surveillance

Using surveillance solutions to transform the retail experience

How can using video surveillance help transform the retail experience and improve security, efficiency and reduce criminal activity  The retail industry has been through one of the most challenging periods in its history but is showing some positive signs of recovery. As restrictions have eased and allowed customers to return to shops, retailers have realised that there have been shifts in shoppers’ mentalities.    For example, in June 2021 PwC conducted a Global Consumer Insight Pulse Survey which found that 35% of consumers believed increased health and safety measures such as controlled numbers were important when shopping in physical stores.    “Surveillance technology can be implemented in a multitude of ways to help retailers remain responsive to changing demands” In addition to health concerns, there is a demand for more flexible and convenient options. Consumers increasingly want a shopping experience that is as simple, quick and, above all, as contactless as possible. In order for brick-and-mortar retail to continue to survive, it must respond to the new needs of consumers.   Surveillance technology can be implemented in a multitude of ways to help retailers remain responsive to changing demands, supporting them in both improving the customer experience and store security. Louise Hobroh, Global Enterprise Segment Marketing Manager Retail and Carina Reitz, Solution Marketing Manager Network Audio for Axis Communications discuss exclusively for Security Buyer the benefits of video surveillance in the changing retail landscape.   Monitoring store occupancy   Surveillance solutions equipped with people counting and queue monitoring technology can be used to provide valuable information about activity within the store at any one time. The use of IP audio in these solutions can be used to both reassure shoppers of the safety measures in place and assist in controlling customer occupancy so there are not too many people in the store at the same time.   If the store becomes crowded or a long queue starts to develop, two actions can be taken. When shoppers are wishing to enter the store, voice messages can be used to instruct them that they need to wait due to reaching customer capacity. Meanwhile inside the shop, staff can be alerted to open more tills, reducing the number of people queuing at a single checkout station.  “Surveillance solutions equipped with people counting and queue monitoring technology can be used to provide valuable information” This is also in line with customer wishes: A recent study by Multiscope shows that over a third of the surveyed participants (39%) would like to know how many people are in a shop before they enter it. This is likely another impact of the pandemic on shoppers’ mentalities where-by they feel overcrowded spaces pose more health risks. Audio solutions can also help to disperse crowds and shorten queues through live messages alerting staff to attend the shop floor so that they can intervene.   Deterring criminal activity inside and outside stores  Improving the customer experience is not only about monitoring for customer needs, but also for criminal behaviour.  Stores tend to be hot spots for theft, vandalism or interpersonal conflict and it is critical for security personnel to be aware of incidents. Early intervention is even more valuable, as staff can prevent incidents from escalating. Surveillance solutions with features such as sound detection can support staff in detecting undesirable activity. For example, audio analytics can be used to pick up sounds of aggression from individuals or breaking glass. After the detection of the sounds, alerts can be used in various ways to respond to the situation for example: to notify an alarm centre that can speak live to the scene and instruct security staff to the site; or enable the speaker to play a pre-recorded message that they are under surveillance and that security staff are on their way.  In the self-checkout zone, video helps to prevent shrinkage. Software analyses goods in a customer’s shopping trolley based on the video image and ensures that the products are scanned correctly. By connecting this to audio capabilities, alerts can be triggered to identify non-scanning and fraud and then instruct staff to come over and check the items when necessary. Integrating voice messages into self-checkout zones can discourage criminal activity by informing individuals how to scan correctly.      Losses from shoplifting can be significant – it’s been reported that European retailers lose roughly €49bn a year from shrinkage. Audio solutions can support in deterring theft inside shops by playing announcements and alerts when suspicious behaviour is detected by video cameras. For example, if a visitor lingers in a high value goods area for a long time, a voice message saying that staff will be there to support can be played. Through these actions suspicious behaviour can be addressed, ultimately leading to fewer incidents and a reduction in security personnel needed on site, saving money and time.  Use of video cameras and audio solutions was implemented by RC Willey, a large home furnishings chain in the US. After deploying cameras in stores and warehouse to track inventory and spot discrepancies the stores experienced a reduction in shrinkage. In an effort to increase profits even more, the retailer added audio speakers to the security solution, to play pre-recorded messages to intruders or vandals when they were detected by cameras. As a result of the combined implementation, RC Willey found that theft and vandalism expenses dropped from $40-$50K a year to zero at its Las Vegas distribution centre, even though the location was a hot spot for criminal activity.  Combining these smart technologies for monitoring criminal behaviour can impact not only inside stores, but the surrounding areas outside. If there are people loitering or gathering after opening hours, alerts can be sent to security teams and messages played to encourage groups or individuals to move on. Actions can then be taken to address suspicious behaviour.  In practice, this works well. Le Piazze Center in Bologna needed to upgrade the existing surveillance system to improve efficiencies and better support security staff. By adding network audio to the solution, a passive system was transformed into a proactive instrument which could broadcast either live or

Hanwha

New TID-600R intercom from Hanwha Techwin brings high-quality communication

Hanwha Techwin has announced a new intercom product, the TID-600R, that brings together the company’s high-quality camera functionality with audio features and analytics. The new intercom has multiple applications, from acting as a help point for queries and emergencies, to access control or seamless communication with a control room or a front desk reception. The SIP compliant TID-600R features a 2MP fisheye lens with a wide horizontal 180° field of view (114° vertical), low light performance (IR provides 16 feet/5 metres of infra-red illumination), and Wide Dymanic Range (WDR) for challenging lighting scenes. Additionally, the intercom is NDAA compliant. TID-600R uses The intercom is applicable across many different sectors, notably healthcare settings (where touchless access control is prioritised); car parks and transport settings (to improve visibility and communication); and office locations and residential settings (for a seamless entry and exit experience). The product goes beyond a simple intercom system to offer surveillance features that improve security, integration with leading VMS and NVRs, and can act as part of a wider video surveillance and access control setup. Easy touchless control In addition to the intercom’s push button, the TID-600R offers a touchless call system, allowing individuals to simply raise their hand towards the device to initiate a call. Touchless entry and exit solutions have become increasingly important post-Covid, reducing the risk of infection and cleaning needs. The touchless option can be easily switched on and off via the intercom’s intuitive user interface. Visual features The camera within the intercom can also handover events to other cameras in a security system to boost security and safety – for example during nighttime or when a building is unattended. This feature can be used to move a PTZ camera to point automatically at an entrance if someone is detected in front of it by the intercom camera. Similarly, intelligent analytics such as line crossing, loitering, object classification, and more can add further insights for operators. All camera footage can be stored in a VMS or NVR for easy retrieval and analysis post-event. Along with edge storage available in the device itself through a Micro SD card slot. This makes the TID 600R more flexible and useful than a traditional intercom device as it provides additional entry/exit data and automation. Audio features The intercom’s built-in speaker and microphone provide excellent call clarity with up to 85dB of volume at 0.5m, echo cancellation and noise reduction. Users can program audio messages to automatically play when a call is initiated or someone enters the field of view. Sound classification analytics (detecting glass breakage, screen explosion and gunshots) offers extra situational awareness to operators. SIP 2.0 support The TID-600R offers full SIP 2.0 support making it easy to integrate with existing VoIP systems. When a person interacts with the intercom, multiple phones at any location can be contacted simultaneously through the VoIP system, so the intercom will always be answered. It can also easily integrate with PBX servers. Environmental protection With an attractive metal casing in white or dark grey, the TID-600R is externally robust and utilises tamper and shock detection analytics and alarms to notify operators of any potential tampering. Its IP65 and IK08 classifications, and NEMA 4X enclosures fully protect the device from dust, water, and other potential environmental damage, prolonging the lifetime and quality of the intercom. To fit in with a building’s aesthetics, the intercom comes with an additional range of mounts and other accessories (available to purchase separately). Compatibility and security The TID-600R intercom facilitates an open platform that can support edge-based third-party applications. There is additional API support with the Hanwha SUNAPI SDK and it supports ONVIF Profile S. Additionally it can be used with the Wisenet PoE extender camera range reducing the need for additional network cabling and LAN ports. Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing at Hanwha Techwin Europe, “The TID-600R intercom is the first product of its kind in the Hanwha Techwin portfolio bringing our market-leading camera and video analytics technologies to an intercom product. We’re excited to be able to offer customers a more extended solution that spans across video surveillance, access control and communication, and benefits from Hanwha Techwin’s extensive industry experience.”   Media contact Rebecca Morpeth Spayne, Editor, Security Portfolio Tel: +44 (0) 1622 823 920 Email: editor@securitymiddleeast.com

Biometric access control with DoorBird & Fingerprints

DoorBird integrates a Biometric Fingerprint Sensor in its IP Door Intercoms Bird Home Automation, a Berlin-based manufacturer of “DoorBird” IP access control devices, is expanding its product portfolio to include door intercoms with an integrated fingerprint sensor. IP video door stations of the D21x series are now equipped with fingerprint technology from Fingerprint Cards AB, a global biometrics company based in Sweden. This enables biometric authentication via fingerprint. With a DoorBird door station, homeowners and residents can see and speak to their visitors and delivery services on the go via smartphone and unlock the door when needed. Each door intercom features an HD wide-angle camera, motion sensor and audio system with echo and noise cancellation. Keyless access control via RFID or PIN code is now complemented by a new option: via biometric fingerprint. The full-frame touch sensor is based on patented technology by Fingerprint Cards AB and meets high convenience and security standards compared to line-based sensors. The fingerprint reader is fully integrated into the DoorBird software architecture and can be configured remotely at any time. Via app or web-based dashboard, the user can grant and withdraw access permissions, and also define which event should follow when a certain finger is detected. For example, an internal or external relay can be triggered, or an HTTP(S) command can be carried out. To prevent manipulation attempts, the fingerprint scanner is temporarily locked after ten unauthorised access attempts. The fingerprint sensor is integrated in DoorBird models with one and two call buttons: D2101FV Fingerprint 50 and D2102FV Fingerprint 50. Each door intercom can store up to 50 fingerprints. Furthermore, customers can create their own customised IP video door stations equipped with a fingerprint sensor and other individual modules via the DoorBird 3D Configurator. “Thanks to the cooperation with Fingerprints Cards AB, we can fulfill many of our customers’ requests for high-quality IP access control devices with a fully integrated biometric fingerprint sensor,” said Sascha Keller, CEO of Bird Home Automation. “When it comes to collaborations, we always try to work with the best in their class, and that is why we have integrated this technology, which is characterised by a superior biometric performance and security, into our DoorBird IP video door stations.” “We are excited about our collaboration with DoorBird, our first IP Door Station partner in EMEA, who now launched their D21x series with our fingerprint sensor, a solution that is suitable for smart homes, where biometrics bring convenience and security”, commented Michel Roig, SVP Business Line Payment & Access at Fingerprint Cards AB.   To stay up to date on the latest, trends, innovations, people news and company updates within the global security market please register to receive our newsletter here.
