The London Hilton on Park Lane was the setting for Alfie Moore, a serving policeman and popular stand-up comedian, to present awards at the BSIA’s Annual Luncheon in a ceremony to celebrate the very best that the security industry has to offer and say a big thank you from the BSIA to individuals and groups who have gone over and above in their jobs. He reminded the audience of how politically correct he had been instructed to be before leading everyone through an amusing insight to security from a policing perspective.
The Annual Security Personnel Awards being presented are now in their seventeenth year. They acknowledge the commendable and limitless contributions that security personnel make to the industry and the wider community. The awards recognise exceptional performances within the industry across five different categories: Best Team, Outstanding Act, Service to the Customer, Best Newcomer and Best use of Technology.

Five individuals and teams have been presented with prestigious British Security Industry Association Chairman’s Awards to celebrate outstanding contributions they have made to the ongoing success of the UK’s private security industry.
The BSIA’s Chairman, Pauline Norstrom, Chief Operating Officer at Dedicated Micros and AD GROUP personally selected these.
The categories and winners were: Contribution to Standards was presented to Kevin Harris of Thorn Security, part of the Tyco Group. Contribution to the Community was presented to the Tour of Securitas Team of Securitas Security Services (UK) Ltd. As part of this charitable initiative, over 800 security officers and support staff cycled 2,677 miles to raise awareness of safety in the workplace. Contribution to the Industry was awarded to David Ottewill, Managing Director of Camberford Law PLC, specialist insurance brokers to the security industry. Contribution to Training was presented to security guarding company, VSG, for its Zero Assaults Project. Contribution to Exporting was presented to Ron Archibald, Head of Trade Challenge Partners at UK Trade & Investment (UKTI).
Commenting on the awards, Norstrom said: “I am delighted to be able to recognise the significant contributions made by these five outstanding individuals and organisations, whose commitment and dedication have made a lasting impression on the UK’s private security industry. Whether organising charitable events or raising standards in the field of training, the actions of these winners have all served to promote our industry in a positive light, and I am pleased to be able to commend the impact they have made.”
The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) today presented young apprentices Robbie Jackson and Christopher Hunt with prestigious Apprentice Installer Awards. The apprentices were selected as award winners in recognition of their academic and practical success in the field of electronic security installations.
Andrew Turner, who manages Robbie at Compass Fire and Security, comments: “I firmly believe in the apprenticeship scheme and that apprentices are an asset to any organisation. [One] of Robbie’s positive attributes is his ability to learn or understand a new or unfamiliar piece of equipment very quickly… Over the years, Robbie has progressed extremely well.”
Achieving National Winner status is first-year apprentice, 17-year-old Christopher Hunt, who works for King’s Security. Nominating Christopher for his award was Andrew Wood, Install Supervisor at King’s Security. He comments: “Chris has become a really valued member of the team and is everyone’s choice as a ‘second man’. He understands the importance of the customer and always presents himself and the business in a good light. He is learning other parts of the business fast and is eager to progress.
The other awards said thank you to outstanding individuals and team with Mohammed Amal El-Hajji from Mitie, Donald Murray from VSG, and Richard Farley of the Westgrove Group all being awarded for their Service to their customer. The Aberafan Shopping Centre Team and Chris Fielding from Securitas saving lives and Clarence Hyman, Paul Wilson and Robert Love showing how newcomers to the industry have contributed above and beyone what is expected.
The best use of technology saw Martin Breza from VSG being commended and the Central Shopping Centre team and ITV Security Team picking up the team awards.
The warmth of the thank you to all of the award winners was obvious from the reception they received from the floor. Yet again the BSIA showed how the contribution they make to the development of the Security Industry is invaluable.
