Showsec’s Scotland area manager, Scott Anderson, chaired a speaker panel discussing the importance of effective crowd management at events, 17th May 2012 at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.

Jointly organised by Event Scotland and Edinburgh Institute: Festivals, Events and Tourism at Napier University, the seminar was attended by 95 delegates from across the industry.

The day’s programme aimed to educate event professionals on the major issues and suggested solutions in the management of crowds, examining the strategic issues behind crowd management, and how these can be adapted for events of any size or genre.

It also featured speeches from three key note speakers; Professor Chris Kemp from The International Centre for Crowd Management and Security Studies at Bucks New University, Tom O’Brien,  public safety group leader at City of Edinburgh Council and Bernadette Fitzpatrick, safety officer at Murrayfield Stadium. Questions were then opened to the floor with a wide range of topics covered, from training and development options to effective risk assessments and licensing.

Chairing the panel, Scott drew on Showsec’s 30 years of experience managing crowds at events of all sizes across the UK.

Scott commented: “It is great to be involved with industry seminars that create such an interest. Seminars such as these are an extremely positive education for all in the events industry. The more we disseminate crowd management information among event managers, promoters, academic institutions, venues; emergency services etc the more chance we have of making our modern day events safer. I would welcome the opportunity to be involved with further events such as this and hope to bring the benefit of Showsec’s 30 years experience in crowd management.”

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer of EventScotland, said: “Thinking about and planning for crowd management is crucial when it comes to staging any event. This seminar provided invaluable information with Scott and the panel sharing their vast experience and knowledge.”
