For 40 years, security at the Fénelon Sainte-Marie schools group operated on a mechanical master-key system. During that time, keys changed hands between teaching and admin staff, as well as pupils, multiple times. But old-fashioned security is not enough. Staff and students require flexible, modern access control; visitors expect it. And of course, the reputational consequences of a failure to protect people or their confidential data can be severe.

Now mechanical keys are no longer: Fénelon Sainte-Marie upgraded to Aperio®. Together with the ISOVIEW access control system from ARD, around 500 Aperio® battery-powered locks have been installed wirelessly at the group’s seven sites. Aperio® wireless locks accommodated multiple door configurations, including building entrances, administrative offices and classrooms. “This solution has the enormous advantage of adapting itself to approximately 90 percent of all configurations,” says Carlos Trinidad, technical manager at Fénelon Sainte-Marie.

Students and staff now open doors with smart cards employing MIFARE technology. Aperio® has also made life at Fénelon Sainte-Marie more convenient. Staff and pupils can use the same MIFARE smart card to control lift access, order digital printouts or book a computer, for example.

Security was upgraded to protect staff and student confidentiality, as well as to raise the bar when it comes to physical protection of school sites. It was required to provide round-the-clock access control, to allow the group’s premises to host events outside of school hours. The brief has been met, thanks to Aperio®.

“Aperio® offers multiple solutions for authorizing, monitoring and tracking access, including solutions we tailor-make for the education sector,” says David Geiswiller, access control sales manager at ASSA ABLOY.

Available on the global market place, ASSA ABLOY’s Aperio® Technology enables a wide range of access control providers to cost-effectively integrate non-wired doors with mechanical locks into access control systems.

The famous Fénelon Sainte-Marie group runs 7 schools, at primary, secondary and high-school level. The premises are all located on a single Paris street.
