, addressing these challenges will require a concerted effort from industry stakeholders. By staying vigilant and embracing a proactive approach, organisations can navigate the evolving cybersecurity landscape with confidence, safeguarding critical assets and preserving digital trust.” Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here. Abloy UK

Abloy UK reinforces importance of access control

Abloy UK has emphasised the significance of adhering to fire door regulations in response to recent government data showing a concerning surge in fire incidents across England. In light of these developments and to commemorate the commencement of Fire Door Safety Week 2023, Abloy is urging for enhanced comprehension of escape system regulations, aiming to elevate industry standards and mitigate the potential for loss of life. Pat Jefferies, Commercial Director at Abloy UK, explains: “Abloy is a huge advocate of fire and emergency escape door compliance and an avid supporter of Fire Door Safety Week. We promote the crucial importance of fire doors in saving lives and protecting property – not just during the initiative but all year round. “When it comes to access control in public buildings, there is no greater responsibility than specifying the correct locking solution on emergency escape and fire doors. As well as having a moral obligation to ensure access control systems adhere to the latest regulations, there is also a legal requirement for those in charge of a public building – whether that’s an employer, building owner, or facilities or building manager.” There are already several building regulation standards in place that relate to access control, and it’s essential that these are adhered to, to ensure safety and security. These include EN179 Emergency Escape (for when the building occupants are aware of the building environment), EN1125 Panic Escape (for environments used by the general public) and EN13637 Electronically Controlled Escape Systems (for use on escape routes). These standards affirm that even if a door is electronically controlled for access there must be a compliant mechanical means of escape in an emergency. When it comes to fire doors, this is essential to provide fire protection, compartmentalise a building and protect the escape routes. This is also a critical function in a terror situation – offering the ability to shut off certain areas to terrorists and allow controlled egress or access to ensure the safety of the public. There was also a recent amendment to BS 7273: Pt4 Code of practice for the operation of fire protection measures – Part 4: Actuation of release mechanisms for doors, to enhance security and provide safer means of controlling the unauthorised use of escape doors. Pat added: “Even with all these regulations in place, there is little awareness of who is responsible for fire safety duties. There needs to be greater education on escape and fire door safety, and how to ensure the solutions specified are safe and compliant. “This is most crucially to guarantee the safety of a building’s occupants, but also to make sure that the building manager is not liable if an accident does occur.” With this in mind, the Abloy Academy provides a range of free courses designed to designed to train installers, security managers, end users and specifiers, giving them the skills and knowledge to ensure maximum safety and security while helping to save lives in an emergency. These include the Foundations and Foundations Plus courses, and new RIBA approved CPDs to help educate on specifying compliant access control solution. Pat concluded: “Compliance must be taken very seriously – the shocking increase in fires in England makes this an even more pertinent issue. With the free courses available at the Abloy Academy, specifiers of access control solutions for emergency escape and fire doors can ensure that systems adhere to the latest regulations. “After all,  it could mean the difference between life and death.” Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here. ASSA ABLOY’s latest industry report analyses how wireless access control is evolving — and how security managers can benefit  Being innovative and staying at the forefront of technology is what helped us to grow from humble beginnings to providing access solutions for organisations moving from the mechanical to the digital world.   Today with operations in over 70 countries, our pioneering approach remains the focus as we continuously develop our Digital Access Solutions. Expert solutions that help billions of people move seamlessly, securely, and safely through buildings with ease, every day. Whatever the size, location, or type of business you run, we can help you digitalise your buildings’ access control, so it is scalable and ready for tomorrow’s world – today.  We help you digitalise and future-proof your buildings with a wide range of access solutions  meeting your individual needs and assisting you also with latest market insights around the digitalisation of access.   The latest report biennial. Connectivity and convenience are key themes in the latest Wireless Access Control Report 2023 edition.  Using data gathered from a new survey of 400 security, facilities management and IT professionals, the 2023 Report identifies trends which will shape this market and customers’ experience over the coming years. The Report was produced by IFSEC Insider and includes expert contributions from analysts Omdia.  “We are delighted once again to offer fresh insights into the ongoing digitalisation of access,” says Richard Sharp, Director, Product Line Management, Digital Access Solutions at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions. “A particular focus of the 2023 Report is access control’s potential impact on the wider business — as an enabler for business intelligence, cost efficiency and of course better sustainability performance.”  “The Report highlights ways for security departments and consultants to contribute directly to business strategy — and indeed, reveals data which makes it clear this process should happen sooner rather than later.”  Convenience, connectivity and decision-making power for security managers  Convenience has triumphed. End-users prize flexible, scalable technologies which are easy to use and to integrate with building systems. In the Report survey, 93% of respondents agreed that compatible, integration-ready standards are important when choosing or recommending access control.   “Security is often assumed these days,” adds Sharp. “The role of access control is now to help the business work smarter, saving time and costs in the process.”  One key technology is the smartphone, of course. Data from the Report highlights fast-growing deployment of mobile credentials in organisations of almost every size and type.  Alongside convenience, the Report makes an urgent business case for connected intelligence — within and across organisational functions — including by combining cyber and physical security under one roof.   For example, only 12% of survey respondents felt fully prepared for forthcoming European cyber-security legislation. “The cyber-security knowledge gap in ‘traditional’ security and facilities management departments is real,” says Sharp. “As the Report also highlights, combination cyber–physical security attacks are on the rise. Now is a good time to upgrade both systems and knowledge.”  The economic climate has encouraged organisations of every size and type to focus on cost and workflow efficiencies. This presents an opportunity for security managers and directors to show how they can contribute to business success — and quickly.   “Data gathered from security systems can be used in many other areas of the business, such as managing the hybrid working patterns of the staff and improving energy efficiency by only heating and/or lighting areas of the building which are occupied,” notes the Report.  “Security can escape its silo,” Sharp adds. “Indeed, it must, if organisations are to thrive.”  Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here. Sophos

Sophos supports hybrid shift

Sophos, who pride themselves on their innovative cybersecurity solutions, has announced the Sophos AP6 Series to support the shift to hybrid environments with a new generation of remotely managed Wi-Fi 6 access points. The new offering adds another feature to Sophos’ secure access portfolio, which includes Sophos Switch and Sophos Firewall. “With cloud-managed Wi-Fi, Sophos is addressing the need for more scalable, remote-managed Wi-Fi solutions that support the increasing number of connected devices and the proliferation of IoT systems,” said Daniel Cole, vice president of product management at Sophos. “This combination of our Sophos AP6 Series and Sophos Switches provides channel partners with a consolidated single vendor access solution strategy, easing the burden and overhead cost of managing multiple disparate systems from different vendors. Many access layer networks are still operating at 1 Gigabit speeds. With the significant performance enhancements in Wi-Fi 6, the industry has a great opportunity to review and modernize the network ecosystem that wireless is deployed into. Sophos’ solution dissolves a common bottleneck at the physical layer and can boost the total network performance of a company’s Wi-Fi infrastructure.” The Sophos AP6 models – which include the 420E, AP6 840, AP6 840E and the outdoor AP6 420X – contain at least one built-in 2.5 Gigabit interface for faster LAN connectivity. When combined with the Sophos multi-Gigabit switches, which also support 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, companies can unlock faster speeds across the entire network. With the AP6 420E and 840E devices, which support Wi-Fi 6E, companies can also use the 6 GHz band, which is a newer, less congested space, that offers high performance for the latest devices. A further advantage is that Sophos access points can be remotely managed in the cloud-based Sophos Central platform alongside a wider range of solutions than any other vendor. This gives partners the ability to oversee all customer installations, respond to alerts, and track licenses and upcoming renewal dates via a single, intuitive interface. Moreover, an on-premises interface gives administrators the advantage of using on-AP settings. Read more exclusives and news in our latest issue here.
