Unlicensed Northamptonshire security director fined for illegal working

Security-Industry-Authority-LogoA security director has been fined and sentenced to a community punishment after being found guilty of working illegally following a Security Industry Authority (SIA) investigation.

Ian Mathew Taylor, 40, supplied door staff to venues in the Wellingborough area through Shadow Protection Services.

Taylor, of High Street, Wellingborough, Northampton, pleaded guilty at Wellingborough Magistrates Court of using and working as an unlicensed security operative.

He was ordered to pay £2,400 and sentenced to a 12-month community punishment order, during which he will undertake 250 hours of unpaid work.

The SIA, the organisation responsible for regulating the UK private security industry, gathered examples of evidence, including signing-in sheets, after being given intelligence regarding the workings of Shadow Protection Services in September 2010.

Investigators found Taylor had illegally supplied an unlicensed door supervisor to two Wellingborough venues between December 31 2010 and November 19 2011. Sign-in sheets gathered showed that both Taylor and the door supervisor had been working illegally.

During an interview, Taylor denied working after his licence expired in May 2009 and denied being involved in the running of the business. However, these claims were contradicted by witnesses.

Nathan Salmon, SIA Head of Investigation, said: “Door supervisor licensing exists to protect the public from harm, ensuring that only suitable and vetted individuals undertake this valuable role.

“This prosecution highlights the significance the courts place on only correctly licensed individuals working in the industry. It identifies that those supplying unlicensed operatives present a risk not only to the public, but also to the livelihood of the licensees engaging their services. “

Earlier in March, Dean Campisi, 32, of Port Talbot, and Stephen Bosher, 51, of Neath, were found guilty of falsely claiming security company Secure Serve Facilities Management Services Limited (Secure Serve) was part of the SIA’s Approved Contractor Scheme to maintain a contract with supermarket chain Lidl.
