Tony Porter Makes Announcement on Privacy and the Public

The Surveillance Camera Commissioner visits Bristol to make announcement on privacy and the public

The Surveillance Camera Commissioner, Tony Porter is in the Bristol City Centre today and tomorrow (11th November), at a leading security conference where he will launch his CCTV ‘Self-Assessment’ Tool to help businesses and the public comply and understand how public space surveillance CCTV should be managed and operated reflecting individuals’ right to privacy.

Global MSC Security is staging their annual seminar where leading CCTV experts from across the country gather to view new CCTV and other state of the art security technology.

The Surveillance Camera Commissioner has launched an easy to use self-assessment tool for organisations to show how they are complying with the 12 guiding principles in the surveillance camera code of practice.

The tool will help organisations show what they’re already doing to comply with the code as well as what may need to be done in the future. It has been developed over the past few months in close collaboration with the Security Systems & Alarms Inspection Board and National Security Inspectorate as well as other industry specialists. The tool has also been tested thoroughly with CCTV camera operators and managers.
Tony Porter said:

“Today is a landmark moment in my tenure as Surveillance Camera Commissioner. The self assessment tool is easy to use and will really help organisations who use CCTV see where they are meeting the 12 guiding principles or where they may need to do a little more.”

Tony will be amongst other eminent speakers describing how the use of intrusive CCTV in public areas must retain the support of the general public.

Derek Maltby the Managing Director of Global MSC Security said:

“We are conscious of ever developing technology that could be perceived to be intrusive and it is important the public know their interests are being safeguarded by the independent Surveillance Camera Commissioner”.

New 4k camera technologies are also being launched by Bosch with Ultra High Definition views of the Avon Gorge and Clifton Suspension Bridge being transmitted straight to the hotel onto a 4k screen.

The Lord Mayor of Bristol Alastair Watson will also be in attendance.
Other Speakers include:

  • Dr Tim Brain, OBE, QPM, FRSA, Former Chief Constable of Gloucestershire Constabulary – CCTV & The Future of Policing
