Cost of an Email-Borne Security Attack

Barracuda Networks published its 2023 Email Security Trends report that shows how email-based security attacks affect organisations around the world. 75% of the organisations surveyed for the report had fallen victim to at least one successful email attack in the last 12 months, with those affected facing average potential costs of more than $1 million for their most expensive attack. 23% said that the cost of email-based attacks has risen dramatically over the last year. The survey, conducted by independent research firm Vanson Bourne and commissioned by Barracuda, questioned IT professionals from frontline to the most senior roles in companies with 100 to 2,500 employees, across a range of industries in the U.S. and EMEA and APAC countries. The fallout from an email security attack can be significant. The most widely reported effects were downtime and business disruption (affecting 44% of those that had been hit), the loss of sensitive, confidential, and business-critical data (43%), and damage to brand reputation (41%). There were notable differences between industries. For example, financial services organisations were particularly affected by the loss of valuable data and money to attackers (cited by 59% and 51% of victims, respectively), while in manufacturing the top impact was the disruption of business operations (53%). For healthcare institutions the recovery costs involved in getting systems up and running again quickly were the most significant (44%). Regardless of size or industry, however, organisations with more than half their employees working remotely faced higher levels of risk and recovery costs. Organisations also feel underprepared to deal with the threat of malware and viruses (34%), advanced email attacks like account takeover (30%) and business email compromise (28%), and even more basic threats like spam (28%). “Email is a trusted and ubiquitous communications channel, and that makes it an attractive target for cybercriminals. We expect email-based attacks to become increasingly sophisticated, leveraging AI and advanced social engineering in their attempts to get the data or access they want and evade security measures,” said Don MacLennan, SVP, Engineering & Product Management, Email Protection, Barracuda. “Email-based attacks can be the initial access point for a wide range of cyberthreats, including ransomware, information stealers, spyware, crypto mining, other malware, and more. It is not surprising that IT teams around the world don’t feel fully prepared to defend against many email-based threats. Growing awareness and understanding of email risks and the robust protection needed to stay safe will be key in keeping organisations and their employees protected in 2023 and beyond.” To read more news and exclusive features see our latest issue here. Barracuda to demonstrate innovations at GITEX 2022

Having unveiled a series of major updates across its security solutions portfolio at its recent virtual worldwide customer conference, Barracuda, a trusted partner and provider of cloud-first security solutions, is now heading to GITEX Global 2022 where it will demonstrate these enhancements for the first time in the region. The product and service innovations that Barracuda will showcase at GITEX are designed to help customers stay protected against the most persistent and evolving cyberattacks, such as ransomware, and support them with complex digital business transformation challenges in the areas of Email Protection, Zero Trust Access, Managed XDR, and Data Protection. “We are excited to once again participate at GITEX Global which will offer us the opportunity to showcase our latest solutions. While these span email, application, and network protection, the common feature they all share is their simplicity and effectiveness. As cyberthreats grow in sophistication, and as IT environments become increasingly complex, it is this message of simplicity that we have found resonates strongly with our customers and prospects. At GITEX, we intend to inform attendees about how our solutions deliver the advanced functionality they need to defend against modern threats, while keeping usability at their core,” said Toni El Inati – RVP Sales, META & CEE, Barracuda Networks. In addition, having made its Cloud-to-Cloud Backup solution available to customers in the United Arab Emirates from Microsoft’s local cloud data centres in the Emirates, Barracuda is now set to build on this success. Coinciding with its presence at GITEX Global, the company will launch its data centre services in South Africa, extending local cloud data protection to its customers in the country. Among the latest product innovations the company will be demonstrating at GITEX Global 2022 are: Zero Trust Access: as part of Barracuda’s SASE platform, Barracuda CloudGen Access now includes web security to protect users no matter where they work. Email Protection: now with Zero Trust Access, Barracuda Email Protection hardens the Microsoft 365 environment by continuously verifying and only allowing the right users to access the right resources. Data Protection: Barracuda Cloud-to-Cloud Backup is transactable in Azure Marketplace. Barracuda’s Data Protection business momentum was boosted by the growth in its Cloud-to-Cloud Backup SaaS product line that protects data stored in Microsoft 365. Barracuda will also leverage its presence at GITEX to engage with and expand its channel ecosystem. “The channel community is currently being challenged to compete largely on price rather than on value. In this competitive landscape, Barracuda presents a unique ability for our partners to land and expand. Given the breadth and quality of our solutions portfolio, I believe there is always a relevant Barracuda solution that can be offered to prospective customers. Once these businesses have experienced the power and simplicity of our solutions, it is easy for our partners to grow these engagements into profitable long-term partnerships,” said El Inati. Top Barracuda executives and members of its sales, pre-sales and technical teams will be present through the five days of the show at the company’s stand – Stand C20, in Hall 1. Barracuda releases ransomware research

After identifying and analysing 106 highly publicised ransomware attacks over the past 12 months, Barracuda researchers have found that the education (15%), municipality (12%), healthcare (12%), infrastructure (8%), and financial (6%) sectors are the five most targeted by adversaries. The analysis reveals that ransomware attacks on educational institutions more than doubled compared to the previous year, while attacks on the healthcare and financial verticals tripled, and infrastructure-related attacks quadrupled. The researchers noted a rise in the number of service providers – companies that provide IT services or other business services – impacted by ransomware during the last year. However, the public data suggests that fewer victims paid the ransom, likely due to better defences, especially in critical infrastructure. Barracuda’s own detections reveal that the volume of ransomware threats spiked at 1.2 million per month between January and June 2022. The company points out that most ransomware attacks don’t make headlines as many victims choose not to disclose when they get hit and the attacks are often sophisticated and extremely hard to handle for small businesses. “As ransomware and other cyberthreats continue to evolve, the need for adequate security solutions has never been greater,” said Fleming Shi, CTO at Barracuda. “Many cybercriminals target small businesses in an attempt to gain access to larger organizations. As a result, it is essential for security providers to create products that are easy to use and implement, regardless of a company’s size. Additionally, sophisticated security technologies should be available as services, so that businesses of all sizes can protect themselves against these ever-changing threats. By making security solutions more accessible and user-friendly, the entire industry can help to better defend against ransomware and other cyberattacks.” For more news and exclusive features, please see our Q2 issue here. Barracuda delivers email threat detection

Barracuda Networks furthered its commitment to deliver email security solutions which are easy to  use with the announcement of three new Email Protection plans which scale to meet customers’ evolving threat protection needs. Barracuda’s comprehensive solutions combine gateway and API-based AI technology to detect and remediate threats and reduce the risk that a malicious attack succeeds by immediately and automatically eliminating the user’s ability to view or launch flagged emails. “The threat landscape has evolved and, coupled with the gap in security professional talent facing most businesses, protecting against these threats is extremely complex. Barracuda Email Protection offers customers complete protection by combining gateway defense, API-based inbox defense, incident response, data protection, and user security awareness capabilities,” said Don MacLennan, SVP, Engineering & Product Management, Email Protection. “Barracuda was the first to bring an “API approach” to impersonation and phishing protection — leveraging AI and machine learning. Today, we continue to lead with our unique combination of gateway and API-based AI technology to detect and remediate email threats in real time for Office 365 customers.” Recent attacks have shown that Office 365 native security alone has gaps and that third-party solutions are required to ensure customers are fully protected. According to Gartner, “Microsoft Defender for Office 365 (MSDO) offers a wide set of email security capabilities, but due to the rise in business email compromises, account takeovers and other sophisticated attacks, many times some malicious emails are actually missed by MSDO, and in fact by any other email gateway solutions. Therefore, organisations should strongly consider integrating third-party solutions to strengthen their email security capabilities. Aside from traditional gateway solutions, security and risk management leaders should evaluate API-based solutions to act as an additional layer of protection.” With Barracuda, customers receive an integrated and validated suite of capabilities to protect their people and business which includes: Threat prevention: Prevent attacks from getting through by combining email-gateway defenses, API-based inbox defense, and web security. Post-delivery detection and response: Identify and limit the impact of any threats that reach users with automated response and user security awareness training. Data protection: Ensure compliance and stay productive during downtime. Back up important Office 365 email and data to recover easily from malware attacks or lost data. Automated workflows: Easily create custom workflows to completely automate incident response. SIEM/SOAR/XDR integrations: Public-facing APIs for integrating with third-party platforms to enable seamless and consistent response to security events. Barracuda Data Inspector: Data classification capabilities to help find sensitive data such as Personal Identifiable Information (PII) and malware. Barracuda named a Visionary in the 2021 Gartner Magic Quadrant

Barracuda, a provider for cloud-enabled security solutions, announced that it has been recognised as a Visionary in the 2021 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Network Firewalls. According to Gartner, “Network firewalls secure traffic bidirectionally across networks. Although these firewalls are primarily deployed at hardware appliances, clients are increasing deploying virtual appliance firewalls, cloud-native firewalls from infrastructure as a service (IaaS providers, and firewall as a service (FWaaS) offerings hosted directly by vendors.” Barracuda CloudGen Firewall protects cloud-connected users, network workloads, and devices wherever they reside. Barracuda CloudGen Firewall offers a comprehensive set of next-generation firewall technologies to ensure real-time network protection against a broad range of network threats, vulnerabilities, and exploits. Barracuda CloudGen WAN is a cloud-native Firewall-as-a Service with tightly integrated next-generation technologies, including application profiling, intrusion prevention, web filtering, advanced threat and malware protection, antispam, and full-fledged network access control. “With the shift to the cloud and rapid adoption of remote work, organisations need protection that goes beyond next-generation firewalls,” said Tim Jefferson, SVP of Engineering for Data Protection, Network and Application Security at Barracuda. “We believe this report recognises our expertise and innovative approach to network security and the variety of ways that we’re supporting our customers on their security journey and meeting their evolving needs.” According to a Barracuda customer case study, “Of all the products we tested only Barracuda CloudGen Firewall provided internet and VPN load balancing across multiple uplinks combined with full next-generation security capabilities on a single appliance,” said Ivar Indekeu, ICT Infrastructure Manager at H.Essers. “Deployment of Barracuda CloudGen Firewall with Secure SD-WAN was easy and straightforward. Zero Touch Deployment worked very well; we can directly ship the firewalls to the remote locations.” Gartner Magic Quadrant for Network Firewalls, 01 November 2021, Rajpreet Kaur, Adam Hills, Jeremy D’Hoinne, Nat SmithGartner and Magic Quadrant are registered trademarks of Gartner and/or its affiliates in the US and internationally and is used herein with permission. Barracuda boosts Total Email Protection with Forensics and Incident Response

Barracuda has announced the introduction of Forensics and Incident Response. Available to Barracuda Total Email Protection customers, the solution automates incident response and provides remediation options, helping organizations address issues faster and more efficiently. Attackers often attempt to bypass traditional email security measures by using social engineering tactics — emails that contain no malicious code, attachments, or links, or accounts — or by trying to reuse credentials stolen in an outside data breach or compromised through another threat vector. When an attack like this does slip through an organization’s defences, administrators need to respond quickly. With Forensics and Incident Response, when users report a targeted attack, administrators can investigate the attack, find all the affected users, remove malicious emails directly from users’ inboxes, and send alerts to users impacted by an incident. In addition, discovery and threat functionality help identify anomalies in a delivered email, giving customers and channel partners proactive ways to detect email threats. “Today when security teams learn about email-borne attacks, for most companies, security incident response is a time-consuming, manual process that can take hours or days to identify and remediate, which can often lead to further spread of an attack,” said Asaf Cidon, VP of Content Security, Barracuda. “Forensics and Incident Response addresses these problems by arming businesses with the tools and information they need to handle incidents in a faster and more proactive way that can take minutes instead of hours or days.” Wilbur-Ellis, a leading global agribusiness company, deployed Forensics and Incident Response to strengthen email security, and their IT team is already seeing the benefits. Before introducing the solution, the IT team at Wilbur-Ellis relied on users to report email attacks that may have slipped past email security. Each day users reported a few attacks, most of which relied on social engineering tactics, and for every one of those attacks, the team had to search through tens of thousands of emails to see if any of their 4,000 other users had gotten the same message. “Barracuda Forensics and Incident Response allow us to find the emails that slip through the filters and remove them as needed,” said Rick Cahoon, Director of Enterprise Security and Support at Wilbur-Ellis. “Knowing who got the bad email in our enterprise is now all in the same tool. When a suspicious email is reported, we can begin to and sometimes completely remediate the environment quickly. We can identify which users received the email, which users clicked on any bad links, and block future emails from the bad account — all in the same interface. Barracuda Forensics is a big win for our IT and security teams.” www.barracuda.com/forensics
