BSIA information destruction charity event set for success

With just over a week to go until this year’s Information Destruction networking charity event, industry stakeholders are being encouraged to book their place for what is set to be a highly informative and entertaining occasion.

Taking place on Thursday 4th December at the Hilton Garden Inn, Birmingham, this annual event aims to provide a dedicated forum for information destruction professionals to share best practice and learn about recent developments in legislation, standards and technology.

This year’s event looks set for success, promising an informative and varied programme, including presentations covering topics such as:

• The short to medium-term industry outlook from the Information Commissioner’s Office.
• Technological innovation within the industry (Global Recycling & Vecoplan).
• Useful advice on tax, accounting and outsourcing (Cobia).
• Insurance within the sector (Waste Insure).

Commenting on his presentation, Steve Eckersley, Head of Enforcement and Senior Investigating Officer at the Information Commissioner’s Office, asserted that his presentation will, “…outline the current threats and trends, enforcement powers and investigation tools and the recent outcomes of data loss incidents investigated.”

As well as formal presentations, there will be a question and answer session to facilitate an engaging dialogue. Panellists set to take part include: Anthony Pearlgood of PHS Datashred, Mark Coombes of Shred-on-Sit, Mike Annett of C&M Waste Management and Christopher Perry of Perry’s Recycling.

Key discussion points include:

• The European Standard, ‘Secure destruction of confidential material’ (EN15713); does it need to be updated?
• Market development within the sector; the trend toward Information Destruction services being ‘bolted on’ to other services such as records management.
• Growth within the UK shredding market; the different factors that may affect it.
• What factors do end-users take into consideration when procuring information destruction services?

Following the question and answer session there will be an informal drinks reception, dinner and evening entertainment. Olympic athlete and former javelin world record holder, Steve Backley will also be giving an interesting presentation translating his training and experience in the world of sport into the business arena in a witty, insightful and motivational way.

Evening entertainment will culminate with an auction of donated prizes in aid of the charity Together for Short Lives, a leading UK charity for children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions. With costs remarkably low considering what is on offer on the day, we will be asking all companies attending to donate a prize suitable for the raffle or auction.

Adam Chandler, Chairman of the BSIA’s Information Destruction Section, comments: “As well as the sheer entertainment value, this is also a fantastic networking opportunity and the only UK event of its kind designed specifically for the information destruction sector. All industry practitioners are welcome, and I would encourage all information destruction companies to come along to share best practice, while celebrating the capability and professionalism within our sector.”

The BSIA would also like to thank this year’s headline sponsors, Global Recycling, Vecoplan, Cobia and Waste Insure.
