Public Safety in Edinburgh

The City of Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and the second most populous city in the country. It is the seat of the Scottish Government and the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. As well as serving a vital role in government, the city is economically significant for the region, attracting global tourism as well as being home to a world-renowned university. Protecting citizens and visitors as they move through the city and keeping Edinburgh’s roads running smoothly is of the utmost importance. Transforming into a smart city The City of Edinburgh Council leadership needed to modernise security and surveillance across the capital. This involved upgrading the control centre to a new smart city operations centre to receive real-time data from Edinburgh’s surveillance network. The centre also integrates with traffic and transport platforms to enhance operational management and improve city planning. The new control centre gives operators access to real-time data and analytics, for insights that improve response times and situational awareness. Smart technology solutions provider, North, designed a security solution built with more than 100 high-resolution Hanwha Vision IP cameras including the PNM-9322VQP multi-directional PTZ camera and XNO-8080R 5MP IR bullet camera. The solution also incorporates a video management system from Genetec. Comprehensive coverage and intelligence Multi-directional cameras are ideal for monitoring large and complex areas such as city centres. The multi-directional PNM-9322VQP features five camera sensors in a single device, minimising the amount of cabling and server infrastructure required compared to installing five separate devices, to improve cost-efficiency while streamlining installation. The XNO-8080R is a 5MP IR bullet camera with accurate video analytics. These analytics – carried out on the device to reduce server needs – include loitering, directional detection, audio detection and sound classification. It features Hallway View to cover narrow areas such as alleyways. Additionally, using the proprietary compression technology WiseStream II improves bandwidth by up to 75% while retaining video quality. Best-in-class cybersecurity Cybersecurity is crucial in a smart city, given the number of connected devices that could be exploited. Hanwha Vision has been hardening its cybersecurity measures for many years with the National Defense Authorization Act compliance (NDAA), UL CAP Certification, and a dedicated security vulnerability response team (S-CERT). Furthermore, North is part of Genetec’s “network of trust” initiative, signalling the close partnership between the two solution providers and their shared focus on securing network and critical surveillance infrastructure. Leading the way “The new operations centre has been years in the making and it’s fantastic to see it live in action,” said Councillor Jane Meagher, Council Leader, The City of Edinburgh Council. “With cutting-edge low-carbon technology designed to keep the city moving and our communities safe, it drastically steps up our capabilities as a council. Edinburgh is fast becoming an example of a truly smart city and it’s thanks to trailblazing projects like this.” Andrew Foster, MD – Public Services at North, added: “Helping to drive positive change through smart technology and improved operational systems across Edinburgh is something that North is incredibly proud of. Working together, the city now has access to real-time data that will influence the future of city planning, improve large-scale events and create a greener environment for generations to come.” The new video surveillance system provides Edinburgh with a future-proofed smart city solution with the option to expand and add connected devices such as air quality sensors, smart parking applications and flood sensors. What can Security do to encourage more female representation?

Jamie Thompson, Vice President, Engineering at Brivo offers her comments on the progression of women in the security industry. Jamie joined Brivo in 2021 as Director of engineering and now holds the position of Vice President of Engineering. What could the industry do to encourage more female representation? The industry should focus on three key areas to encourage more female representation: (a) Reducing barriers to entry that women typically face (b) Promoting women to managerial roles, especially senior leadership positions (c) Ensuring equal pay A lack of representation is often due to a lack of opportunity. The opportunity gap begins early – girls are less likely than boys to pursue STEM education. I was fortunate to attend a high school with a rigorous STEM curriculum, which played a critical role in shaping my career path. The physical security industry can help close this gap by investing in mentorship programs, sponsorship opportunities, and even grant initiatives to support STEM education for young women. Another barrier to entry is motherhood. Many women either have children or plan to, and a company’s stance on work-life balance can significantly impact a candidate’s decision. If given the choice, a mother–or future mother – will choose a company that prioritizes flexibility and family-friendly policies. Companies in the industry should reassess their benefits, including parental leave, childcare support, and fertility insurance coverage, to demonstrate that they not only value women but also support them in every stage of life. More representation starts with higher visibility. Typically, the most visible roles at companies are at the executive level, yet many of these positions remain male-dominated. Companies must implement inclusive hiring practices, be intentional about promoting women to senior leadership, create clear paths for women to advance, and foster a culture where women feel supported. Finally, pay equity is essential. Companies should conduct regular salary audits to ensure there are no disparities between male and female employees in similar roles. Pay transparency policies can also help address wage gaps by giving employees clear insight into compensation structures and career progression opportunities. Equal pay isn’t just about fairness—it’s about demonstrating that women’s contributions are valued at the same level as their male counterparts. Do you have any advice for women wanting to start a career in this industry? Do not let imposter syndrome hinder your professional development. Despite what others may say, you don’t need to have a background in security to be successful in this industry—the greatest ideas often come from people with fresh perspectives and diverse experiences. Know your strengths well and lean into your weaknesses. Be curious about what you don’t know or understand. Mistakes will happen. It’s not about the mistake you made but about how you recover from that mistake. Focus on resilience and not perfection. Most importantly, surround yourself with people who will advocate for you. If you find yourself in an environment that doesn’t support your growth, then don’t be afraid to push back or seek out a company that does value you. I feel incredibly fortunate to be at Brivo – a place that continually demonstrates how much they value my contribution and will support my career growth. Axis Communications introduces free text search in AXIS Camera Station Pro

Axis Communications, a manufacturer of network security and surveillance solutions, has introduced free text search in AXIS Camera Station Pro, a powerful video forensic tool that allows users to search using their own words. This enhances flexibility and accelerates investigations when searching for moving objects in large amounts of recorded video. The Smart search 2 toolbox will now include both pre-classified objects and free text search capabilities. Free text search gives users greater flexibility and allows them to customize queries to meet segment-specific needs with fewer limitations. They can describe moving objects in greater detail using natural language and associations, enabling more relevant results. Typically, video scrubbing is the quickest way to find objects and incidents. However, if that doesn’t work, free text search offers a powerful AI-based alternative. Free text search is based on an open-source foundation model, trained on billions of image-text pairs and fine-tuned by Axis for surveillance use cases to improve performance. With associations, users can broaden the search scope. For instance, it’s possible to search for people wearing professional uniforms such as construction workers. The model will then find objects matching these typical characteristics. Additionally, it’s possible to find objects with a certain brand or logo. For quicker results, free text search can be combined with filters, such as date and time, object in area, direction, size, and duration. Key Features: Freely use descriptions in English for searching Fine-tuned by Axis for surveillance use cases On-premises video processing Search for brand descriptions Combine with filters for greater accuracy Tools for responsible prompting to avoid misuse With free text search, video data is only processed on the local server, enabling easier regulatory compliance.
